Question #5
Mario is a teacher who works at a primary school. His new class of pupils are struggling with their physical development. Explain, using Daniel Willingham’s learning theory, one way Mario could support his pupils’ physical development.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Willingham's theory says children need to practise movement skills repeatedly to make them automatic. Mario could have pupils repeatedly do activities such as cutting with scissors, giving corrective feedback.
Explanation
One mark for accurate understanding of Willingham's learning theory (e.g. repeated practice makes skills automatic). One mark for applying it to the scenario (e.g. repeated cutting with scissors with corrective feedback). Accept any other appropriate response.

Question #6
Mario is a teacher who works at a primary school. His new class of pupils are struggling with their physical development. Explain one strength and one weakness of using Daniel Willingham’s learning theory with Mario’s pupils. Strength: Weakness:
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Strength: the theory has experimental support, so practising skills in Mario's class could help. For example, Ericsson, Krampe and Tesch-Römer (1993) found the best violinists did more practice, which supports using practice for cutting skills. Weakness: the theory does not account for individual differences in pupils' physical development. Some pupils may not have their needs met by universal strategies and could need more individualised support.
Explanation
One mark for each identified strength or weakness (maximum 2). One mark for each justification linked to the strength or weakness identified (maximum 2). Accept any other appropriate response.

Question #7
Janet is a psychologist investigating cognitive development. She visits a local primary school and uses a task to assess the stages of cognitive development of the pupils at the school. Firstly, sweets were arranged in Line A. • Line A: Ten sweets in a row with 1cm between each of them. Then, later the sweets were arranged in Line B. • Line B: The same 10 sweets in a row but with 2cm between each of them. Danielle says there are 10 sweets in line A, but she says there are 20 sweets in line B. Explain what stage of cognitive development Danielle is in according to her response. You should refer to a theory in your answer.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Pre-operational stage (Piaget). Children in the concrete operational stage can conserve and would say both lines have the same number of sweets. Danielle says the numbers differ, so she cannot conserve yet.
Explanation
One mark for accurate understanding of Piaget's theory of cognitive development (e.g. conservation shows the concrete operational stage). One mark for applying it to the scenario (Danielle cannot conserve, so she is pre-operational). Accept any other appropriate response.

Question #8
Janet is a psychologist investigating cognitive development. She visits a local primary school and uses a task to assess the stages of cognitive development of the pupils at the school. Firstly, sweets were arranged in Line A. • Line A: Ten sweets in a row with 1cm between each of them. Then, later the sweets were arranged in Line B. • Line B: The same 10 sweets in a row but with 2cm between each of them. Danielle says there are 10 sweets in line A, but she says there are 20 sweets in line B. Janet collects data on how children at Danielle’s school perform in the task. She splits the children by age (in years), from 5 to 11 years old, with 50 children in each age group. Their performance is shown in Figure 1. Bar chart to show the number of children aged 5–11 years who gave the correct answer to the cognitive tasks Explain two conclusions you could make from Figure 1 about the cognitive development of the children at Danielle’s school. Conclusion one: Conclusion two:

Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Nearly all 8–11 year olds were in the concrete operational stage: all aged 9–11 and 45/50 aged 8 got it correct, so could conserve. Children aged 5–6 got only 15 out of a possible 100 correct, so the majority were still pre-operational and had not developed conservation.
Explanation
One mark for each conclusion (maximum 2). One mark for each justification through analysis or interpretation of the data (maximum 2). Accept any other appropriate response.
