A quiet detail trips up a lot of people researching this comparison: the two exams sit at different tiers of their providers' ladders. AWS Certified Security – Specialty is a Specialty-tier exam priced at $300, while Google's Professional Cloud Security Engineer is a Professional-tier exam at $200 — and the Google credential expires a full year sooner. If you are weighing the two purely as "the security cert for each cloud", those structural differences matter as much as the content.
Short answer: choose the AWS Certified Security – Specialty (SCS-C03) if your employer or target roles run primarily on Amazon Web Services, and the Professional Cloud Security Engineer if they run on Google Cloud. Where you genuinely work across both, AWS's larger market footprint makes its security credential the safer default — but Google's shorter, cheaper exam and its two-year renewal cycle change the total-cost calculation. Neither is universally "better"; they certify security depth on different platforms.

The AWS Certified Security – Specialty is Amazon Web Services' dedicated security credential. The current version as of August 2026 is SCS-C03, which replaced SCS-C02 (available until 1 December 2025). The refresh added generative AI and machine-learning security coverage and restructured the domains, with dedicated sections for detection and incident response. If you find prep material still labelled SCS-C02, treat it with caution — the blueprint has moved on.
The Professional Cloud Security Engineer is Google Cloud's security credential. Google Cloud exams carry no exam codes at all, so the certification is referred to by name only. Its published domains cover configuring access, securing communications and boundary protection, data protection, managing security operations, and supporting compliance.
Both are platform-specific. Passing either says "this person can secure workloads on this cloud", not "this person is a security generalist". That distinction is worth keeping in mind if you are early in a security career: vendor-neutral entry credentials serve a different purpose, and neither of these exams is an entry point.

AWS gives you 65 questions in 170 minutes — nearly three hours, and among the longest sittings in the AWS portfolio. Google gives you 50–60 questions in 2 hours. Neither exam includes hands-on labs; both are question-based and proctored through Pearson VUE, online or at a test centre.
This is a genuine philosophical difference. AWS publishes its scaled passing score — 750 on a 100–1000 scale for Specialty exams — so you know exactly where the bar sits, even though the scaled score is not a simple percentage of questions answered correctly. Google publishes no passing score for any of its exams: you receive a provisional pass/fail on screen, confirmed within 7 to 10 days, with no numeric score report. Candidates who like to gauge their margin will find Google's approach opaque; there is no way to know how close you came.
Neither provider imposes formal prerequisites — you can book either exam tomorrow. AWS describes the Security Specialty as expecting specialty-level depth. Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience including at least a year working on Google Cloud. In practice both exams assume you have secured real workloads: identity and access design, network boundaries, encryption and key management, logging and incident response are core territory on each platform. Neither provider publishes pass rates, so ignore any "X% of candidates fail" claims you see elsewhere.
Sticker price favours Google: $200 versus $300. But validity runs the other way, and it compounds.
An AWS Specialty certification is valid for 3 years, and Specialty exams renew only by retaking the current specialty exam. The Professional Cloud Security Engineer is valid for only 2 years — Google's Professional-tier certs all carry the shorter cycle, a detail many candidates miss because Foundational and Associate Google certs last three years. Google has introduced shorter, cheaper renewal exams for some certifications, but the confirmed renewal-exam pricing applies to certs such as the Professional Cloud Architect; for the Security Engineer, Google directs holders to its Renewal FAQ, so check the current renewal options there before budgeting.
Two more cost details tilt things back toward AWS for people already in its ecosystem: active AWS certification holders receive a 50% discount voucher for their next AWS exam, and both providers' prices vary by country or tax treatment, so confirm the fee at registration.
Over a six-year horizon, then, the AWS credential means roughly two full-price sittings (less any voucher discount) while the Google credential means three renewal events. The "cheaper" exam is not automatically the cheaper certification.
Market context matters because a security certification only pays off where the platform is deployed. Synergy Research Group's figures for Q3 2025 put AWS at 29% of the cloud infrastructure services market, Microsoft at 20% and Google Cloud at 13%. More AWS estates means more AWS security roles, and job adverts for cloud security engineers name AWS tooling more often simply because more companies run on it.
That does not make the Google credential a weak signal — the reverse, in some settings. Google Cloud security engineers are scarcer than AWS ones, and organisations that have committed to Google Cloud (or run it alongside AWS) often struggle to find people who genuinely know its security model rather than translating AWS habits across. Skillsoft's 2025 top-paying certifications list reports an average of about $190,000 for Google's Professional Cloud Architect holders in the US, which suggests the Google Professional tier is taken seriously by employers — though no equivalent verified figure exists for the Security Engineer specifically, and pay always varies by location, experience and role. Skillsoft's annual report has also regularly ranked AWS security credentials among the higher payers; check skillsoft.com for current figures rather than relying on quoted numbers.
A realistic scenario: a security analyst at a company migrating onto AWS, holding a vendor-neutral security cert and 18 months of cloud exposure, gets clearly more value from SCS-C03 than from the Google exam — it maps to the work in front of them. The same analyst at a data-heavy company standardising on BigQuery and Google Cloud should flip that choice without hesitation.
Whichever you choose, anchor your study to the official exam guide — AWS's SCS-C03 guide or Google's Professional Cloud Security Engineer guide — because both exams were refreshed recently (AWS adding generative-AI security coverage; Google Cloud pages noting updates for product rebranding) and older third-party material lags behind. Interpret the objectives through a practitioner's lens: the domains that deserve the most time are the ones where each platform is most distinctive — the platform's identity model, its encryption and key-management services, and its logging and detection tooling — because that is where cross-cloud intuition most often gives wrong answers.
