AWS vs Azure vs Google Cloud Certification: Which Is Best?

The most persistent myth in cloud certification is that this is a technology comparison — that you should pick the "best cloud" and certify on it. It is not. AWS, Azure and Google Cloud are all mature, capable platforms; nobody's career fails because their chosen hyperscaler had weaker object storage. What differs, sharply, is everything around the certifications: how many employers are hiring for each, what the exams cost to earn and keep, how the ladders are structured, and which career lanes each provider's credentials genuinely accelerate. This article compares all three tracks on those factors and finishes with concrete recommendations by circumstance — because "which is best?" only has an answer once we know whose career we are talking about.

Short answer: AWS certifications reach the largest job market and remain the default first track when nothing else decides it. Azure certifications win wherever Microsoft-centric enterprises, government and large corporates dominate — which in many regions is most of the market. Google Cloud certifications are the specialist's pick, strongest for data engineering and machine learning careers and backed by striking salary-survey results for its architect flagship. The deciding factors, in order: the platform your employer (or target employer) actually runs; your career lane; and only then cost, difficulty and renewal mechanics.

The market question: who is hiring for what?

Start with the only independent, citable market data in this debate. Per Synergy Research Group (published November 2025, covering Q3 2025), the global cloud infrastructure market split was: AWS 29%, Microsoft 20%, Google Cloud 13% — together 63% of a $106.9 billion quarterly market. Synergy also noted the direction of travel: AWS averaged just under 30% over the prior four quarters, down from roughly 32% in 2021, while Microsoft and Google gained ground.

Read carefully, that tells you three things:

  1. AWS certifications address the widest pool of employers. Scale is corroborated by AWS's own figures: more than 1.42 million active AWS certifications held by over 1.05 million individuals as of January 2025. That cuts both ways — biggest demand, but also the most fellow certificate-holders competing with you.
  2. Azure's 20% under-represents its hiring weight in enterprise segments. Organisations that standardised on Microsoft 365 and Entra ID lean Azure for cloud, and those organisations — banks, insurers, governments, manufacturers — do an outsized share of formal, certification-valuing hiring.
  3. Google Cloud's 13% under-represents its weight in data and AI roles. GCP appears in data-platform job descriptions far beyond its general market share, largely on the strength of BigQuery and its ML tooling.

Market share is a base rate, not a verdict. It is the tiebreaker when nothing about your situation breaks the tie first.

The three ladders at a glance

All three programmes are tiered, but the tiers behave differently.

AWS (as of August 2026): Foundational ($100 — Cloud Practitioner CLF-C02, AI Practitioner AIF-C01), Associate ($150 — Solutions Architect SAA-C03, Developer DVA-C02, CloudOps Engineer SOA-C03, Data Engineer DEA-C01, Machine Learning Engineer MLA-C01), Professional ($300 — Solutions Architect SAP-C02, DevOps Engineer DOP-C02, plus the new Generative AI Developer AIP-C01), and Specialty ($300 — Security SCS-C03; Advanced Networking retires 31 December 2026). No prerequisites for any exam. All valid three years. Active cert holders get a 50% discount voucher for their next exam.

Azure: Fundamentals (AZ-900 and peers — never expire), role-based Associates (AZ-104 Administrator, AZ-700 Network Engineer, DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer, PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst and others), and an Expert tier where Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires holding AZ-104 before AZ-305 counts, and DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) likewise requires a prior associate. Microsoft prices by country rather than publishing flat USD figures, does not publish question counts, and — critically for 2026 — is mid-way through a sweeping portfolio overhaul that has already retired AZ-204, AI-102, DP-100 and DP-203, with AZ-500 retiring 31 August 2026 and AI-focused successors arriving. Cost: the sticker price is the small number

Exam fees cluster tightly — roughly $100 for entry tier, $125–$165 for the middle, $200–$300 at the top — so fees should almost never decide this. What diverges is total cost of ownership:

  • Azure is cheapest to maintain. Role-based certs expire annually, but renewal is a free, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn with unlimited retakes. Hold five Azure certs and your renewal bill is zero.
  • AWS sits in the middle. Three-year validity, renewed by retaking or by passing a higher exam that covers it (SAP-C02 renews SAA and Cloud Practitioner in one sitting), softened by the 50% voucher every active holder gets.
  • Google Cloud is the most expensive per year at the top. Professional certs last only two years, and renewal exams cost real money ($100 for Professional Cloud Architect). The no-exam Google Skills path extends validity by just one year. Miss your window by more than 30 days and you are back to the full exam at full price.

None of these figures includes preparation, and for all three providers hands-on practice time — not courseware — is the dominant cost.

Difficulty: three flavours of hard

No provider here publishes pass rates, so compare formats. AWS professional exams are endurance tests of scenario judgement — 75 long questions in 180 minutes, with distractors that all "work". Google's Professional Cloud Architect substitutes case studies (two per sitting, 20–30% of questions) and withholds all score feedback, and Google's retake ladder is the harshest: four attempts maximum in two years, with waits stretching from 14 to 365 days. Microsoft's exams are shorter (100 minutes at associate tier) with the gentlest retake policy (24 hours after a first fail), but the Expert tier's prerequisite chain makes the path the longest. At the entry-technical rung — SAA-C03 versus AZ-104 versus Associate Cloud Engineer — the three are broadly comparable in seriousness, and all three assume months of genuine hands-on use. Salary signals: what can honestly be said

Certification salary claims are mostly folklore, so here is the verified subset. Skillsoft's top-paying IT certifications research has repeatedly featured cloud architect credentials at the summit: its 2025 list reports an average of about $190,000 for Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect holders in the US (after the same credential topped its 2024 list). Skillsoft's reports have also regularly ranked AWS Solutions Architect certifications and Azure Solutions Architect Expert among the highest-paying — though we could not verify exact current dollar figures for those against the primary source, so we will not quote any. Treat all of these as survey averages of self-reported US data: pay varies enormously by country, city, experience and role, and no certification produces a salary by itself. What the pattern does support is a modest claim: architect-level cloud credentials from any of the big three sit near the top of the certification pay landscape, so the provider choice matters less to your ceiling than reaching the architect tier does.

Recommendations by circumstance

Your employer already runs one of them → certify on that one

The strongest signal available. Certifications compound when you apply them daily to real infrastructure, and your employer's platform gives you sanctioned hands-on access, internal problems to practise on, and immediate relevance at review time. This overrides market share entirely.

First cloud certification, no employer constraint → AWS

With 29% market share, the largest certified community, no prerequisites, and a ladder that runs clean from Cloud Practitioner to the professional tier, AWS is the default for a reason: it maximises the number of doors one credential opens. A realistic sequence for a career-changer: skip Cloud Practitioner if you are already technical (there is no prerequisite requiring it), build 6–12 months of hands-on practice, then take Solutions Architect – Associate. If your CV is aimed at organisations living in Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Windows estates, Azure Administrator Associate is the most directly legible credential you can hold, and the AZ-104 → AZ-305 path maps onto real enterprise architect roles. The free annual renewal model also suits professionals juggling several credentials. Data engineering or machine learning career → Google Cloud

The one lane where the smallest provider is the strongest pick. The Associate Data Practitioner → Professional Data Engineer route is purpose-built for data careers, the Professional Machine Learning Engineer has been updated for the Gemini-era platform, and the Professional Cloud Architect's salary-survey record speaks for itself. Accept the trade-offs knowingly: two-year professional validity, paid renewals, strict retake limits and pass/fail-only feedback. Multi-cloud reality → one provider deep, then broaden

Certifying shallowly on all three is the classic mistake — three fundamentals certs signal tourism, not competence. Go deep on one provider to the associate or professional tier first; cloud concepts (identity, networking, storage classes, IaC) transfer at a discount, so a second provider's associate cert typically takes a fraction of the first one's study time. Common mistakes in the three-way decision

  1. Waiting to pick the "winning" cloud. All three are growing in absolute terms inside a $100B+ quarterly market. The cost of waiting exceeds the cost of picking the second-best fit.
  2. Comparing exam fees instead of renewal economics. A $99 Google exam with a $100-every-two-years renewal and a country-priced Azure exam with free renewals are different products over five years.
  3. Equating the three providers' "associate" tiers. Azure role-based certs expire in one year; AWS and GCP associates last three. Same word, different contracts.
  4. Trusting outdated exam lists. As of 2026: AWS retired its Machine Learning Specialty (March 2026) and renamed SysOps to CloudOps Engineer (SOA-C03); Microsoft retired AZ-204, AI-102, DP-100 and DP-203; Google retired the Professional Workspace Administrator. The verdict, such as it is

Best is a function of the reader. AWS is the best default — biggest market, deepest community, cleanest no-prerequisite ladder. Azure is the best enterprise career track and the cheapest to maintain long-term. Google Cloud is the best specialist track for data and AI, with the strongest published salary signal at architect level and the most demanding renewal treadmill. And all three are dominated by one factor that never appears in comparison tables: the platform you can actually use at work tomorrow.
