A candidate who drafted meticulous CompTIA A+ notes in 2024 and sat the exam in late 2025 was, without realising it, studying for a test that no longer existed: CompTIA launched the new 220-1201/220-1202 (V15) exams on 25 March 2025, replacing the 220-1101/1102 series. Notes do not announce their own expiry. The version number on the cover of your binder stays the same while the exam underneath it moves on.
Keeping notes current is a maintenance discipline, not a note-taking skill. Certification programmes revise on deliberate cycles. CompTIA notes that Security+ versions typically retire around three years after launch — SY0-701 arrived in November 2023, and as of 2026 CompTIA has named no successor, so SY0-701 remains the exam to study for (resist any note or course that invents a future code). AWS certifications are valid for three years, so recertifying candidates often return to notes written for an exam guide that has since been re-versioned. Even mid-version, details shift: AWS, for example, now displays abbreviated service names in questions, with a full-name list available through the in-exam Help button — a small change, but one that dated notes will not mention.
Three forces do the damage:
The single highest-value habit is putting a header block on your notes — physical or digital — that records three things: the exam code and version you wrote them against, the date of the official objectives or exam-guide document you used, and the date you last audited the notes. "Security+ SY0-701 — objectives downloaded Jan 2026 — last audited Aug 2026" turns an anonymous pile of pages into something you can validate in ten seconds.
Then keep the official objectives document itself inside your note system, not in a downloads folder. When the provider publishes a refresh, the comparison you need to run is new objectives against old objectives — your notes are only the third document in that meeting.
A systems administrator preparing for Security+ takes a four-month break for a house move, then resumes. Because her notes carry a header — "SY0-701, objectives dated Jan 2026" — her first study session back is a five-minute check of CompTIA's Security+ page: is SY0-701 still the listed exam? It is, so nothing structural has changed and she resumes with confidence rather than a vague worry that her material is stale. Without the header, she has no idea what she would even be checking against.
Run this whenever a provider announces a new exam version, and on a calendar schedule (monthly for an active prep cycle; quarterly if you are maintaining notes between certifications).
The whole pass takes an evening for most single-exam note sets, and it converts "I think my notes are mostly fine" into a page-level to-do list.
Old material in an active notebook is worse than a gap, because a gap prompts you to look something up while a stale page confidently mis-teaches you. The misconception that SY0-601 is the current Security+, or that A+ still means 220-1101/1102, survives precisely because old notes and old course rips keep re-circulating.
So prune ruthlessly from the active set, but archive rather than destroy. A "retired" section (or a dated archive folder digitally) preserves material that may return in a future role or a related exam, while guaranteeing your revision sessions only ever touch current pages. If you cannot say when a page was last verified, it belongs in the archive until you can.
Digital systems make this easier — tags like sy0-701 and verified-2026-08 are searchable — but the workflow is identical on paper: date every page as you write or audit it.
You do not need a separate "maintenance day" if updating is built into how you already review. Research on distributed practice (Cepeda et al., 2006) shows spaced encounters beat massed study for retention, so the pages you touch on that cadence are exactly the ones worth keeping accurate.
Practice questions are the other free audit signal. When a question contradicts your notes, one of them is wrong — and finding out which forces you back to the official documentation, which is the update mechanism working as intended. Working through a set of certification practice tests after each notes audit is a quick way to confirm the refreshed material actually holds up under retrieval, which is also simply better learning: testing yourself outperforms rereading for long-term retention (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). Make the header block universal, diff objectives whenever the provider publishes anything new, run a calendar audit monthly during active prep, archive anything unverifiable, and let spaced reviews and practice-question mismatches surface corrections between audits. That is five habits, none of which takes longer than an evening, and together they mean the notes you open the week before your exam describe the exam you will actually sit. As reference points: CompTIA describes a roughly three-year refresh cadence for Security+, AWS certifications are valid for three years, and A+ moved to new exam codes (220-1201/1202) in March 2025. Minor guide revisions can land at any time within a version's life.
Usually not. Run the objective diff first: objectives marked unchanged carry their notes across untouched, and your rewriting effort goes only into new, reworded or reweighted areas. A from-scratch rewrite throws away verified material along with the stale.
