Two grounded points are worth more than an invented average:

The certification rarely raises the salary of the job you already have. Its financial effect usually arrives through mobility — qualifying you for cloud-titled roles that pay more than the helpdesk, on-premises or support roles people typically move from.
Certification plus demonstrable hands-on work beats certification alone. Employers pay for the combination. An AZ-104 badge attached to a CV that shows real deployments, migrations or automation work commands far more than the badge attached to theory.

The certification converts existing infrastructure knowledge into cloud-recognised currency, usually at the employer's expense, and positions them for the cloud roles their own migration is creating. For this profile the ROI is close to unarguable.

The helpdesk or support analyst climbing towards infrastructure. For someone with one to two years in IT support, AZ-104 is a stretch credential — the exam expects genuine hands-on familiarity — but it is also one of the clearest documented steps out of the support tier. The risk is attempting it too early with no practical Azure time; the mitigation is building lab experience first, then using the certification to make that experience legible to recruiters.

The aspiring architect or DevOps engineer. For this person the worth-it question almost answers itself: AZ-104 is mandatory scaffolding for AZ-305 and the practical prerequisite for AZ-400. The only real decision is timing, not whether.

Who should think twice?

The verdict is not universal. AZ-104 is a questionable spend if:

You have no Azure exposure and no intention of getting any. If your organisation and target employers run on AWS or Google Cloud, an Azure operations credential signals little. Certify in the ecosystem you will actually work in.
You are a complete IT beginner. The exam assumes working familiarity with administration concepts and tooling. You expect the badge alone to produce a job offer. It will not. It shortens the odds; it does not replace interviews, projects or experience.
