Question #2
Question 1: Catholic Beliefs Explain two ways belief in the Trinity is shown in Catholic worship.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two ways, each developed. E.g. at Mass Catholics reaffirm belief in the Trinity by reciting the Nicene Creed; on entering a church Catholics cross themselves as a reminder of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit; in baptism the priest pours water over the baby's head saying 'in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit'.
Explanation
One mark for each way and one mark for development of each way, up to four marks. Any other valid response is accepted. Lists score a maximum of one mark. A repeated way, or a development that does not relate both to the way given and to the question, earns no mark.

Question #3
Question 1: Catholic Beliefs Explain two reasons why it is important that humans are created in the image of God. In your answer you must refer to a source of wisdom and authority.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two reasons, developed, plus a source. E.g. it allows humans a unique relationship with God that they were specifically created for (Genesis 1:27, only humanity is made in his image); it gives all humans dignity as they can share God's life (Catechism 356: 'only man is able to know and love his creator… this is the fundamental reason for his dignity'); the divine image is in every human so all human life is sacred (Genesis 5:1, made in his likeness).
Explanation
One mark for each reason or belief, with further marks for development of each, up to four marks. One further mark for any relevant source of wisdom or authority. Any other valid response is accepted. A repeated reason, a development not linked to the reason and the question, or a source unrelated to the reason given earns no mark.

Question #4
Question 1: Catholic Beliefs "Jesus is fully God." Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against. In your response you should: • refer to Catholic teachings • reach a justified conclusion. (In this question, 3 of the marks awarded will be for your spelling, punctuation and grammar and your use of specialist terminology.)
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Evaluation with a justified conclusion. For: John 1:14 'The Word became flesh' shows Jesus is God incarnate; the virgin birth shows he is the Son of God (Luke 1:35-36); Jesus is the Son, one person of the Trinity. Against: Jesus limited himself to human condition (tempted, wept, angry, felt pain); his real suffering and death on the cross was a human act bringing salvation in the Paschal Mystery; he was both fully human and fully divine (CCC 464: 'He became truly man while remaining truly God').
Explanation
15 marks: 12 for AO2 and 3 for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Answers must be underpinned by accurate knowledge of religion and belief. Without different viewpoints within the religious tradition or non-religious viewpoints, as instructed, the answer cannot go beyond Level 2. Level 1 (1–3): superficial connections, generic arguments, conclusion not justified. Level 2 (4–6): limited understanding, an attempt to appraise evidence, conclusion not fully justified. Level 3 (7–9): coherent chains of reasoning considering different viewpoints, accurate understanding, partially justified conclusion. Level 4 (10–12): critical, sustained and thorough reasoning across the full range of elements, comprehensive appraisal, fully justified conclusion. SPaG: 1 mark threshold, 2 marks intermediate (considerable accuracy, a good range of specialist terms), 3 marks high (consistent accuracy, a wide range of specialist terms).

Question #5
Question 2: Marriage and the Family Outline three Catholic teachings about divorce.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Any three: Pope Francis taught that divorce harms the family; 'The man who hates and divorces his wife... does violence to the one he should protect' (Malachi 2:16); the Catechism teaches marriage cannot be dissolved by any human power; 'Divorce is a grave offence against the natural law' (Catechism 2384); the Church tolerates a civil divorce if it is to protect children.
Explanation
One mark for each point identified, up to three marks. Accept any other valid response.

Question #6
Explain two reasons why Catholics are against gender discrimination.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two reasons, each developed. E.g. In Genesis men and women were created equally in the image of God, so they should have equal roles and rights in society. The Catechism teaches gender discrimination is sinful, and everyone should work for social justice. Pope John Paul II taught men and women are complementary partners, so differences should be celebrated and not used to discriminate.
Explanation
One mark for a reason and a second mark for developing it, up to four marks. Accept any other valid response. Lists earn a maximum of one mark. A repeated reason or development earns nothing. A development must relate both to the reason and to the question.

Question #7
Explain two ways Catholics respond to the different types of families found in society today. In your answer you must refer to a source of wisdom and authority.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two ways Catholics respond to different family types, developed, plus one source of wisdom or authority. E.g. Single parent families may be supported financially by the parish as they have one income (Pope John Paul II said pastoral care should be offered, Familiaris Consortio 77). The Church blesses nuclear/extended families as they can raise children in the faith, since the family is the 'domestic church' (Catechism 1666). Same-sex families are not in keeping with God's plan for marriage, but every person should be respected; Pope Francis in the Joy of Love: 'every sign of unjust discrimination is to be carefully avoided'.
Explanation
One mark for each way, with further marks for developing each way, up to four marks. One further mark for a relevant source of wisdom or authority. Accept any other valid response. A repeated way or development earns nothing. A development must relate to both the way and the question. The source must relate to the way given.

Question #8
"Sex outside of marriage is always wrong." Evaluate this statement considering arguments for and against. In your response you should: • refer to Catholic teachings • refer to non-religious points of view • reach a justified conclusion.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Evaluation with a justified conclusion. For: marriage is exclusive and the vows promise faithfulness to each other before God. Sex is for married couples and open to children, and premarital sex goes against Church teaching. Adultery is condemned in the Bible, in the Ten Commandments, and by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Against: non-religious people may see it as an individual choice if it is consensual and within moral limits. Some Christians accept sex in a committed cohabiting couple as a step towards marriage. It is not illegal in the UK and attitudes have changed.
Explanation
12 marks, marked by levels. Level 1 (1–3): superficial links, generic judgements and an unjustified conclusion. Level 2 (4–6): many elements covered superficially, with limited understanding and a conclusion not fully justified. Level 3 (7–9): coherent reasoning that considers different viewpoints, accurate understanding, and a partially justified conclusion. Level 4 (10–12): critical, sustained and thorough reasoning that covers the full range of elements, with a fully justified conclusion. Candidates who do not consider different viewpoints within the religious tradition or non-religious viewpoints cannot get above Level 2. Accept any other valid response.

Type your answer, then reveal.

Explanation
