Question #5
Explain how geomorphic processes form oxbow lakes. You may use a diagram.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Erosion is greater on the outside of meander bends and deposition on the inside. The meander neck narrows through erosion. In a flood the river takes the easiest, shortest course and cuts through the neck (a cut-off). Reduced river energy leads to deposition, which seals off the old meander and leaves an oxbow lake.
Explanation
Four marks, one for each valid explanation of how geomorphic processes form an oxbow lake. Development of a point earns a further mark. Specific process mechanisms (eg explaining abrasion) can be credited. A diagram is not needed, but annotations are credited, without double credit for the same point in text. Full marks need to show how erosion/deposition form the lake. Full marks are possible from one well-developed explanation.

Question #6
CASE STUDY – a UK coastal landscape Name of coastal landscape in the UK ____ Explain the impact of geology on your chosen coastal landscape.
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: A named UK coastal landscape, with place-specific explanation of how geology affects it. Eg Swanage, Dorset: layers of chalk and clay lie side by side. Less resistant clay is eroded faster by processes such as abrasion, forming a bay (Swanage Bay). More resistant chalk is eroded more slowly by hydraulic action, forming a headland (The Foreland).
Explanation
Six marks, levelled (AO1 knowledge of geology, AO2 understanding of its impact). Level 3 (5-6): thorough knowledge and understanding with well-developed ideas on the impact of geology, and place-specific detail. The amount of place-specific detail decides the mark within the level. Level 2 (3-4): reasonable knowledge and understanding with developed ideas. Developed ideas without place-specific detail reach the bottom of the level only. Level 1 (1-2): basic knowledge and simple ideas (eg hard rock forms headlands, soft rock forms bays). A named example alone gets no place-specific credit. 0: no creditable response. Any landform or feature (headlands, bays, stacks, arches, spits, beaches, estuaries, buildings, coastal management) can be used if the link to geology is clear. Weak/resistant rock is not required. River landscape examples can reach a maximum of 3 marks.

Question #7
Study the table below. It contains unemployment data for the UK in 2019. | Country | Percentage unemployment (2019) | | England | 4.0% | | Northern Ireland | 2.9% | | Scotland | 3.2% | | Wales | 4.5% | Calculate the mean unemployment rate for the UK. You must show your working. ____ %
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: 3.65% (3.7% accepted)
Explanation
One mark for working showing any stage of the calculation, eg adding to get 14.6 or 14.6 ÷ 4. One mark for the correct answer 3.65. Accept 3.7.

Question #8
Define the term ‘immigration’.

Question #9
Explain two economic impacts of immigration. 1 ____ 2 ____
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two economic impacts, each developed. Eg: migrants spend disposable income in the UK, boosting the national economy. Migrants fill skills gaps/NHS vacancies. Greater demand for housing raises prices/rents or creates jobs. Migrants open shops on high streets, creating jobs and services. Migrants in work pay taxes to the government. More people claiming benefits/using public services can lead to tax increases or higher public spending.
Explanation
Two marks for identifying two economic impacts and two marks for developing them (one each). Impacts on the source country are also valid.

Question #10
CASE STUDY – one major city in the UK Name of major UK city ____ Explain two ways in which your chosen city is connected to other places, such as its region, the country or the wider world. 1 ____ 2 ____
Type your answer, then reveal.
Correct answer: Two place-specific connections of the named city, each explained. Eg: an international airport carries tourists, business people and goods around the world. A university attracts students from the region, UK and world. Main roads link it to commuter settlements and other UK cities. Cultural centre (theatres, sports teams) draws visitors from the region. Company headquarters trade across the UK and globally.
Explanation
Two marks for identifying two connections and two marks for explaining them (one each). Responses may use one or more scales (region, country, world). Full marks need a sense of place.
