How to Take Better Notes While Studying for Certification Exams

Note-taking methods for certification study — Cornell, mapping, outlines — plus how to capture from video courses and organise notes around the exam blueprint.

Most certification candidates do not have a note-taking problem so much as a transcription problem. Pause the video, copy the slide, resume, repeat — and six weeks later there is a 40-page document nobody will ever reread, organised in the instructor's order rather than the exam's. The notes feel like progress because they took effort, but effort spent copying is not effort spent learning.

Good certification notes do three jobs: they force you to process ideas as you capture them, they organise material around the exam's objectives rather than the course's chapters, and they end up in a form you can actually revise from. Why copying the course is the wrong default

Notes help you learn only to the extent that they make you select, condense and rephrase. Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review of study techniques rated passive approaches such as rereading and highlighting as low-utility — and verbatim notes are essentially a private copy of the material you will then reread. The value is in the transformation: deciding what matters, saying it your own way, and connecting it to what you already know. A useful rule of thumb: if your note could have been produced by a screenshot, it taught you nothing on the way in.

That has a practical corollary for certification study, where the source material is often enormous (official documentation, multi-hour video courses, 800-page guides): your notes should be dramatically shorter than the source. You are building a personal index of what you found new, confusable or heavily weighted — not a second copy of the syllabus.

Which note-taking method should you use?

There is no single best method; there is a best method per type of content. Certification material comes in recognisable shapes, and each shape has a natural fit.

The Cornell method — for lectures, videos and reading sessions

The Cornell format divides the page into a wide notes column, a narrow cue column on the left, and a summary strip at the bottom. During study, capture in the notes column. Afterwards — this is the step most people skip — write questions in the cue column ("What port does this service use? Why choose this option over that one?") and a two-line summary at the bottom.

The cue column is what makes Cornell more than a layout: cover the notes column and answer the cues from memory, and your notes become a self-testing instrument. Retrieval practice of exactly this kind is what Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 research found beats restudying for long-term retention. For exam prep, write cues in the same style as exam questions — scenario-flavoured where possible, not just definitions.

Outlines — for hierarchical material

Objectives, sub-objectives, features, options: much certification content is naturally a tree, and an indented outline captures it faithfully with minimal friction. Outlines are the fastest method for dense reading, and they map cleanly onto blueprint structure. Their weakness is that they hide cross-connections — an outline will not show you that a concept in domain 2 is the same mechanism reappearing in domain 4.

Mind mapping — for connection-heavy topics

Mind mapping — a central concept with branches radiating to related ideas — earns its place for exactly those cross-connections: how services interact, how a protocol stack fits together, which security control addresses which threat. Use it sparingly and deliberately, as a synthesis exercise at the end of a domain rather than a live capture method; drawing one from memory is itself a strong review activity, close in spirit to the Feynman technique.

A quick chooser

  • Watching a video course or attending a class → Cornell.
  • Working through documentation or a study guide → outline keyed to objectives.
  • Ending a domain, or untangling how pieces relate → mind map from memory, then check.
  • Meeting a concept you cannot explain simply → stop noting, run a Feynman loop, and file the resulting plain-language explanation as the note.

Digital or handwritten?

Both work; they trade off differently, and the honest answer depends on your sources and revision plan rather than on any universal finding.

Handwriting is slower, which is quietly an advantage: you cannot transcribe, so you are forced to condense. It also keeps you off a device full of distractions. Its costs are searchability and maintenance — certification content updates, and reorganising paper is painful.

Digital notes are searchable, effortlessly reorganisable, easy to key to blueprint objective numbers, and simple to convert into flashcards later. Their risk is frictionless verbatim capture — typing fast enough to transcribe means you probably are transcribing.

A pragmatic hybrid serves most candidates: capture by hand (or deliberately tersely on a keyboard) during first contact with the material, then do a same-week digital consolidation pass into your organised system. That consolidation is not busywork — rewriting from your rough notes is a retrieval-and-reprocessing step in itself.

Taking notes from video courses without pausing every ten seconds

Video is now the dominant certification study source, and it invites the worst habit: pause–copy–resume. Try this sequence instead:

  1. Skim the exam objectives for the section first, so you know what the video is meant to deliver and what deserves capture.
  2. Watch a whole segment without writing — typically five to fifteen minutes. Jot only timestamps next to moments you will want again.
  3. At the segment break, write from memory in your notes column: what was the point, what was new, what would you not have guessed?
  4. Rewind only for what you could not reconstruct. The rewind list is a gap report, exactly like a failed recall attempt — and far more informative than a perfect transcript.
  5. Do not screenshot slides as a substitute for notes. Capture a diagram if it is genuinely irreproducible, but annotate it in your own words or discard it.

Organise notes around the blueprint, not the course

The single highest-leverage organisational decision: structure your notes by the exam's objective domains, not by course modules or book chapters. Courses order material for teaching flow; the exam scores you by domain. When your notes mirror the blueprint you can instantly see which objectives have rich notes and which are nearly blank — a coverage map most candidates never get. Within that structure, three habits keep the system alive:

  • One home per topic. When a course revisits a topic, add to its existing note rather than creating "DNS (part 3)". Fragmented duplicates are why notes go unread.
  • Tag the confusables. Every certification has pairs candidates mix up. Keep a running "easily confused" note per domain — it becomes your highest-value revision page in the final week.
  • Mark questions, not just facts. When something puzzles you mid-capture, log the question with a marker (a "?" tag). Unresolved markers are your agenda for the next session.

A realistic pass through one study week

A network-certification candidate studying two evenings a week might run it like this. Tuesday: skim the objectives for the routing section, watch three video segments using the watch-then-write pattern, and leave with two rough Cornell pages plus one "?" about when to prefer one routing protocol over another. Thursday: consolidate those pages into the blueprint-organised digital notes, resolve the "?" from documentation, add "distance vector vs link state" to the domain's confusables note, and finish by answering Tuesday's cue-column questions from memory. Sunday, briefly: any cue that fails twice gets flagged for conversion to a flashcard. Total note volume for the week: perhaps a page and a half of dense, self-authored material — not twelve pages of slides.

When to stop taking notes

Notes are a means, and past a point they compete with better uses of the same hour. Signals that you should shift effort from capture to practice:

  • Your notes for a domain restate the objectives without adding your own connections, examples or confusions — you are indexing, not learning.
  • You revise by rereading your notes rather than testing yourself from them — see active recall vs rereading for why that ceiling is low.
  • You are polishing formatting. Colour-coding is not studying.

The natural next step after a solid capture-and-consolidate cycle is testing against exam-style material: a set of free sample questions per domain will tell you whether your notes captured what the exam actually asks, and the wrong answers will tell you what your next notes should contain.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take notes on practice questions?

Yes — but only on the ones you get wrong or guess. Note the concept the question was really testing and why the right answer wins, in your own words, filed under the relevant domain. A wrong-answer log is often the most exam-relevant notebook you will own.

Are provided course notes or slide PDFs a substitute for my own?

No. They are a reference, and useful as one, but they skip the processing that makes notes work. Use them to check your own notes for errors, not to replace them.

How long should my notes be for a large certification?

There is no fixed number, but the direction is clear: far shorter than the source, and weighted by blueprint percentage. If a 10%-weight domain has three times the notes of a 25%-weight domain, your capture is following interest rather than the exam.
