How to Study Technical Topics You Find Difficult

A troubleshooting playbook for exam topics that refuse to make sense — diagnose missing prerequisites, switch formats, and rebuild understanding step by step.

A topic that refuses to click after three honest attempts is almost never a sign that you are not clever enough. It is usually a sign that you are studying the wrong layer: the explanation you keep rereading assumes a piece of knowledge you never picked up, so every pass slides off the same invisible gap. The fix is not more repetition of the same material — it is diagnosis.

This article is a troubleshooting playbook for exactly that situation: one or two certification topics that stay opaque while everything else moves along. First, diagnose why the topic isn't sticking

Before changing anything, work out which of these four failure modes you are in. Each has a different remedy, and applying the wrong remedy wastes weeks.

1. A prerequisite gap

Technical subjects are stacked. Subnetting makes no sense without binary; encryption makes no sense without keys; cloud networking makes no sense without ordinary networking. If an explanation feels like it is written in a language you half-know, the missing piece is probably one or two layers below the topic itself.

Test for it: open the explanation and highlight every term you could not define aloud to a colleague. If you highlight more than two or three per paragraph, you have a prerequisite gap, not a comprehension problem.

Fix: stop studying the exam topic entirely. Spend a session — sometimes just an hour — on the underlying concept from a beginner-level source, even one aimed at a more junior certification. This feels like going backwards. It is the fastest route forward, because every subsequent explanation of the stuck topic suddenly has something to attach to.

2. An abstraction problem

Some topics are taught abstractly (diagrams, definitions, acronyms) when what your brain needs is a concrete instance. You can read about load balancing ten times and still not "get" it, then watch one request travel through a system and understand it permanently.

Test for it: ask yourself, "could I give one specific real-world example of this?" If the answer is no, you have memorised a description, not built a model.

3. A vocabulary overload

Occasionally the concept is genuinely simple but buried under terminology. Storage, identity management and compliance topics are notorious for this: six vendor-specific names for four ideas.

Test for it: try explaining the topic with all jargon banned. If you can, and the sentences are sensible, your problem is vocabulary, not understanding.

Fix: treat the terms as a separate memorisation task and the concept as already learned. Build a small glossary in your own words, then drill the term–meaning pairs directly; the techniques in our article on memorising technical concepts are built for exactly this raw-detail work.

4. An illusion of difficulty

Sometimes a topic feels hard because you only ever meet it when you are tired, or because you failed one practice question on it early and now flinch at the name. The material itself may be no harder than the rest of the syllabus.

Test for it: attempt the topic first thing in a fresh session, before anything else. If it goes noticeably better, the topic was never the problem — your scheduling was.

Fix: permanently move your hardest topic to the start of your study sessions, when attention is highest, and let easier review fill the tired end of the session.

Switch the input before you add more hours

Once you know your failure mode, change the format of the explanation rather than the quantity. Rereading the same source is the lowest-value move available: the influential review by Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) rated rereading among the lowest-utility study techniques, while practice testing rated among the highest. If a source failed twice, it will probably fail a third time.

Rotate through genuinely different inputs:

  1. A second author. Different textbooks slice the same topic along different seams. One paragraph from the right author can unlock what three chapters from the wrong one could not.
  2. A different medium. Text → diagram → video → hands-on lab. Each medium forces a different mental representation.
  3. Questions before answers. Attempt practice questions on the topic before you feel ready. Retrieval attempts — even failed ones — strengthen later learning far more than passive review, a finding established in Roediger and Karpicke's test-enhanced learning research (2006). Working a handful of free sample questions on your stuck topic will also show you precisely which sub-skill the exam actually wants, which is often narrower than the textbook chapter suggests.
  4. Teach it badly. Explain the topic aloud to nobody, in plain language, and note exactly where you stall. The stall point is your real gap — this is the core of the Feynman method, and we cover the full procedure in our article on the Feynman technique for exam preparation.

Break the topic into examinable pieces

"I don't understand cryptography" is unactionable. "I can't tell when to use symmetric versus asymmetric encryption" is a 30-minute problem. Decomposition converts a dread-inducing blob into a checklist:

  1. Open the official exam objectives for your certification and copy out every sub-bullet under the stuck topic.
  2. Mark each sub-bullet ✓ (can answer questions on it), ? (shaky), or ✗ (no idea).
  3. Study only the ✗ items, in dependency order — earliest concept first.
  4. Re-test the whole topic with practice questions once the ✗ list is empty.

Most candidates who do this discover the "impossible" topic is 70% fine and 30% genuinely missing. That reframing alone reduces the anxiety that was making study sessions unproductive.

Know when to cap your losses

Not every hard topic deserves unlimited hours. Check how heavily your stuck topic is weighted on the exam blueprint — if it is worth a large slice of the exam, it earns the deep treatment above; if it is a minor domain, competence beats mastery. A sensible ceiling: once you are answering practice questions on the topic at roughly the same rate as the rest of the syllabus, stop polishing it and move on. Remember too that many major exams use compensatory scoring — AWS, for instance, states in its official exam guides that you need only pass overall, not every domain individually — so one weaker area rarely sinks an otherwise solid candidate.

A worked example

A network engineer preparing for a security certification kept failing every question involving public key infrastructure. Rereading the study guide's PKI chapter twice changed nothing. Diagnosis: she could not define "asymmetric encryption" without notes — a prerequisite gap. She spent one evening on a beginner-level explanation of key pairs, returned to the PKI chapter, and found it suddenly readable. Two days of practice questions later, PKI was her strongest domain. Total extra time: about four hours — less than she had already lost to rereading.

When the topic finally clicks, lock it in

Understanding decays fastest in the first days after it arrives. Schedule two or three short review sessions of the formerly stuck topic over the following weeks — spaced review reliably beats one long consolidation session, per the large distributed-practice synthesis by Cepeda and colleagues (2006). Then confirm the fix under realistic conditions: a timed practice test that mixes the topic in with everything else tells you whether the understanding survives context-switching and pressure, which isolated topic drills cannot.

The stuck topic is information, not a verdict

A topic that will not click is telling you something specific — a missing prerequisite, a missing example, a vocabulary pile-up, or a scheduling problem. Diagnose which one, change the input rather than the effort level, decompose the blob into objectives, and cap the time by exam weight. Candidates who treat difficulty as data rather than as evidence about themselves get through these topics in days, not months.
