Strip away the apps and algorithms and spaced repetition rests on a single rule: review a topic again shortly before you would otherwise forget it, and lengthen the gap after every successful review.

Two consequences follow, and they shape everything below.

First, intervals should expand. Reviewing a topic daily forever is spaced in name only — it wastes time on material you already hold. If yesterday's review went well, the next one can wait longer.

Middle weeks — the crossover. Reviews now claim a meaningful slice of each session.   • Starting the system in the last fortnight. Spacing compounds over weeks. Late adopters get a fraction of the benefit and conclude the method is overrated.
