How to Handle Drag-and-Drop Certification Questions

Learn how drag-and-drop certification questions work, how they are typically scored, and a repeatable tactic for placing, ordering and checking your answers.

Two minutes into a CompTIA exam, a candidate meets a screen with six labelled tiles and four empty slots — and freezes, because nothing in their multiple-choice practice prepared them for the mechanics of the thing. Drag-and-drop items are not harder than other questions; they are simply a different task. You are no longer picking the best of four statements. You are constructing an answer — a sequence, a mapping or a categorisation — from parts, sometimes with more parts than places.

What a drag-and-drop question actually asks you to do

A drag-and-drop item gives you a set of movable options — text labels, commands, device names, step descriptions — and a set of targets to place them on. On certification exams the format usually appears in one of three shapes:

  1. Ordering (sequencing). Arrange steps into the correct order — a troubleshooting methodology, a boot sequence, an incident-response flow. Every tile is used, and position is everything.
  2. Matching-style placement. Drag each label onto the target it belongs to — a port number onto a protocol, a connector onto a device. (Where the exam presents this as a static pairing exercise rather than a dragging one, see our companion piece on matching questions on certification exams.)
  3. Categorisation. Sort a pool of items into two or more buckets — symmetric versus asymmetric encryption, for example — often with the possibility that a bucket takes more items than another.

CompTIA is the provider most associated with the format: its official exam pages for the current A+ exams (Core 1 = 220-1201, Core 2 = 220-1202, as of 2026) list drag-and-drop questions alongside multiple-choice and performance-based items, within a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes per exam. Microsoft's certification pages describe its exams as potentially including "interactive components", of which build-list and drag-style items are long-standing examples — check the exam sandbox and exam page for your specific test, since Microsoft does not publish a fixed item mix.

How are drag-and-drop questions scored?

Short answer: most major providers do not publish per-item scoring rules for drag-and-drop questions, so you should not assume either full-or-nothing scoring or partial credit. Plan as if every placement matters, because it might.

This is the question candidates most want answered — "do I get partial credit?" — and the honest position is that CompTIA, Microsoft and other vendors keep item-level scoring confidential. What is verifiable is how the overall score works: certification exams typically report a scaled score, not a percentage. CompTIA scores on a 100–900 scale (the current A+ Core 1 pass mark is 675 and Core 2 is 700, per CompTIA's exam pages), and scaling exists to equate exam forms of slightly different difficulty. So a single imperfect drag-and-drop item does not translate into a fixed, knowable point loss — which is one more reason to give it your best construction and move on rather than agonising.

Two scoring facts you can bank on:

  • A blank answer earns nothing. AWS states outright in its exam guides that unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and that there is no guessing penalty; other programmes rarely reward blanks either. Always place every tile you are required to place.
  • Your "felt" performance will not match your score. Some exams seed unscored pilot items among the live ones (AWS confirms 15 of its 65 questions are unscored). A drag-and-drop item that felt impossible may not have counted at all.

A five-step routine for any drag-and-drop item

Drag-and-drop rewards a fixed process far more than improvisation. Use the same sequence every time:

  1. Read the instruction line twice before touching anything. It tells you the rules of this particular item: whether every option is used, whether options can be used more than once, and whether order matters. Misreading "not all options will be used" is the single most common way to wreck an otherwise-known answer.
  2. Count tiles against targets. Six tiles and four slots means two distractors are sitting in the pool waiting for you. Equal counts usually (not always — re-read the instructions) mean everything gets placed.
  3. Anchor the endpoints first. In ordering questions, the first and last steps are almost always the ones you know most confidently — identify the problem before anything else; document findings at the end. Locking the ends shrinks a six-step ordering problem into a middle-arrangement problem.
  4. Place your certainties, then resolve the leftovers. Handle every placement you are sure of before touching the ambiguous tiles. Often the last two placements resolve themselves because only one arrangement remains plausible.
  5. Re-read the finished answer as a narrative. For sequences, say the flow silently in order: does step three actually require step two to have happened? A sequence that reads as a coherent story is usually right; one with a logical jump has two tiles swapped.

Budget realistically: a drag-and-drop item deserves more than the 45–60 seconds you would give a routine multiple-choice question, but it is not a simulation. If a 90-question, 90-minute CompTIA exam is your target, decide in advance that no drag-and-drop item gets more than two to three minutes, then flag and return if the exam interface allows it.

Why ordering questions punish rote memorisation

Here is the common mistake: candidates memorise a numbered list — the troubleshooting steps, the OSI layers, the incident-response phases — as a chant, then meet the same content as shuffled tiles with slightly reworded labels and fall apart. The chant stored the order, not the reasoning.

The fix is to study sequences by dependency rather than by number. For each step, be able to answer: what does this step need from the one before it, and what does it hand to the one after? A candidate who knows that you cannot establish a theory of probable cause before identifying the problem will reassemble the sequence from any wording. A candidate who only knows "step 2 comes after step 1" is hostage to the exact phrasing they memorised.

A practical drill: write each step of a process you must know on a separate index card, shuffle, and reassemble against the clock — then explain aloud why each card sits where it does. Doing this three or four times across a fortnight builds the reconstruction skill the exam actually tests, and it is a natural fit for retrieval-based revision (retrieval practice reliably beats rereading for retention, per Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 research on test-enhanced learning).

Practising the format before exam day

Reading about drag-and-drop is no substitute for meeting it under time pressure. Work interactive items into your final weeks of preparation:

  • Use provider-supplied demos where they exist — Microsoft, for instance, offers a free exam sandbox so you can experience its question interactions before test day.
  • Take timed practice exams that include mixed formats, and afterwards review not just what you got wrong but where your time went. If interactive items are eating four minutes each, that is a pacing problem to fix before, not during, the real sitting. Frequently asked questions

Do all certification exams use drag-and-drop questions?

No. CompTIA's current A+ exams list them explicitly; Microsoft describes interactive components without committing to a mix; AWS exam guides for Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect – Associate list only multiple-choice and multiple-response items. Check your provider's exam page or guide rather than assuming.

Can I skip a drag-and-drop question and come back?

It depends on the exam's navigation rules, which vary by programme and format. Where review is allowed, flagging a heavy item and returning is sound tactics; where it is not, apply the five-step routine and commit.

Should I still answer if I genuinely don't know the order?

Yes. Place your best reconstruction — anchored endpoints plus dependency logic — because a blank scores nothing, and on programmes that publish their rules (AWS, for one) there is no penalty for a wrong guess.

The mindset that beats the format

Treat every drag-and-drop item as a construction job with a checklist, not a memory test with a trapdoor.
