Here is the fact that should anchor this decision: a Microsoft role-based certification expires after one year but renews free with an open-book online assessment, while a Google Cloud Professional certification lasts two years and costs money to renew. Two vendors, two completely different philosophies about what a credential is — and those philosophies run through everything else, from exam design to the kinds of employers who care.
Short answer: choose Azure certifications if your career runs through enterprises, hybrid environments and Microsoft-centric IT departments — Azure's second-place market position and its deep footprint in organisations that already run Microsoft 365 and Entra ID mean more job adverts in most regions. Choose Google Cloud certifications if you are heading towards data engineering, analytics or machine learning roles, or targeting companies that picked GCP for exactly those strengths. Neither track is "harder" in a way that should decide it for you; the deciding factor is where you want to work.

Both vendors run a three-tier structure, but the tiers behave differently.
Microsoft organises certifications by job role. At the bottom sit the fundamentals certifications — Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) is the flagship — which are 45-minute exams with no prerequisites and, unusually, never expire. Above them are role-based associate certifications such as Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), and at the top two expert certifications: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) and DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400). These experts are the only Microsoft certifications with hard prerequisites — you must hold AZ-104 (or, for AZ-400, a qualifying associate) before the expert credential is awarded, even if you pass the exam.
Google Cloud runs Foundational, Associate and Professional tiers with a flat pricing pattern: $99, $125 and $200 respectively, plus tax where applicable. As of 2026 the active line-up is thirteen certifications: two foundational (Cloud Digital Leader and Generative AI Leader), three associate (Cloud Engineer, Data Practitioner, Google Workspace Administrator) and eight professional, including Professional Cloud Architect and Professional Data Engineer. Google Cloud exams have no exam codes at all — there is no "GCP-104"; credentials go by name only. And crucially, nothing on the Google side has prerequisites: you can sit Professional Cloud Architect without ever taking Associate Cloud Engineer.
One structural note that catches people out: Microsoft is midway through its largest certification overhaul since 2019, with several familiar role-based certifications (including the Azure Developer AZ-204 and, by the end of August 2026, Azure Security Engineer AZ-500) retired or retiring in favour of new AI-focused credentials. The core path this article discusses — AZ-900 → AZ-104 → AZ-305 — remains active and safe to plan around, but check the Microsoft Learn page for any certification before committing study time.

Azure's argument is scale inside the organisations most people actually work for. Synergy Research Group's Q3 2025 figures put Microsoft at 20% of the global cloud infrastructure market against Google Cloud's 13% — and Azure's share is concentrated in precisely the enterprises, public-sector bodies and regulated industries that hire in volume. If a company runs Microsoft 365, manages identity through Entra ID and licenses Windows Server, Azure is usually its path of least resistance into the cloud, and its job adverts name Azure certifications.
That has three practical consequences for certification value:
The renewal model quietly strengthens the career case too. A role-based Azure certification expires after twelve months, which sounds punishing until you see the mechanism: renewal is free, online, open-book and can be attempted repeatedly within the six-month window before expiry. In practice your credential stays current with the platform at zero cost — you are never asked to pay Microsoft again to keep a certification alive.
The trade-offs: Microsoft does not print exam prices (fees are set per country or region, so confirm yours at scheduling time), does not publish question counts, and the current overhaul means you must verify any certification's status before you start studying for it.
Google Cloud's certification track earns its keep in a narrower but often better-paid lane. Companies that choose GCP frequently choose it for data and machine learning workloads, and the certification portfolio mirrors that: Professional Data Engineer, Professional Machine Learning Engineer and Professional Database Engineer sit alongside the architect and DevOps credentials, with an Associate Data Practitioner added as a newer entry point for data careers. The Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam has even been updated to reflect Google's shift from Vertex AI towards the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform — a sign of how quickly this track follows the AI market.
There is also a headline number worth knowing, properly attributed: Skillsoft's 2025 top-paying IT certifications list reports an average of about $190,000 for Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect holders in the US, and the same credential topped Skillsoft's 2024 list. That is survey data from one report, US respondents only, and pay always varies with location, experience and role — but it does indicate that scarcity works in a GCP-certified candidate's favour where demand exists.
Exam design is a further differentiator. Professional Cloud Architect includes two case studies per sitting — drawn from a published pool of four and making up 20–30% of the questions — which pushes you to reason about a whole business scenario rather than isolated facts. Google publishes only pass/fail results, with no numeric score, so preparation is about genuine coverage rather than chasing a threshold.
The trade-offs: fewer job adverts in most markets, a two-year validity on Professional certifications (shorter than anything Microsoft or the other major vendors impose), and paid renewal — a $100, one-hour renewal exam for Professional Cloud Architect, for example, or a Google Skills course path that extends validity by only one year. Budget for maintenance in a way an Azure candidate never has to.

Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) is a genuine beginner credential: a 45-minute exam on cloud concepts, Azure architecture and governance, with no prerequisites and no expiry. Its closest Google counterpart is Cloud Digital Leader — 50–60 questions in 90 minutes for $99, recently refreshed, valid three years. Both are awareness-level certifications suited to career changers, sales and delivery staff, and anyone proving baseline cloud literacy.
Google Associate Cloud Engineer is a step up: a two-hour, $125 exam for which Google recommends six or more months of hands-on Google Cloud experience. Its Azure counterpart is AZ-104, the 100-minute Azure Administrator Associate exam, which expects working familiarity with the portal, PowerShell, the Azure CLI and ARM or Bicep templates. If you compare AZ-900's cheerful concept questions with ACE's operational scenarios and conclude "Google's exams are harder", you have compared the wrong pair.
A sensible plan on either side: take the fundamentals-level exam only if you need the confidence or your employer values it, and otherwise start at the first technical rung — AZ-104 or Associate Cloud Engineer — since neither vendor imposes prerequisites at that level.

Two realistic scenarios show the framework working. A systems administrator at a UK council that runs Microsoft 365 and is migrating file servers to the cloud should not agonise: AZ-104 converts existing Windows and Entra ID knowledge into a certified cloud role on the platform their employer already bought. Meanwhile, an analyst at a retail company whose warehouse runs on BigQuery has the opposite answer: the Associate Data Practitioner or Professional Data Engineer track certifies skills their employer is actively paying for, and the Azure equivalent would certify a platform they never touch.
On that last point, timed practice is the cheapest insurance either way: a full-length, timed run through AZ-104 practice questions or Professional Cloud Architect practice questions will show you which domains need another pass before you spend real money on a booking — treat the results as a weak-domain map, not a script to memorise.
Yes, and at senior levels it is increasingly common, since larger organisations run more than one cloud. But sequence matters: certify deeply on your primary platform first (for example AZ-104 → AZ-305, or ACE → Professional Cloud Architect) before adding the second provider. Two fundamentals-level badges impress nobody; one deep track plus a second-platform associate reads as genuine multi-cloud capability.
Usually only as a second string. Certifications convert to interviews where demand exists; if your local or remote job market barely mentions GCP, an Azure credential will open more doors, and you can add Google Cloud later if a specific role calls for it.
No, and the difference is a genuine planning factor. Azure fundamentals never expire; Azure role-based certifications renew annually, free and open book. Google Cloud Foundational and Associate certifications last three years and Professional certifications only two, with paid renewal exams or a course-based path that extends validity by just one year.
Microsoft tells you the passing bar (700 out of 1,000, scaled) but not the question count; Google tells you the question range (typically 50–60) but publishes no score at all, only pass/fail. If ambiguity about your margin bothers you, neither is fully transparent — which is exactly why timed practice runs matter more than the format difference.
If you strip this decision to one sentence: Azure certifies you for the cloud that enterprises default to; Google Cloud certifies you for the cloud that data teams choose. Pick the track whose employers you can name — the specific companies, in your market, whose job adverts you could apply to within a year — and start at the first technical rung rather than collecting fundamentals badges. If you genuinely cannot name employers on either side yet, spend one week searching adverts before you spend three months studying; the market's answer is better than any article's.
