Read naively, that ends the conversation — certify where the jobs are. Read carefully, it starts a more interesting one: AWS's share has drifted down from around 32% in 2021 while Google's has grown, Google Cloud engineers are scarcer in the hiring pool, and the highest verified certification salary figure in this comparison belongs to a Google credential, not an AWS one.

Short answer: AWS is the better default certification path for most people because its larger market share translates into more job adverts, more employers and more transferable proof of skill. Google Cloud is the better path when your employer or target companies run on it, when you work in data- and ML-heavy environments where Google Cloud is often chosen, or when you want a scarcer credential in a smaller talent pool. Demand is where AWS builds its lead. The Synergy Q3 2025 figures — AWS 29%, Microsoft 20%, Google Cloud 13%, with the big three holding 63% of a $106.9 billion quarterly market — describe where workloads actually run, and workloads are what generate jobs. Every exam has a code and a published scaled passing score — 700 Foundational, 720 Associate, 750 Professional and Specialty on a 100–1000 scale.

Google Cloud (as of August 2026) runs three tiers totalling 13 active certifications: Foundational (Cloud Digital Leader and Generative AI Leader, $99), Associate (Cloud Engineer, Data Practitioner, Google Workspace Administrator, $125) and Professional (Cloud Architect, Data Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Security Engineer, Network Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Database Engineer, Developer, $200). Google Cloud exams have no codes at all and publish no passing scores — results are pass/fail only, provisional on screen and confirmed within 7–10 days.

Three structural observations worth acting on:

  • Neither provider has prerequisites for any exam. Experience levels are recommendations. You can sit AWS Solutions Architect Professional or Google Professional Cloud Architect directly, without the lower rungs.
  • AWS's ladder is wider at the top. Its Professional and Specialty tiers, plus role-specific Associates, let you signal a niche (DevOps, data engineering, ML engineering, security) at multiple depths. Google concentrates role specialisation in a single Professional tier.
  • AWS's portfolio churns more visibly. Factor 3: difficulty — what "harder" actually means here

Neither provider publishes pass rates, so any claim that one track has a higher failure rate is invented. What can be compared honestly is format, transparency and time pressure.

Question style

Both tracks are question-based with no hands-on labs. AWS exams are multiple choice and multiple response (its newest AI exams add ordering, matching and case-study question types, but the classic exams remain MCQ). Google's are multiple choice and multiple select, with one distinctive feature: the Professional Cloud Architect exam includes two case studies per sitting, drawn from a published pool of four and making up 20–30% of questions. AWS Associate exams give 65 questions in 130 minutes; its Professionals give 75 questions in 180 minutes. The defensible statement is this: both Professional tiers assume roughly 1+ year of hands-on platform experience against 3+ years in industry (Google's stated recommendation) or 2+ years designing on AWS (Amazon's), and passing either without real platform time is a poor bet. Difficulty tracks your experience far more than your provider choice.

Factor 4: cost, validity and the renewal treadmill

Sticker prices sit close together: Google is slightly cheaper at every tier ($99/$125/$200 versus AWS's $100/$150/$300 for Foundational/Associate/Professional-or-Specialty), with the gap largest at the top. Both vary by region or tax. The bigger long-term difference is validity:

  • AWS: every certification lasts 3 years. Renewal options are generous — retake, or pass a higher exam that covers it (Solutions Architect Professional renews the Associate and Cloud Practitioner; DevOps Professional renews Developer and CloudOps). Active holders get a 50% discount voucher for their next exam, and Cloud Practitioner can even be renewed free through AWS's Cloud Quest recertification path (check current availability on AWS's recertification page).   • Google Cloud: Foundational and Associate certs last 3 years, but Professional certs last only 2. Miss your expiry by more than 30 days and you are back to the full exam at full price.

Over a decade, an AWS Professional cert means roughly three renewal events; a Google Professional cert means five. If you plan to hold multiple certifications, that arithmetic deserves a place in your decision.

Certifications reward alignment with the platform you touch daily, because hands-on familiarity is what gets you through Associate-and-above exams. So invert the question: which console are you in? A realistic pattern from each side —

  • A systems administrator whose company is migrating onto AWS has no real decision to make: AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate maps directly to the work, and the market's largest platform is now also their platform.
  • A data analyst at a company standardising on BigQuery is in Google's heartland. The Associate Data Practitioner, then the Professional Data Engineer, follow the actual work — and translate directly into the tooling their employer hires for.

If you have no employer constraint at all — a student or a career changer choosing in the abstract — AWS's market share makes it the lower-risk opening bet, and skills transfer well enough that a later Google cert costs less effort than the first cloud cert did. The concepts (identity, networking, storage tiers, managed compute) rhyme across providers; only the service names and design idioms change.

A decision framework you can apply in five minutes

Work through these in order; stop at the first decisive answer.

  1. Does your current employer run one of them? Certify there. Internal mobility and immediate applicability beat abstract market share.
  2. Do your target job adverts name a platform? Search the roles you actually want in your actual city or remote market. Count mentions. Certify with the majority.
  3. Is your career data- or ML-shaped? Google Cloud's gravity in analytics and machine learning makes its track — Associate Data Practitioner, Professional Data Engineer, Professional Machine Learning Engineer — a coherent story.
