The most common mistake candidates make with this comparison is treating CompTIA Network+ and the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) as two brands of the same product. They are not. Network+ is a vendor-neutral survey of networking fundamentals; CCNA is a deeper, Cisco-flavoured associate credential that expects you to configure and troubleshoot real devices. Which is "better" depends entirely on where you are and where you are heading.
Short answer: CCNA carries more weight with employers hiring for network-engineer roles and goes considerably deeper, but it is also the harder and longer climb. Network+ is the better choice if you are still in general IT support, want breadth across vendors, or need a gentler first networking credential. If you already know you want to work on networks for a living, CCNA is usually the stronger investment.
This article compares the two head-to-head on difficulty, depth, cost, renewal and recognition. It is a decision article, not a study guide — once you have chosen, prepare with each provider's official objectives and a structured course.
CompTIA Network+ is a vendor-neutral certification from CompTIA. The current exam version, N10-009, launched in June 2024. It covers networking concepts, infrastructure, operations, security fundamentals and troubleshooting without tying any of it to one manufacturer's equipment. CompTIA recommends (but does not require) A+ plus 9–12 months in a junior network support role.
The CCNA is Cisco's associate-level networking certification, earned by passing a single exam, 200-301 (exam topics v1.1, in effect since August 2024). It covers network fundamentals, IP connectivity and services, security fundamentals, and automation and programmability — including, since the v1.1 update, generative AI awareness and cloud network management. Although the concepts transfer anywhere, configuration syntax and many exam scenarios assume Cisco IOS.
Neither exam has formal prerequisites. Cisco suggests a year or more of hands-on networking experience for CCNA; that gap in recommended experience is your first clue about relative depth.

CCNA is the harder exam, and not by a small margin. Network+ asks you to recognise, explain and troubleshoot at a conceptual level: ports and protocols, network topologies, wireless standards, common failure modes. Its performance-based questions add some applied work, but the exam rewards broad understanding over configuration skill.
CCNA expects that same conceptual grounding and then layers on subnetting fluency under time pressure, routing and switching behaviour in detail (including spanning-tree protection features such as Root Guard and BPDU Guard, expanded in v1.1), plus lab-style items that simulate working on Cisco devices. Candidates who sit both consistently describe CCNA as a step up in both volume and depth.
One honest difficulty caveat: CompTIA publishes its passing score (720 on a 100–900 scale), while Cisco publishes neither the CCNA question count nor its passing threshold. Any specific figure you see quoted for CCNA — "about 825 to pass", "102 questions" — is a community estimate, not official. Judge difficulty by the exam-topics documents, not by rumoured numbers, and never by pass rates, which neither vendor publishes.
Depth is CCNA's clearest win. Where Network+ tells you what OSPF is for, CCNA expects you to understand how it behaves and how to verify it on a device. Where Network+ covers IP addressing, CCNA demands quick, accurate subnetting. The 200-301 blueprint also carries meaningful automation and programmability content, which Network+ touches far more lightly.
Vendor neutrality cuts the other way. Network+ knowledge maps cleanly onto Juniper, Aruba, Fortinet or cloud networking because it never commits to one syntax. If your employer runs a mixed estate — or you plan to move toward security or cloud rather than pure networking — that breadth is genuinely useful rather than a consolation prize. Cisco's dominance in enterprise networking means CCNA skills travel well anyway, but the certification is unambiguously a Cisco credential.
A fair rule of thumb: Network+ certifies that you understand networks; CCNA certifies that you can run one.
Sticker prices first. The CCNA exam has a $300 US base fee (local currency, taxes and fees vary — one attempt, no free retake, and a failed attempt means a five-calendar-day wait before rebooking at full price). Network+ lists at about $399 in the US following CompTIA's June 2026 price increase, per CompTIA's authorised resellers; discounted vouchers are common and legitimate, and pricing differs by country. Confirm current fees on comptia.org and cisco.com before booking.
Counter-intuitively, the easier exam now carries the higher list price. Over a three-year cycle, though, the totals converge. Both certifications last three years. Network+ renews through CompTIA's Continuing Education programme — 30 CEUs, a CertMaster CE course, or passing a higher CompTIA exam, with CE fees payable when renewing via CEU upload. CCNA renews by re-passing an exam, passing any professional-level Cisco exam, or earning 30 Cisco CE credits. Budget for study materials and possible retakes on either path; the exam voucher is rarely the whole cost.
For roles with "network" in the title — network administrator, network engineer, NOC analyst — CCNA is the stronger and more frequently requested signal, particularly in organisations that run Cisco equipment. It tells a hiring manager you have wrestled with configuration and troubleshooting, not just terminology.
Network+ shows up more in generalist IT-support and desktop-support listings, and in US government-adjacent environments where CompTIA certifications are established baseline credentials. It is respected as evidence of fundamentals rather than as a networking-specialist credential.
Salary data points the same direction, with the usual caveats. In the Skillsoft IT Skills and Salary survey fielded in 2024 (published 2025), US professionals holding CCNA reported an average salary of $112,333. For role-level context, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $96,800 (May 2024) for network and computer systems administrators, against $76,220 for computer network support specialists and $61,860 for computer user support specialists (May 2025 OEWS). These are averages and medians for people who hold the certification or the role — driven heavily by experience, employer and location — not payouts attached to a certificate. No equivalent named survey figure for Network+ holders was available for this article, so treat any "Network+ salary" number you see elsewhere with suspicion.
Work through these four questions in order.
A realistic scenario: a desktop-support analyst with 18 months' experience, no exposure to managed switches, and a goal of "something more technical" is better served by Network+ now — it converts quickly into a credential and a vocabulary — with CCNA a year later once the fundamentals are load-bearing. Their colleague who already patches switches and reads configs in a Cisco shop should go straight at CCNA and not pay for the intermediate step.

Usually not at the same time. CCNA covers Network+'s core territory and more, so holding both adds little signalling value for networking roles — employers hiring network engineers will read the CCNA and stop there. The sequence makes sense as a progression (Network+ early in your career, CCNA when you specialise) rather than as a pair to collect. One administrative footnote: passing a higher-level CompTIA exam renews lower CompTIA certifications, but Cisco and CompTIA renewal programmes are entirely separate — a CCNA does not renew a Network+.
Comparing exam fees instead of total cost of ownership. The voucher is the visible cost; study materials, lab access, possible retakes and three-yearly renewal are the real budget. Cisco charges the full fee for every retake after a five-day wait, and CompTIA's retake policy allows an immediate second attempt but also at full price unless you bought a retake bundle. Whichever exam you choose, price a realistic worst case of two attempts.
Trusting unofficial numbers. Because Cisco publishes so little about the CCNA's mechanics, the internet fills the vacuum with confident, unsourced figures — question counts, passing scores, pass rates, "average study hours". None are official for either exam beyond what CompTIA prints (90 questions maximum, 720 to pass). Build your plan on the published exam-topics documents instead.
Assuming the certifications stack. They do not. CompTIA's renewal ecosystem and Cisco's Continuing Education programme are separate worlds with separate credits, fees and rules. Earning one does nothing for the other's renewal clock, so holding both means maintaining both.
Studying for the comparison instead of the exam. Some candidates spend months reading "which is better" content (this article included) as displacement activity. The comparison takes an evening of honest self-assessment; the value is in the eighteen weeks of study that follow it.

There is no universal winner here, because the two exams are answering different questions. Choose Network+ if you are early in IT, still building fundamentals, targeting generalist support roles, or heading somewhere networking-adjacent rather than networking-central. Choose CCNA if network engineering is the goal, your target employers run Cisco, or you already work hands-on with networks and want the credential that certifies it. Choose CCNA later — after Network+ — if you want both the gentle on-ramp and the specialist signal, in that order.
