Correct answer: Two ways, each developed. For example: at Mass Catholics reaffirm belief in the Trinity by reciting the Nicene Creed; on entering a church Catholics cross themselves using the Trinitarian formula, as a reminder of Father, Son and Holy Spirit; Catholics are baptised 'In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit' as the priest pours water over the head.
Explanation

Question #3
Question 1: Catholic Beliefs Explain two reasons why it is important that humans are created in the image of God. In your answer you must refer to a source of wisdom and authority.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two reasons, developed, plus a source. For example: it allows humans a unique relationship with God that they were created for (Genesis 1:27 says only humanity was made in his image); it gives all humans dignity as they can share God's life (Catechism 356: 'only man is able to know and love his creator… this is the fundamental reason for his dignity'); the divine image is in every human so all human life is sacred (Genesis 5:1).
Explanation
One mark for each reason, with further marks for developing each reason, up to four marks. One further mark for a relevant source of wisdom or authority. Any other valid response is accepted. Do not credit a repeated reason or development, development that does not relate to both the reason and the question, or a source that does not relate to the reason given.

Question #4
Question 1: Catholic Beliefs In this question, 3 of the marks awarded will be for your spelling, punctuation and grammar and your use of specialist terminology. "Jesus is fully God." Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against. In your response you should: • refer to Catholic teachings • reach a justified conclusion.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: A balanced evaluation reaching a justified conclusion. For: John 1:14 'The Word became flesh' shows Jesus is God incarnate; the Virgin Birth shows he is Son of God (Luke 1:36); Jesus is one person of the Trinity, the Son made flesh. Against: Jesus limited himself as a human and was tempted, wept, got angry and felt pain; his suffering and death on the cross were real, and through them the Paschal Mystery brought salvation; the Church teaches he is both fully human and fully divine ('He became truly man while remaining truly God', Catechism 464).
Explanation
Worth 15 marks: 12 for evaluation and 3 for spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology. Any other valid response is accepted. Answers that do not consider different viewpoints within the religious tradition or non-religious viewpoints cannot get beyond Level 2. Level 1 (1–3): superficial connections, generic arguments, conclusion not justified. Level 2 (4–6): limited understanding, an attempt to appraise evidence, conclusion not fully justified. Level 3 (7–9): coherent reasoning considering different viewpoints, accurate understanding, partially justified conclusion. Level 4 (10–12): critical, sustained, accurate and thorough reasoning, full range of elements, fully justified conclusion. SPaG: 1 mark for reasonable accuracy and a limited range of specialist terms; 2 marks for considerable accuracy and a good range; 3 marks for consistent accuracy and a wide range.

Question #5
Outline three Catholic teachings about divorce.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Any three: Pope Francis taught divorce harms the family; 'The man who hates and divorces his wife... does violence to the one he should protect' (Malachi 2:16); the Catechism teaches marriage cannot be dissolved by any human power; 'Divorce is a grave offence against the natural law' (Catechism 2384); the Church tolerates civil divorce if it is needed to protect children.
Explanation
One mark for each point identified, up to three marks. Accept any other valid response.

Question #6
Explain two reasons why Catholics are against gender discrimination.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two reasons, each developed: (1) In Genesis men and women were both created equally in the image of God, so they should have equal roles and rights in society. (2) The Catechism teaches gender discrimination is sinful, and everyone should work for social justice. (Also: Pope John Paul II taught men and women are complementary partners, so differences should not be used as a reason to discriminate.)
Explanation
One mark for each reason and one further mark for developing each, up to four marks. A list earns a maximum of one mark. Do not credit a repeated reason or development, or a development that does not relate to both the reason and the question. Accept any other valid response.

Question #7
Explain two ways Catholics respond to the different types of families found in society today. In your answer you must refer to a source of wisdom and authority.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two ways, developed, plus a source. Examples: Single parent families may be financially supported by the local parish as they have only one income (Pope John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio 77, urged pastoral care). The Church blesses nuclear/extended families as they can raise children in the faith, being the 'domestic church' (Catechism 1666). Same-sex families are not in keeping with God's plan for marriage, but every person should be respected; Pope Francis in Joy of Love: 'every sign of unjust discrimination is to be carefully avoided'.
Explanation
One mark for each way and further marks for developing each, up to four marks. One further mark for a relevant source of wisdom or authority. Do not credit a repeated way or development, a development not related to both the way and the question, or a source that does not relate to the way given. Accept any other valid response.

Question #8
"Sex outside of marriage is always wrong." Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against. In your response you should: • refer to Catholic teachings • refer to non-religious points of view • reach a justified conclusion.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Extended evaluation reaching a justified judgement. For: marriage is exclusive and vows promise faithfulness to God; sex is for married couples and for having children, so premarital sex goes against Church teaching; adultery is condemned in the Bible, the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. Against: non-religious people may see it as an individual choice if consensual and within moral limits; some Christians accept committed cohabiting couples as a step towards marriage; it is not illegal in the UK and attitudes have changed.
Explanation
12 marks, levelled. Level 1 (1–3): superficial connections, generic arguments, conclusion not justified. Level 2 (4–6): many elements, limited understanding, attempt to appraise evidence, conclusion not fully justified. Level 3 (7–9): coherent reasoning considering different viewpoints, accurate understanding, partially justified conclusion. Level 4 (10–12): critical, sustained, thorough understanding covering the full range of elements, fully justified conclusion. Responses that do not consider different religious viewpoints or non-religious viewpoints cannot get above Level 2. Accept any other valid response.

Explanation
One mark for each reason and one further mark for developing each, up to four marks. A list earns a maximum of one mark. Do not credit a repeated reason or development, or a development that does not relate to both the reason and the question. Accept any other valid response.
