Question #8
Read the following passage and answer the questions. As soon as children are born they begin to be socialised into gender identities. Boys and girls are treated very differently: they are dressed in different colours and styles; they are given different types of toys and to some extent they are treated differently by their parents. They learn how to act and behave as boys and girls. This process continues throughout their childhood and adulthood. Identify and explain two ways in which schools pass on gender identities.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two ways, each identified and explained, e.g. (1) Hidden curriculum/different treatment by teachers passes on messages about how boys and girls should behave, act and dress, e.g. boys allowed to be boisterous and rowdier while girls are expected to be ladylike. (2) Subject portrayal/textbooks: textbooks and reading schemes contain stereotypes of males and females in different roles, and subjects like languages or textiles are seen as for girls while science and engineering are seen as for boys.
Explanation
2 marks for each way, up to 4. For each way, one mark for identifying an accurate way schools pass on gender identities (e.g. more female role models, different treatment by teachers, how subjects are portrayed, stereotypes in textbooks, boys dominating school areas). One further mark for a developed explanation or example of how this affects gender identities (e.g. hidden curriculum messages, stereotyped textbooks, gendered subject choices, boisterous boys versus ladylike girls). If more than two ways are given, the two highest-scoring count. Irrelevant answers get 0.

Question #9
Read the following passage and answer the questions. All societies have ways of making sure that people keep to the laws, norms and values of that society. One of the ways is by the agents of socialisation teaching children the norms and values. This would include the use of sanctions. People who keep to the rules will be rewarded, while those who break them will be punished. Explain why societies have sanctions.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Societies have sanctions to make sure people follow the norms, values and rules of society. Without sanctions people might not conform and society might break down into chaos.
Explanation
One mark for a basic explanation: sanctions make sure people follow the rules/norms and values. One further mark for development, e.g. without sanctions people may not follow norms and values; society might break down or be chaotic; every agent of socialisation/social control uses sanctions; sanctions are mechanisms of social control; credit appropriate examples. Irrelevant answers get 0.

Question #10
Read the following passage and answer the questions. All societies have ways of making sure that people keep to the laws, norms and values of that society. One of the ways is by the agents of socialisation teaching children the norms and values. This would include the use of sanctions. People who keep to the rules will be rewarded, while those who break them will be punished. Explain, using examples, two ways the family teaches children the culture of their society.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two ways, each with an example, e.g. (1) Role models: children copy parents, e.g. seeing father as main earner and mother doing most housework and childcare. (2) Sanctions: parents reward children for keeping rules or punish them for breaking them, e.g. treats/outings or removing mobile phones. (Also: instruction, e.g. teaching children to write their name or tie laces.)
Explanation
2 marks for each way, up to 4. One mark for a basic explanation of an accurate way the family teaches culture (role models to copy; sanctions to make children keep to norms and values; instruction and demonstration of how to behave). Two marks if explained with an example. If more than two ways are given, the two highest-scoring count. Irrelevant answers get 0.
