The Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) is Red Hat's core credential for people who run Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems, earned by passing a single exam: EX200. There is nothing to memorise your way through — EX200 is a fully hands-on practical exam in which you complete real administration tasks on live systems, with no multiple-choice questions at all. Two things changed recently that older articles get wrong. First, Red Hat's EX200 exam page states the exam is now based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, having previously been delivered on RHEL 9. Second, on 11 May 2026 Red Hat restructured its entire certification programme into five tracks and five tiers, and the RHCSA is now the Administrator-tier credential of the Enterprise Linux track. The RHCSA is a certification from Red Hat, the company behind Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and it validates that you can perform the day-to-day work of a Linux system administrator on RHEL. Red Hat's certifications map to job roles rather than to reading lists, and the RHCSA maps to the general sysadmin role: managing systems, users, storage, services and security on the operating system itself.
That last point matters because of a common mix-up with Red Hat's next credential. Since 2019, the exam at the Engineer level (EX294) has been focused on Ansible automation rather than general Linux administration — so if you want a credential that proves broad, hands-on RHEL sysadmin competence, the RHCSA is that credential, not the RHCE. You earn the RHCSA by passing one exam, EX200, with no other certification required first.

Every figure above is either from Red Hat's own pages or clearly marked as third-party-reported; where you need a number to be exact — especially price in your country — confirm it on Red Hat's EX200 page before booking.
"Performance-based" means the exam gives you access to live RHEL systems and a list of tasks to complete on them. You are graded on whether the systems end up in the required state — the work itself is the answer sheet. There are no multiple-choice questions, no drag-and-drop items, and no written answers.
This format is Red Hat's defining feature. Vendor-neutral alternatives such as the LPI exams are entirely written, and CompTIA Linux+ mixes multiple-choice with some performance items — but every Red Hat exam puts you on a real machine for the whole session. For employers, that is precisely the appeal: an RHCSA on a CV asserts that the holder has actually done the work under supervision, not merely recognised correct answers.
Per Red Hat's exam page, there is no internet access during EX200. You do, however, have access to the product documentation installed in the exam environment. That is a genuine safety net — but only if you have practised using it, because searching unfamiliar documentation under time pressure costs minutes you will not have to spare. (Note that this concession is specific to EX200; the Ansible-focused EX294 at the next level prohibits bringing any documentation at all.)
Red Hat does not print the exam duration prominently on the public exam page, and third-party sources conflict on it, so treat any specific figure you read elsewhere with caution and check your booking confirmation.
Red Hat exams can be taken at a testing location or as remote exams. The logistics of remote delivery — equipment requirements, availability by country — change over time, so verify the current arrangements on Red Hat's exam-format pages rather than relying on a blog post.
Red Hat publishes the authoritative list of EX200 exam objectives on the official exam page, and that list — not any third-party summary — is the document your study should be built around. Red Hat updates objectives when the exam moves to a new RHEL version, and with the exam now based on RHEL 10, an objectives list saved from the RHEL 9 era may no longer match what you will face. In scope terms, the RHCSA covers the working competence of a RHEL system administrator — the operating-system-level skills that the rest of Red Hat's track structure builds on. What it deliberately does not cover is automation at scale: writing Ansible playbooks to configure fleets of machines is the territory of EX294, one tier up.

The US list price for an EX200 attempt is widely reported at $500 USD as of 2026. Red Hat does not print a single global price on the exam page because pricing varies by country and region, and taxes apply on top — so the only number that matters is the one shown at checkout for your location.
Budget realistically beyond the exam fee itself:
EX200 is scored out of 300, and a passing score of 210 — 70% — is widely reported by exam-prep sources. Red Hat itself does not publish that threshold prominently, so treat it as the community's working number rather than an official guarantee, and note that Red Hat publishes no pass rates for any of its exams.
Because grading is based on the end state of your systems, partial credit behaves differently than on a written exam: a task either leaves the system in the required state or it does not. The practical implication for candidates is that verifying your work matters as much as doing it.
There are no enforced prerequisites — anyone can book EX200. What Red Hat recommends is either its two-course sequence (RH124 Red Hat System Administration I and RH134 Red Hat System Administration II), the condensed RH199 Rapid Track course for experienced users, or equivalent real-world experience.
"Equivalent experience" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. A realistic self-assessment: if you administer Linux systems at work — even a different distribution — the gap to close is RHEL-specific tooling and exam-condition speed. If your Linux exposure is desktop use or a university module, the gap is the entire discipline of system administration, and the recommended courses (or a disciplined self-study equivalent) exist precisely for you. Red Hat certifications are current for three years. Red Hat's own wording is precise here: certifications "do not expire" but become "non-current" — your pass remains a matter of record, but after three years it no longer counts as a current credential for purposes like RHCE eligibility or employer verification of current status.

On 11 May 2026, Red Hat announced the largest reorganisation of its certification programme in years. The programme now consists of five tracks — Enterprise Linux, Ansible, OpenShift, Cloud-native Applications, and AI — each with five tiers: Technologist (a new, optional entry level), System Administrator/Developer, Engineer, Specialist (elective), and Architect. Credential names now carry track suffixes, such as "RHCA – Enterprise Linux".

Who should skip it: administrators in environments with no Red Hat footprint and no intention of adding one may get better mileage from a vendor-neutral credential, and pure automation specialists who already hold a current RHCSA have no reason to loop back.
