Linux Certifications Explained

A clear map of the Linux certification landscape — Red Hat, LPI, CompTIA and the Linux Foundation — with formats, costs, validity and how the ladders fit together.

Four organisations issue the Linux certifications that matter: Red Hat, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), CompTIA and the Linux Foundation. Each takes a genuinely different approach — Red Hat and the Linux Foundation make you perform real tasks on live systems, while LPI and (mostly) CompTIA test knowledge through written questions. Which body you certify with shapes what you study, how you are examined, what you pay and how long the credential stays current.

That last point matters more in 2026 than it has for years. Red Hat rebuilt its entire certification programme in May 2026, CompTIA replaced Linux+ with a new exam version in 2025, and the Linux Foundation retired one credential and shortened the validity of another. Plenty of older comparison articles are now simply wrong. The four Linux certification bodies at a glance

Before looking at individual credentials, it helps to understand the philosophy of each issuer, because it determines everything downstream.

  • Red Hat certifies skill on its own commercial distribution, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Every Red Hat exam is performance-based: you sit at a live system and complete tasks, with no multiple-choice questions at all. Credentials are current for 3 years.
  • Linux Professional Institute (LPI) is a vendor-neutral non-profit. Its LPIC ladder (LPIC-1, LPIC-2, LPIC-3) uses written exams — multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank — and certifications remain valid for 5 years.
  • CompTIA offers a single vendor-neutral Linux credential, CompTIA Linux+, delivered as a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions. It renews through CompTIA's Continuing Education (CE) programme on a 3-year cycle.
  • The Linux Foundation, the non-profit that hosts the Linux kernel project itself, offers the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) — a performance-based, distribution-independent exam whose certification is valid for 2 years.

Red Hat: the vendor track, rebuilt in 2026

Red Hat's certifications carry weight because RHEL dominates paid enterprise Linux, and because the exams are notoriously practical. There is no way to memorise your way through one: you either complete the tasks on the machine or you do not.

The May 2026 restructure

On 11 May 2026, Red Hat announced the biggest overhaul of its programme in years. Certifications now sit in five tracks — Enterprise Linux, Ansible, OpenShift, Cloud-native Applications and AI — and five tiers: Technologist (a new, optional entry level), System Administrator/Developer, Engineer, Specialist (electives) and Architect. Credential names gain track suffixes, such as "RHCA – Enterprise Linux". Existing credentials stay valid through their normal 3-year window, and titles update automatically in Red Hat's verification system. Specific exams for the new Technologist tier had not been detailed at the time of writing, so check Red Hat's announcement for the latest.

RHCSA (EX200)

The Red Hat Certified System Administrator is the Administrator-tier credential of the Enterprise Linux track and the foundation of everything above it. The EX200 exam is, per Red Hat's page, based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 as of August 2026 (it moved up from RHEL 9). It is entirely performance-based, with no internet access, though product documentation is available inside the exam environment. There are no enforced prerequisites; Red Hat recommends its RH124 and RH134 courses (or the RH199 Rapid Track) or equivalent experience. The passing score is widely reported as 210 out of 300, though Red Hat does not publish it prominently. RHCE and the EX294 retitling

Here is where 2026 gets confusing. The exam EX294 — historically the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) exam — is now titled by Red Hat's own pages "Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible", sitting in the Ansible track, and passing it counts towards Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible and Red Hat Certified Architect in Ansible. Whatever the label, the substance is unchanged: since 2019 this exam has been about Ansible automation, not general Linux administration. Candidates write Ansible Automation Platform playbooks to perform real-world tasks across multiple systems, and the playbooks are graded by running them against freshly installed machines. No internet access and no documentation of any kind is permitted. You can sit EX294 without RHCSA, but the Engineer-tier credential requires a current RHCSA. A persistent misconception worth killing: "the RHCE tests general Linux skills." It has not since 2019. General administration is RHCSA territory; RHCE-level is automation.

Specialists and RHCA

Above the Engineer tier, Red Hat Certified Specialist exams validate deep proficiency in one product area — security, OpenShift storage, advanced Ansible practices and more — and three Specialist electives within a single track are now part of the path to Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA). Under the new rules, an RHCA requires one Administrator/Developer-tier exam, one Engineer-tier exam and three Specialist electives, all inside one track; the old formula (RHCE plus any five specialists, mixed freely) no longer applies to new attempts. Validity: "non-current", not expired

Red Hat certifications are current for 3 years. Red Hat's careful wording is that they "do not expire" but become "non-current". You renew by retaking the exam or by earning a higher credential in the track — passing EX294, for instance, pushes your RHCSA's non-current date out three years from the new pass.

LPI: the vendor-neutral ladder

The Linux Professional Institute is the oldest dedicated Linux certification body, and its LPIC ladder is deliberately distribution-agnostic — the objectives cover concepts and commands that apply across Debian, Red Hat-family and other systems.

Linux Essentials

Below the professional ladder sits Linux Essentials (exam 010-160), an entry-level certificate that is cheaper than the LPIC exams and, unusually, has lifetime validity. It is a genuine on-ramp for people with no Linux background rather than a professional credential.

LPIC-1

LPIC-1 (version 5.0 as of August 2026) requires two written exams, 101-500 and 102-500. Each is 60 questions — multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank — in 90 minutes, with a passing score of 500 on LPI's 200–800 scale. In Tier 1 markets (US, UK, EU, Australia) each exam costs $200, roughly $400 for the full certification; LPI uses regional pricing, so it is meaningfully cheaper in some countries. No prerequisites, valid 5 years. The two-exam structure is LPIC-1's defining trade-off: more total testing than any single-exam rival, but the longest validity in the field.

LPIC-2 and LPIC-3

LPIC-2 requires an active LPIC-1 and two further exams (201-450 and 202-450, version 4.5 — confirm current codes on lpi.org), on the same format and Tier 1 pricing. LPIC-3, the enterprise tier, works differently: it is four separate specialty certifications — 300 Mixed Environments, 303 Security, 305 Virtualization and Containerization, 306 High Availability and Storage Clusters — and passing any one exam (with an active LPIC-2) earns that specialty. Each LPIC tier is valid for 5 years.

CompTIA Linux+: one exam, hybrid format

CompTIA Linux+ is CompTIA's single Linux credential, aimed at the same broad sysadmin skill set as LPIC-1 but packaged as one exam. The current version is XK0-006 ("V8"), launched 15 July 2025; the predecessor XK0-005 has been retired, so ignore any study material still targeting it. The exam runs to a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixing multiple-choice with performance-based questions, and the passing score is 720 on CompTIA's 100–900 scale. There are no required prerequisites, though CompTIA recommends about 12 months of Linux administration experience. CompTIA's own page does not print a list price; third-party resellers list roughly $338–$369 as of 2026, so confirm the official figure at checkout.

Linux+ renews under CompTIA's Continuing Education programme: 3-year cycles, 50 CEUs to renew Linux+ on its own, with CE fees of $50 per year. If you already hold other CompTIA certifications, that CE machinery is familiar and can be a point in Linux+'s favour; if you hold none, it is an ongoing cost the other bodies do not impose in the same way. The Linux Foundation: LFCS and a shrinking catalogue

The Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) is the kernel-hosting foundation's sysadmin credential, and it has changed recently in two ways worth knowing. First, the exam is now distribution-independent — you no longer choose a distro; the tasks avoid distribution-specific tooling. Second, the certification is now valid for 2 years, shorter than the 3 years many older articles still cite.

The exam itself is performance-based and online proctored: two hours of command-line tasks across five weighted domains — Operations & Deployment (25%), Networking (25%), Storage (20%), Essential Commands (20%), Users and Groups (10%). The exam-only price is $445 as of August 2026 (bundles with training or the THRIVE-ONE subscription cost more), and registration includes one free retake, a 12-month eligibility window and two Killer.sh simulator sessions — a genuinely candidate-friendly package. There are no prerequisites, and no passing score is listed on the certification page.

One caution on older reading lists: the Linux Foundation Certified Cloud Technician (LFCT), launched in late 2022, was retired on 30 August 2025. It is no longer bookable, and no direct successor is named.

Other Linux-adjacent credentials you may encounter

Job descriptions and older CVs sometimes reference vendor certifications outside the big four ladders — Oracle Linux administration exams, SUSE Certified Linux Administrator exams and similar distribution-specific credentials. These validate the same core skills against a particular vendor's platform and tend to matter only in shops running that platform. How the ladders line up against each other

If you strip away branding, the market really offers three exam philosophies:

  1. Prove it on a live machine — Red Hat (all exams) and LFCS. Hardest to fake, most respected by hands-on hiring managers, and the most stressful to sit.
  2. Hybrid written-plus-simulation — CompTIA Linux+. One sitting, broad coverage, some practical verification.
  3. Written knowledge exams — the LPIC ladder. Widest conceptual coverage, most exams to pass, longest validity.

And three renewal clocks: LPI's 5 years, Red Hat's and CompTIA's 3 (CompTIA via ongoing CE rather than a resit), and the Linux Foundation's 2. Over a decade, that difference compounds — an LFCS-anchored career means recertifying far more often than an LPIC-anchored one, which is worth pricing into your decision alongside the sticker cost.

Which certification body should you look at first?

Budgeting for a certification honestly

Sticker price is only the first line of the bill, and the bodies differ sharply on what sits beneath it. Three cost layers to model before you commit:

  1. The exam fee itself. Roughly $400–$500 for the flagship credentials in Tier 1 markets, but regional pricing matters: LPI publishes explicitly regional rates, and Red Hat pricing varies by country and carries local taxes. Confirm the figure for your country on the provider's own page rather than trusting any article's number, including this one's.
  2. Retakes. The LFCS bundles one free retake into its $445 fee; the pack of benefits also includes two Killer.sh simulator sessions, which reduces the odds of needing that retake. Red Hat's retake policy is not something we can verify here — check redhat.com before assuming anything. For two-exam certifications like LPIC-1, a single weak exam means one $200 resit, not a full restart.
  3. Renewal over a decade. This is where the maths inverts. An LPIC-1 holder recertifies twice in ten years; an LFCS holder up to five times; CompTIA holders pay $50-a-year CE fees between cycles; Red Hat holders can extend lower credentials free by passing higher exams — the only ladder where climbing is renewing.

Training is the wildcard on top: Red Hat's recommended courses (RH124, RH134 and, for the Ansible exam, RH294) are priced separately from the exams, while self-study with a home lab costs little more than time. None of the four bodies requires paid training to sit its exams.

Frequently asked questions

Do Linux certifications expire?

Each body handles it differently. Red Hat credentials become "non-current" (Red Hat's term) after 3 years unless renewed by resitting or earning a higher credential. LPI certifications last 5 years, CompTIA Linux+ renews on a 3-year CE cycle, and LFCS is valid for 2 years. None of them vanishes from your history — but employers increasingly check currency.

Is there one certification that covers all distributions?

No single credential covers everything, but LPIC-1, CompTIA Linux+ and the LFCS are all deliberately vendor-neutral, and the LFCS is now explicitly distribution-independent in its task design. Red Hat exams test RHEL specifically — though most of what RHCSA covers transfers to any systemd-based distribution.

What did Red Hat change in 2026?
