Profile 2: Windows, Active Directory or Microsoft 365 experience

Recommendation: Azure, going straight to AZ-104.

You hold a compounding advantage that would be wasteful to abandon: Azure's associate syllabus — identity and governance through Entra ID, virtual networking that bridges on-premises estates, storage and compute migration — is your existing world with cloud tooling on top. Skip AZ-900 unless your employer wants it (it never expires, but it also proves little for an experienced professional) and go directly to Azure Administrator Associate AZ-104, which has no prerequisites. The employers who value your Windows background — enterprises, councils, hospitals, banks — are disproportionately the ones running Azure. This is the rare case where the platform choice is close to made for you.

Profile 3: Developer or Linux engineer heading for cloud-native work

Recommendation: AWS, straight to Solutions Architect – Associate; Google Cloud as a defensible alternative if your target companies are GCP shops.

Start-ups, product companies and consultancies — the natural employers for this profile — standardised on AWS early, and the AWS Solutions Architect – Associate is the credential their job adverts name. You do not need Cloud Practitioner first; AWS has no prerequisites and your engineering background covers the conceptual ground.
