Here is the fact that should anchor this whole decision: Microsoft holds roughly 20% of the global cloud infrastructure market and Google Cloud about 13%, per Synergy Research Group's figures for Q3 2025. That seven-point gap translates directly into job adverts — there are simply more organisations running Azure, especially large enterprises already living in Microsoft 365 and Entra ID. So why does anyone choose the Google Cloud track? Because market share measures where the jobs are, not where your particular career is going — and on data engineering, machine learning and cloud-native work, Google Cloud certifications punch well above that 13%.
Short answer: choose Azure certifications if your target employers are enterprises, government or Microsoft-stack shops, or if your current company runs Azure — the market is larger and the ladder (AZ-900 → AZ-104 → AZ-305) maps cleanly onto enterprise roles. Choose Google Cloud certifications if you are aiming at data, ML/AI or startup-leaning engineering roles, or your employer runs GCP — the credentials are scarcer, well regarded, and Skillsoft's top-paying-certifications research has repeatedly placed Professional Cloud Architect at or near the top of US salary rankings. Neither is a wrong answer; picking against your actual job market is.

The structural differences between these certification programmes matter as much as the platforms themselves, because they change what your study plan and renewal life look like for years.
Azure's ladder (as of August 2026, mid-way through Microsoft's largest certification overhaul since 2019): fundamentals certs like Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) that never expire; role-based associate certs such as Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), Azure Network Engineer Associate (AZ-700) and Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700); and an expert tier where Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) requires you to hold AZ-104 first — one of only two Microsoft certs with a hard prerequisite (DevOps Engineer Expert AZ-400 is the other). Be aware the overhaul retired several familiar exams in 2026, including AZ-204 (Developer) and AZ-500 (Security Engineer, retiring 31 August 2026), with AI-focused successors arriving; check current status on Microsoft Learn before committing to any Azure exam.
Google Cloud's ladder: 13 active certifications in three tiers — Foundational (Cloud Digital Leader, Generative AI Leader), Associate (Cloud Engineer, Data Practitioner, Google Workspace Administrator) and eight Professional certs (Architect, Data Engineer, DevOps, Security, Network, Machine Learning, Database, Developer). Crucially, there are no prerequisites anywhere — you may sit Professional Cloud Architect without ever taking Associate Cloud Engineer. Google Cloud exams also have no exam codes; they are named credentials only.

Azure's employer base skews towards the organisations that already buy Microsoft: large enterprises, public sector, financial services, and any company whose identity layer is Entra ID. For these employers, an Azure Administrator Associate is a directly legible qualification — it names the job. If you search vacancies in most non-US markets, Azure roles typically outnumber GCP roles by a comfortable margin, consistent with that 20-vs-13 market-share picture.
Google Cloud's demand is narrower but pointed. GCP shows up disproportionately in data-platform and machine-learning job descriptions, in digital-native companies, and in organisations that adopted BigQuery even while running other clouds for general workloads. That is why the Professional Data Engineer and Professional Machine Learning Engineer credentials carry weight beyond Google-only shops — and why Skillsoft's 2025 top-paying certifications list reports an average of about $190,000 for Professional Cloud Architect holders in the US (Skillsoft's survey figures; salaries vary enormously by location, experience and role, and a certification alone guarantees none of it).
The honest tiebreaker is boring: which platform does your current or target employer run? A certification aligned with the infrastructure you can actually touch every day compounds; one aligned with a hypothetical future employer does not.
Neither provider publishes pass rates, so treat difficulty claims structurally.
At the first technical rung, Google's Associate Cloud Engineer (50–60 questions, 2 hours, $125, 6+ months hands-on recommended) and Microsoft's AZ-104 (100 minutes, hands-on portal/CLI/PowerShell experience expected) are comparable in seriousness; both are a big step up from their respective fundamentals exams. AZ-104's reputation for toughness among associate certs is deserved — its five domains span identity, storage, compute, networking and monitoring.
At the top, the character diverges. Google's Professional Cloud Architect leans on case studies and gives you no score feedback whatsoever — pass/fail, confirmed within 7–10 days. Azure's AZ-305 is a pure design exam but sits behind the AZ-104 prerequisite, so the path is longer even if no single Azure exam out-brutalises PCA. Google's retake rules are also stricter than most candidates expect: a maximum of four attempts in two years for associate/professional exams, with waits of 14, then 60, then 365 days between failures. Over a five-year career window, the certification you keep matters more than the certification you earn, and here the two programmes could hardly be more different.
If you plan to hold three or four certifications simultaneously, Azure's model is dramatically cheaper to maintain. If you hold one flagship credential, Google's cost is modest — but its two-year professional cycle keeps you permanently closer to your next exam.
The enterprise IT administrator (on-prem AD, VMware, Microsoft shop). Azure, without much debate. Your existing knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory and Microsoft licensing transfers directly, and AZ-104 formalises skills your employer already needs. Start with AZ-900 only if cloud is genuinely new to you; otherwise go straight at AZ-104 practice questions and objectives — there is no prerequisite forcing the fundamentals exam first.
The data engineer or aspiring ML engineer. Google Cloud. BigQuery-centred data platforms are where GCP is strongest, and the Associate Data Practitioner → Professional Data Engineer route is purpose-built for this career. The Professional Machine Learning Engineer has been updated for the Gemini-era platform, keeping it current with where the field moved. Azure's answer (DP-700, Fabric Data Engineer) is credible, but this is the one lane where Google's smaller market share stops mattering.
The generalist with no employer constraint. Slight edge to Azure on volume of opportunity — 20% versus 13% market share is the closest thing this decision has to a base rate — with the caveat that Azure certs currently sit mid-overhaul, so verify any exam's status before booking. The architect-track engineer already senior. Either flagship serves; pick by ecosystem. Google's PCA is a single exam (no prerequisites, $200) with a fearsome case-study format and a two-year clock; Azure Solutions Architect Expert is a two-exam commitment (AZ-104 then AZ-305) with free annual renewal. Working through Professional Cloud Architect practice questions versus AZ-305 practice questions for a week each is a cheap way to feel which platform's mental model fits you — analyse which wrong answers you pick and why, rather than chasing a score.
Consider two engineers at the same mid-sized insurer, both with three years of infrastructure experience. The company runs Azure for core workloads but licenses BigQuery for its analytics team.
Priya works on the platform team, provisioning VMs, virtual networks and Entra ID access daily. For her, the Azure track is close to free career capital: her day job is AZ-104's syllabus, her employer will recognise the credential immediately, and AZ-305 gives her a two-year runway to the architect title she wants internally. Certifying on Google Cloud would mean studying a platform she cannot touch at work — slower to learn, harder to apply, invisible at her next review.
Dan sits on the analytics team, spending most of his week in BigQuery and data pipelines. His platform-team badge options are the same as Priya's, but the credential that changes his trajectory is Google's Professional Data Engineer — it certifies exactly the work he already does and is legible to every data-platform employer he might approach next. That his company is "an Azure shop" is almost irrelevant to his lane.
Same employer, opposite answers — which is the point. The provider question resolves at the level of your role and daily tooling, not the company logo on the cloud bill.
Structurally they are hard in different ways rather than one being harder. Google's flagship uses case studies, gives pass/fail results with no score report, and enforces strict retake waits (14, 60, then 365 days). Azure exams give scaled scores, allow a retake after 24 hours, but gate the Expert tier behind a mandatory prerequisite cert. Neither provider publishes pass rates, so ignore precise difficulty percentages you see quoted elsewhere.
Yes, and for data professionals in Azure-centric companies it is a common combination. The sensible order is depth first: reach associate or professional level on the provider you use daily, then add the other provider's associate cert — shared cloud concepts make the second track substantially faster.
Exam fees are broadly similar (Google: $99/$125/$200 plus tax; Microsoft: priced by country, with US figures around $99/$165 commonly cited but not officially published). The bigger long-run difference is renewal: Azure role-based certs renew annually for free online, while Google professional certs need a paid renewal exam every two years.
Azure role-based certs technically expire fastest — after one year — but free unlimited-retake renewal makes that a formality. Google professional certs expire after two years with paid renewal, which in practice is the more demanding treadmill. Azure fundamentals certs and no Google tier share the "never expires" property — only Microsoft's fundamentals do.

Breadth points to Azure — bigger market, enterprise gravity, free renewals, a clean AZ-900 → AZ-104 → AZ-305 ladder. Depth in data, ML and cloud-native engineering points to Google Cloud — sharper specialist credentials, strong salary signal on the architect flagship, and no prerequisite gates slowing you down.
