RHCSA vs RHCE: Which Should You Take?

RHCSA and RHCE test different jobs — system administration and Ansible automation. Compare scope, cost and payoff to pick the right Red Hat exam.

A surprising number of candidates treat the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) and Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) as easier and harder versions of the same exam. They are not. Since 2019, they have tested two different jobs: EX200 (RHCSA) examines whether you can administer a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) system by hand, while EX294 — the exam historically known as the RHCE exam — examines whether you can automate fleets of systems with Ansible. Choosing between them is really a question about which of those jobs you want to prove you can do.

Both exams share Red Hat's defining trait: no written questions at all. If you cannot perform the task on a real system under time pressure, you do not pass. Do you need RHCSA before RHCE?

Yes, in the way that matters. Red Hat will let you sit EX294 without an RHCSA, but the Engineer-tier credential is only awarded to candidates who hold a current RHCSA. Sitting the exams out of order therefore buys you nothing except risk: a pass on EX294 sits in limbo until EX200 is done, and EX294 assumes RHCSA-level fluency anyway — you cannot troubleshoot a failing playbook if you cannot administer the target system it is configuring.

There is a pleasant mechanical bonus to the ordering, too. Red Hat credentials stay current for three years (Red Hat's wording is that they become "non-current" rather than expire), and earning a higher credential in the track pushes your RHCSA's non-current date out three years from the new pass. Take RHCSA, then RHCE within a year or two, and you have effectively renewed the first exam without retaking it.

Neither credential comes with a published salary premium, and you should distrust any article quoting one — no reputable named survey supports those percentages. What the data does show is the shape of the market the two credentials serve. A decision framework: match the exam to your situation

Work through these four questions rather than asking which credential is "better" in the abstract.

  1. Do you hold a current RHCSA? If not, the decision is made for you: EX200 first. Everything at the Engineer tier depends on it.
  2. Does your work touch more than a handful of servers? If you routinely configure many systems — or watch colleagues do it with Ansible while you SSH into boxes one at a time — the RHCE level maps directly onto your next eighteen months.
