Plenty of candidates who could ace a written Linux test would fail EX200 tomorrow — because there is no written test. You sit at a terminal connected to live Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems and either put them into the required state or you don't. That single design decision is the honest answer to the difficulty question, and it cuts both ways: the exam is unforgiving of shallow knowledge, yet holds no traps for people who genuinely do this work.
Short answer: the RHCSA is moderately hard, and hard in an unusual way. There is no eliminating wrong options, no partial waffle, and no internet — your systems either work or they don't. It is very hard for candidates whose Linux knowledge comes mainly from reading or watching, and considerably more manageable for anyone who has spent real time administering Linux at a command line. Red Hat publishes no pass rate, so ignore any article quoting one.

Most certification exams measure recognition: shown four options, can you spot the right one? EX200 measures production: given an empty prompt, can you produce a working result? Those are different cognitive skills, and the gap between them is where almost all RHCSA difficulty lives.
Three properties of the exam, all stated on Red Hat's EX200 page, define the experience:
There is a fourth pressure worth naming: the clock. Red Hat does not state the exam's duration prominently on its public page and third-party figures conflict, but whatever the session length, candidates consistently describe time as scarcer than knowledge. A task you can complete but only slowly is, in exam terms, a task you half-know.
Yes, you can absolutely fail, and there is no shame in it — the format gives no marks for effort. The exam is scored out of 300, and the passing bar is widely reported by third-party prep sources as 210, or 70%. Red Hat does not publish that threshold prominently, so treat it as the community's working number, but the shape of the implication is solid either way: you can complete a clear majority of tasks and still fall short if the remainder go wrong.
Because grading is based on the final state of your systems, marks are binary in a way written exams are not. A configuration that is nearly right, or right until something restarts, earns the same as one you never attempted. Successful candidates internalise a verification habit — do the task, then prove to yourself the system reflects it — and that habit is a large part of what separates passes from near-misses.
As for the pass rate: Red Hat has never published one, for this or any of its exams. Any percentage you see attached to "RHCSA pass rate" is invented or extrapolated, and we will not repeat one here.
Difficulty is relative to where you start. Three profiles cover most people who find EX200 punishing:
Someone who has completed video courses and can explain concepts fluently, but whose fingers have spent few hours on an actual system. This is the most common failure profile, because conventional study habits — the ones that pass written exams — produce exactly this person. On a performance-based exam, explaining is not a scoreable action.
A capable IT professional whose daily work happens in graphical consoles. The skills transfer conceptually (users, storage, services and permissions exist everywhere), but EX200 assumes command-line fluency, and fluency is a speed property, not a knowledge property. It arrives only through repetition.
Is the RHCSA hard for beginners? Genuinely, yes — it is a professional credential mapped to a working sysadmin role, not an entry-level screening test. It is still achievable from scratch, but the distance is long: a beginner is learning Linux administration and exam execution simultaneously. Red Hat's recommended course sequence (RH124 and RH134) exists for exactly this journey, and beginners should budget patience accordingly — or consider whether a gentler first credential from our best Linux certifications for beginners round-up better matches their starting point.
The mirror image is just as real. A working Linux administrator with a year or two of daily terminal time typically finds the RHCSA a fair, even satisfying exam: the tasks resemble the job, the in-system documentation covers the flags nobody memorises, and the main adjustments are RHEL-specific tooling and working without a search engine. For this candidate, difficulty concentrates in exam craft — pacing, task triage, verification — rather than in the material itself.
That is the most useful reframing of the whole difficulty question: EX200 is less a hard exam than an accurate one. It reliably measures whether you can do the work, which feels brutal to those who cannot yet and reasonable to those who can.
Against the written, multiple-choice exams from vendor-neutral bodies — LPI's LPIC-1, or the largely multiple-choice CompTIA Linux+ — the RHCSA is harder in kind, not just in degree, because recognition strategies (elimination, educated guessing) simply do not exist in a live-system format. Within Red Hat's own ladder, the RHCSA is the easier of the two headline exams: the Ansible-focused EX294 layers automation on top of everything EX200 assumes, and we measure that gap separately in how hard the RHCE exam is.

What belongs here is the readiness test, because most people book too early or too late. You are ready when three statements are true:
If any of the three fails, the exam will feel hard because, for you, right now, it is. All three passing is what "RHCSA is manageable" feels like from the inside.
No. The in-environment product documentation (Red Hat confirms it is available on EX200) rescues forgotten details, not missing skills. Candidates who lean on it heavily run out of time; it rewards those who already know roughly where an answer lives.
They share the performance-based format, so neither offers multiple-choice comfort. The honest comparison is scope and stakes rather than raw difficulty — LFCS is distribution-independent, cheaper and shorter-lived (two-year validity) — and the beginner-angle trade-off is covered in our beginner certifications guide linked above.
Rebooking is possible and a failed attempt does not bar you from retaking. Red Hat's current retake terms — including whether any resit is bundled with your fee — should be confirmed on redhat.com at booking time, as we cannot verify them here.
Red Hat's exam page confirms EX200 is now based on RHEL 10, but Red Hat publishes no comparative difficulty data between versions. The practical risk is not the version itself — it is preparing on outdated materials, so check that anything you study targets the current objectives list.
Only if you were hoping to pass without being able to do the job — the one strategy this exam is built to defeat. For everyone else, RHCSA difficulty is best read as a distance measurement: reader-learners and GUI-background admins have a real but closable execution gap, beginners have a longer road that Red Hat's course sequence was designed for, and practising administrators are closer than they fear. Measure your own distance against the readiness test above, then close it deliberately with the step-by-step preparation plan — booked exams concentrate the mind, but only after the lab hours are in the bank.
