How to Answer Matching Questions on Certification Exams

Matching questions reward anchor-first elimination and precise terminology recall. Learn the pairing tactics and drills that make these items reliable marks.

Matching questions are the closest thing a certification exam offers to free marks — and the format where a single misplaced pairing quietly costs you two. Both halves of that sentence matter. Because a matching item tests recognition of pairings rather than construction of an answer, a well-drilled candidate can clear one in under a minute. But because the pairings often draw from one shared pool, one wrong match can force a second option out of its rightful place.

This article deals only with matching and pairing items: what the format tests, the anchor-first elimination method that makes it reliable, and the terminology drills that make it fast. Why exams still use matching items

A matching question presents two lists — say, protocols and their functions, or attack types and their descriptions — and asks you to pair them. IT certification bodies favour the format for exactly one job: checking terminology and association knowledge efficiently. One matching item can verify five or six facts that would otherwise need five or six multiple-choice questions.

That tells you what the format rewards. Matching items rarely test judgement or scenario analysis; they test whether the vocabulary of the exam objectives is precisely stored — not "TLS is something to do with encryption" but "TLS provides encrypted transport between endpoints, and that is different from what IPsec, SSH and HTTPS entries in the same list would say". On CompTIA exams, which mix multiple-choice, drag-and-drop and performance-based formats within a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes (per CompTIA's current A+ exam pages for 220-1201 and 220-1202), pairing-style content typically appears through those interactive item types; other programmes present matching as its own item. The anchor-first method

Working a matching item in list order — top item first, straight down — is the natural approach and the wrong one. Errors cascade: a shaky first pairing consumes an option that a later, more certain pairing needed. Work by confidence instead.

Step 1: Scan both lists completely before pairing anything

Thirty seconds of reading buys you the shape of the item. Note whether the lists are equal in length, and check the instructions for the two rule variations that change everything: whether options may be used more than once, and whether some options are unused distractors. An unequal list is not a mistake — it is the exam telling you distractors are present.

Step 2: Place your anchors

An anchor is a pairing you would defend to a colleague without hesitation. Place every anchor first, regardless of where it sits in the list. Each anchor does double duty: it earns its own credit and, in the common case where options are used once, it removes a candidate from every remaining decision.

Step 3: Eliminate into the gaps

Now take the remaining unmatched terms one at a time, but flip the question. Instead of "what does this term match?", ask "which of the remaining options could this term not be?" Process of elimination is stronger in matching than anywhere else, because the option pool shrinks with every placement. Three anchors into a six-pair item, you are choosing among three options — often only one of which is even the right category of thing.

Step 4: Resolve the final pair by definition, not vibe

The last one or two pairings are where marks are lost, because they are precisely the associations you knew least well. Slow down and test the candidate pairing against the strict definition: does this description fit this term exactly, or merely nearby? Terms that survive to the end of your elimination are usually the exam's chosen near-neighbours — the two protocols with overlapping jobs, the two attack types separated by one detail.

Step 5: Audit the whole set once

Read every completed pairing as a sentence — "X is/does Y" — and listen for the one that sounds wrong. If changing it would force a chain of other changes, trust your anchors and only move pairings you placed with low confidence.

Throughout, remember the universal rule of computer-based exams: complete the item. Providers that publish their scoring, such as AWS in its exam guides, are explicit that unanswered questions score as incorrect and guessing carries no penalty; no programme rewards a blank. An eliminated-down-to-two guess is strictly better than an empty pairing.

Terminology recall: the preparation that actually moves the needle

Strategy limits the damage; vocabulary wins the marks. Matching items collapse when your knowledge of terms is approximate, so preparation for this format is unapologetically about drilling precise associations.

Build pairs from the official objectives. Go through your exam's published objectives and extract everything that exists as a natural pairing: term–definition, protocol–function, tool–purpose, standard–scope. This list is your matching-question universe; the exam cannot pair what the blueprint does not contain.

Drill the pairs both directions. Being able to produce the definition from the term does not guarantee you can produce the term from the definition — and matching items ask both ways. Drill the confusable clusters hardest. Make a "commonly confused" list — the term pairs you have mixed up even once — and give it triple the review frequency. Matching questions are built from confusable clusters; your error log is a preview of the exam's distractor design.

Test yourself in exam-like conditions. Use practice items to find weak associations and return to the objectives to repair them — memorising specific question-and-answer pairings teaches you nothing the live exam will honour, since the wording will differ.

Three mistakes that cost pairings

  1. Answering in list order. Covered above, and worth repeating because it is the default behaviour of every unprepared candidate: order-of-appearance answering lets your weakest knowledge spend options your strongest knowledge needed.
  2. Ignoring the reuse rule. If options may be used more than once, elimination logic partially breaks — placing an anchor no longer removes that option from play. Candidates who assume one-use rules on a reusable item talk themselves out of correct repeat answers.
  3. Letting one pairing eat the clock. A matching item is one item. If two terms have you deadlocked after a couple of minutes, make the better-eliminated guess and move on; on a 90-minute exam the marginal minute is worth more elsewhere, and the deadlocked item may even be an unscored pilot — several programmes seed those (AWS confirms 15 unscored items per 65-question exam).

Turning matching items into banked marks

The candidates who fear matching questions are the ones with approximate vocabulary and no method; the candidates who welcome them arrive with drilled pairs and an anchor-first routine. Get your terminology list out of the official objectives early, drill it both directions with spaced self-testing, and rehearse the elimination sequence on realistic items until it runs on rails. Done properly, matching items stop being a format you handle and become the two minutes of the exam you look forward to.
