How Red Hat's certification programme works after the 2026 overhaul — five tracks, five tiers, RHCSA to RHCA, exam formats, costs and renewal rules.

On 11 May 2026, Red Hat quietly rewrote the map that most Linux careers have followed for two decades. The certification programme that used to be a loose ladder — Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), then Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), then Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) with any five specialist exams bolted on — became a grid: five distinct tracks, each with five tiers, and new rules about which exams count towards what. This guide explains the whole programme as it stands: every credential family, how the tiers relate, what the exams are actually like, what they cost, and how renewal works. How the programme is organised: five tracks, five tiers

Red Hat certifications now sit in a matrix. The tracks are technology areas; the tiers are levels of depth within a track.

The five tracks announced in the May 2026 restructure are:

  1. Enterprise Linux — Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) system administration
  2. Ansible — automation with Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform
  3. OpenShift — Red Hat's Kubernetes-based container platform
  4. Cloud-native Applications — building and running applications on that stack
  5. AI — Red Hat's AI platform technologies

Within each track, the tiers run:

  1. Technologist — a new, optional entry level (Red Hat has announced the tier, but specific exams, codes and prices were still emerging at the time of writing — check Red Hat's catalogue for what is bookable)
  2. System Administrator / Developer — the working-practitioner level; RHCSA sits here in the Enterprise Linux track
  3. Engineer — deeper, more design-and-automation-oriented skills
  4. Specialist — elective exams validating deep proficiency in one product area
  5. Architect — RHCA, the top of each track

Two consequences of this structure matter immediately. First, credential names now carry track suffixes — an architect-level credential reads "RHCA – Enterprise Linux" rather than a single generic RHCA. Second, progression happens within a track: the new RHCA requires one Administrator/Developer-tier exam, one Engineer-tier exam and three Specialist electives all from the same track. Mixing exams across tracks no longer builds a valid new RHCA.

If you already hold Red Hat credentials, nothing is revoked: existing certifications remain valid through their normal three-year window, and titles update automatically in Red Hat's verification system.

What makes a Red Hat exam different from other IT exams

Every Red Hat certification exam is performance-based. You sit at a live system — or several — and complete real administrative tasks: configure the storage, write the playbook, fix the service. There are no multiple-choice questions anywhere in the programme. Your work is graded on outcomes: did the system end up in the required state?

This is Red Hat's defining difference from the other Linux certification bodies. Linux Professional Institute (LPI) exams are entirely written; CompTIA Linux+ is mostly multiple-choice with some performance-based questions; only the Linux Foundation's LFCS shares the fully hands-on model. Practically, performance-based testing changes how you prepare. You cannot pass by recognising correct answers; you have to produce them at a terminal, under time pressure, with no internet access. (On the RHCSA exam you can use the product documentation installed in the exam environment; the Ansible-based EX294 prohibits bringing any documentation at all.) The core credentials, one by one

Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)

The RHCSA is the foundation of the entire programme and the Administrator-tier credential of the Enterprise Linux track. You earn it by passing EX200, a hands-on exam that, as of August 2026, Red Hat states is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (earlier deliveries used RHEL 9).

  • Format: 100% practical tasks on live systems; no multiple choice; no internet, but in-system product docs are available.
  • Cost: widely reported at $500 US list price per attempt as of 2026; it varies by country and taxes apply, so confirm the price for your region on Red Hat's site.
  • Passing score: widely reported as 210 out of 300 (70%) by third-party prep sources — Red Hat does not publish it prominently.
  • Prerequisites: none enforced. Red Hat recommends its RH124 and RH134 courses (or the RH199 Rapid Track) or equivalent experience.
  • Validity: current for three years.

The RHCSA is where almost everyone starts, because it is also the prerequisite for the Engineer tier. RHCE and the EX294 exam — mind the 2026 renaming

Here is where newcomers get confused, twice over.

First confusion: the RHCE-level exam is about Ansible, not general Linux. Since 2019, the exam at this tier has been EX294, in which you write Ansible Automation Platform playbooks to perform real-world tasks across multiple systems; your playbooks are graded by running them against freshly installed systems. General sysadmin skills are RHCSA territory. Anyone telling you "RHCE tests advanced Linux administration" is describing the pre-2019 exam.

Second confusion: the title itself changed in 2026. Red Hat's own pages now title EX294 "Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible", placing it in the Ansible track of the new framework, and state that passing it counts towards earning Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible and Red Hat Certified Architect in Ansible. Historically — from 2019 until the 2026 restructure — passing EX294 conferred the RHCE title directly, and Red Hat's RHCE certification page still exists alongside the new naming. The safest way to think about it: EX294 is the exam historically known as the RHCE exam, now retitled and slotted into the Ansible track.

Red Hat Certified Specialist certifications

Specialists are the elective tier: single performance-based exams that each validate deep proficiency in one product area — Ansible network automation, OpenShift administration, containers and Kubernetes, security, Ceph storage, virtualization and more. Under the 2026 rules, three Specialist exams within a track are one of the requirements for that track's RHCA.

One renewal quirk is worth flagging here: Red Hat states Specialist credentials can only be kept current by retaking and passing their respective exams — unlike RHCSA, no higher credential refreshes them. Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA)

RHCA is the summit — and the credential the 2026 restructure changed most.

  • New rule (from 11 May 2026): RHCA is the top tier of each of the five tracks. Earning a new RHCA requires one Administrator/Developer-tier exam, one Engineer-tier exam and three Specialist electives, all within a single track — for example, "RHCA – Enterprise Linux". Cross-track mixing is no longer valid for new RHCA attempts.
  • Old rule (pre-May 2026): RHCE (or the certified developer credential RHCJD) plus any five Red Hat specialist certifications, drawn from anywhere in the catalogue.
  • Existing holders: keep their credential through its normal three-year window. Maintaining RHCA requires keeping five eligible credentials beyond the RHCE/RHCJD current, and those credentials can be rotated over time.

The practical upshot for planners: if you are starting today, pick your track first, because every exam you sit should serve that track's RHCA requirements. Under the old rules you could wander; under the new ones, wandering costs you exams that no longer count together.

Two habits will save you money and irritation. First, sequence exams so renewals cascade: passing EX294 while your RHCSA is still current resets the RHCSA clock too. Which certification should you start with?

For almost everyone, the honest answer is the RHCSA, because the programme's own structure funnels you there: it is the Administrator-tier credential of the flagship track and the prerequisite for the Engineer tier. But your situation shapes the path after it:

Preparing for performance-based exams

Because Red Hat grades outcomes on live systems, preparation is lab work, not reading. Red Hat's recommended courses (RH124/RH134 for RHCSA; RH294 for the Ansible exam) map directly to objectives, and every hour you spend actually breaking and fixing a RHEL system counts double against an exam with no answer options to lean on.

Common planning mistakes under the new rules

Watching how candidates navigated the first months of the restructured programme, a few avoidable errors recur:

Planning from pre-2026 articles. The single most damaging mistake. Guides written before May 2026 describe an RHCA built from any five specialist exams, a generic RHCA title, and no Technologist tier. Booking EX294 for the wrong reasons. Some candidates book the Engineer-tier exam expecting an advanced general-Linux test, discover mid-preparation that it is entirely Ansible, and either grind through material irrelevant to their role or forfeit momentum. Read the exam's objectives page before you book, not after.

Letting the RHCSA lapse before the next exam. Because the Engineer-tier credential requires a current RHCSA, and because a higher pass extends lower credentials, the cheapest sequence keeps every clock running. Sitting EX294 in year four instead of year three can mean paying for an EX200 retake you could have avoided.

Ignoring the Specialist retake rule. RHCSA and Engineer-tier credentials refresh when you climb; Specialist credentials only refresh when you retake them. Candidates who front-load three Specialists into a single year inherit three simultaneous renewal bills three years later.

Treating the RHEL version as trivia. The EX200 exam is based on RHEL 10 as of August 2026. If your daily systems — and therefore your lab — run an older release, some tooling and defaults will differ from what the exam machines present. Do Red Hat certifications expire?

Not in Red Hat's language — they become "non-current" after three years. A non-current credential still appears in your history, but employers and the RHCA rules treat currency as the meaningful state. You renew by retaking the exam or earning eligible higher credentials in the track.
