You cannot read your way past a performance-based question. That is the whole point of the format: instead of asking which command lists open ports, the exam drops you into a simulated terminal or console and watches whether you can produce the result. If your preparation has been books, videos and multiple-choice drills, the first PBQ you ever attempt should not be on exam day.
Short answer: prepare for performance-based questions (PBQs) by doing the exam objectives as tasks, not topics — build a small lab, convert each relevant objective into a repeatable exercise, drill those exercises until they are quick and clean, and learn a pacing rule for the exam itself, because PBQs consume far more time than ordinary items.
A performance-based question is an interactive item that simulates a working environment — a command-line window, a network diagram you configure, a firewall rule table, a log file to analyse — and asks you to complete a task in it. CompTIA is the best-known user of the format: both CompTIA A+ exams (Core 1, 220-1201, and Core 2, 220-1202) and CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) mix multiple-choice items with performance-based questions, within a maximum of 90 questions and 90 minutes per exam. Other programmes use their own variants; Microsoft, for instance, says its exams "may have interactive components". Check the current exam page for your certification before assuming a format — question types are revised with each exam version.

This article is about true simulations: items where you configure, type, analyse or troubleshoot.
Candidates consistently report PBQs as the most intimidating part of exams like Security+. Three reasons, all addressable:
None of these is about difficulty of content. A PBQ typically tests the same objective a multiple-choice item would — it just refuses to accept familiarity as a substitute for ability.
Download the current exam objectives from the provider. Highlight every objective whose verb implies action — configure, install, troubleshoot, analyse, implement, connect. These are the PBQ candidates. Objectives phrased as compare, explain, summarise are unlikely simulation material. For Security+ SY0-701, for example, your highlighted list becomes your lab syllabus.
You do not need enterprise kit. A free hypervisor and two or three virtual machines cover most A+ and Security+ hands-on ground: a Windows client, a Linux machine, and something to network them. Add the specific tools your objectives name. The test of a good lab is friction: if starting it takes more than two minutes, you will stop using it, so keep snapshots ready and exercises small.
For each verb objective, write a one-line task card: "Given a running Linux VM, identify which service is listening on port 22 and stop it." "Configure the Windows firewall to block outbound traffic to a specific address." A good card names a start state, a goal, and nothing else — exactly the shape of a PBQ. Aim for a deck of 30–60 cards across your weak domains.
First pass: complete each task with documentation open. Second pass: from memory. Third pass: from memory with a timer. Fluency — doing the task quickly and cleanly without reference — is the state PBQs actually test, and it only comes from repetition spaced over days, not from one long lab weekend. Space the repetitions; distributed practice reliably beats massed practice for retention (Cepeda et al., 2006).
Lab skill and simulation skill overlap but are not identical: simulations are constrained, sometimes clunky, and only accept the interactions their builder anticipated. In the final weeks, practise on simulated PBQ-style items so the interface itself holds no surprises. For a candidate finishing Security+ content with four weeks left: week one, extract verb objectives and build the lab (three short sessions). Weeks two and three, run the task-card deck — five cards per session, five sessions per week, repeating misses two days later. Week four, two full timed practice sittings with simulations included, plus targeted redrilling of whatever the sittings expose. A helpdesk analyst studying evenings can fit this in under an hour a day — the schedule's power is repetition and spacing, not marathon sessions.
Providers generally do not publish a fixed count, and it can vary between sittings. CompTIA states its exams contain a maximum of 90 questions mixing multiple-choice and performance-based items; plan your pacing around "a handful of expensive items" rather than a precise number.
Providers rarely publish item-level scoring rules, so do not assume a botched sub-task voids the whole item — complete every part you can and attempt the rest. What is verifiably true for CompTIA is that overall results use a scaled score, not a raw percentage.
Because scoring is scaled and item weights are unpublished, deliberately sacrificing the format is a gamble against unknown odds. Budgeted attempts beat abandonment: even partial credit on two simulations may be the margin between scores just below and just above the pass line.
Yes — online delivery through proctored platforms such as Pearson VUE OnVUE presents the same exam content as a test centre. Note the environment rules for online sittings (system test beforehand, a clear desk, a room scan on CompTIA exams), which are worth rehearsing separately.
Performance-based questions are the closest a certification exam gets to the job itself, which is precisely why employers value the credentials that use them — and why they cannot be crammed. Every hour in the lab does double duty: it prepares you for the PBQs and for the first week of the role the certification points at. Train tasks, not topics; budget your minutes; attempt everything. Candidates who arrive having done the objectives usually leave the simulation items feeling like the easiest part of the day.
