A surprising number of candidates treat the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) as easier and harder versions of the same exam. They are not. Since 2019, they have tested two different jobs: EX200 (RHCSA) examines whether you can administer a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) system by hand, while EX294 — the exam historically known as the RHCE exam — examines whether you can automate fleets of systems with Ansible. Choosing between them is really a question about which of those jobs you want to prove you can do.
Short answer: take the RHCSA first — it is the enforced prerequisite for the Engineer-tier credential, and EX294 assumes you already have RHCSA-level skills. Pursue the RHCE level as well if your role involves (or should involve) automation at scale; stop at RHCSA if you are early in your Linux career or your work is single-server administration.

The RHCSA is Red Hat's core system-administration credential. Its exam, EX200, is 100% performance-based: you work on live systems and there are no multiple-choice questions. The RHCE level sits one tier above it and has a much narrower — and deeper — focus: Ansible automation. In EX294, candidates write Ansible Automation Platform playbooks to perform real-world tasks across multiple systems, and Red Hat grades those playbooks by running them against freshly installed systems. Manual fixes that a playbook cannot reproduce earn you nothing. Unlike EX200, EX294 permits no documentation of your own, hard-copy or electronic, and no internet. One naming caveat matters in 2026. Following Red Hat's programme restructure announced on 11 May 2026, Red Hat's own pages now title EX294 "Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible", sitting in the Ansible track of a new five-track framework, with a pass counting towards Red Hat Certified Engineer in Ansible and Red Hat Certified Architect in Ansible. Historically, passing EX294 conferred the RHCE title directly. The exam content — Ansible automation on RHEL — is the same skill set either way, but check Red Hat's current pages for how the title will appear on your credential.

Both exams share Red Hat's defining trait: no written questions at all. If you cannot perform the task on a real system under time pressure, you do not pass. Yes, in the way that matters. Red Hat will let you sit EX294 without an RHCSA, but the Engineer-tier credential is only awarded to candidates who hold a current RHCSA. Sitting the exams out of order therefore buys you nothing except risk: a pass on EX294 sits in limbo until EX200 is done, and EX294 assumes RHCSA-level fluency anyway — you cannot troubleshoot a failing playbook if you cannot administer the target system it is configuring.
There is a pleasant mechanical bonus to the ordering, too. Red Hat credentials stay current for three years (Red Hat's wording is that they become "non-current" rather than expire), and earning a higher credential in the track pushes your RHCSA's non-current date out three years from the new pass. Take RHCSA, then RHCE within a year or two, and you have effectively renewed the first exam without retaking it.
Neither credential comes with a published salary premium, and you should distrust any article quoting one — no reputable named survey supports those percentages. What the data does show is the shape of the market the two credentials serve. PayScale (accessed 2026) puts the average US Linux system administrator salary at $92,316 per year, and a 2026 Coursera article reports RHCSA holders averaging roughly $80,000 in Linux administrator roles and around $109,000 as Linux systems engineers in the US. Pay varies widely by location, experience, industry and role, so treat those as orientation points, not promises.
The pattern worth noticing is that the engineer-level figure sits well above the administrator-level one, and automation skill is a large part of what separates those roles. The RHCE level is how Red Hat's programme certifies exactly that skill. If your goal is the engineering tier of the market, RHCSA alone is a starting line, not a destination. Work through these four questions rather than asking which credential is "better" in the abstract.
Two realistic scenarios to test yourself against. A junior admin with a year of Ubuntu experience moving into a RHEL shop should book EX200 and not think about EX294 until it is passed — the RHCSA skill set is the job description. A five-year sysadmin who already writes ad-hoc shell scripts to push changes to thirty servers is the textbook EX294 candidate: the exam formalises what the job is already demanding, and the credential arrives just as the market rewards it most.
