If you came here planning to book the AZ-204 exam, stop before you build a study plan around it: Microsoft has retired the Azure Developer Associate certification. The official certification page now carries the warning "This certification and the renewal assessment are retired", and as of August 2026 the AZ-204 exam — Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure — can no longer be taken, and the certification can no longer be earned or renewed. Secondary sources place the retirement at the end of July 2026 and name a new AI-focused developer credential as its successor, though Microsoft's own transition guidance remains thin.
That makes this a different kind of certification guide. An honest one, in 2026, has three jobs: explain what the Azure Developer Associate certification was and why it mattered, spell out what the retirement means depending on where you stand — certificate holder, mid-preparation candidate, or developer starting fresh — and lay out the routes that now lead to a credentialed Azure development career. That is exactly what follows.
The short version: AZ-204 was swept up in Microsoft's largest certification overhaul since 2019. Across 2025 and 2026 Microsoft retired roughly a dozen role-based certifications and introduced a wave of AI-centred replacements. The Azure Developer Associate certification retired alongside Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102) and Azure Data Scientist Associate (DP-100), with Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500) scheduled to follow on 31 August 2026.

The direction of travel is unambiguous even where details are hedged: Microsoft is repositioning its developer credential around building AI-enabled applications rather than general Azure service development.
Understanding the retired exam still matters — partly because employers will keep seeing AZ-204 on CVs for years, and partly because the skills it certified remain the daily work of Azure developers regardless of which badge now attests to them.
AZ-204 was the associate-level, proctored exam certifying that a developer could build and maintain cloud applications on Microsoft Azure. Its final published domains were:
Unlike the fundamentals tier, this was an exam that assumed working programming ability; it certified developers, not administrators, and its scenarios were written from inside application code looking out at the platform. Those five skill areas are worth keeping in view: whatever successor credential you eventually pursue, this list is still a fair sketch of what "Azure developer" means to a hiring manager, and none of it stopped being true when the exam retired.
The consequences differ sharply by situation, so find yours.
Your certification does not vanish. It stays on your Microsoft transcript permanently, and you can keep presenting it as evidence of the skills it certified. What you lose is the annual renewal route: the renewal assessment is retired too, so once your certification's current validity period lapses, it cannot be renewed and will show as a historical credential rather than an active one.
Practical advice: plan your next credential before that lapse rather than after. If your work is shifting towards AI-enabled applications — as Microsoft clearly expects — watch for the successor developer credential to get an official Learn page. If your work is closer to platform operations or DevOps, AZ-104 or AZ-400 (see below) may serve your CV better than waiting.
The frustrating scenario, and there is no soft version: the exam cannot be booked, and per secondary reporting there is no voucher or bridge offer for candidates caught mid-stream. Do not study for AZ-204 — retired-exam study materials are abundant, cheap and worthless as a path to a bookable credential. Instead, sequence like this:
AZ-204's retirement has one structural side effect every Azure developer should understand. The DevOps Engineer Expert certification (exam AZ-400) requires candidates to already hold either Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate. With AZ-204 gone, AZ-104 is the practical qualifying route for new candidates.
For developers this is a genuine detour: the administrator exam approaches Azure from the operations side — governance, storage, compute, networking, monitoring — rather than from application code. It is not wasted knowledge for a DevOps-bound engineer, but it is a different exam with a different mindset, so budget for it deliberately rather than discovering the prerequisite after passing nothing but the fundamentals tier. Three questions sort almost every reader of this article onto a path.
First: is your goal building applications, or running the platform? Builders should track the successor developer credential and keep shipping Azure applications in the meantime. Operators — or developers who keep gravitating to infrastructure — should go straight at AZ-104, which is active, stable and load-bearing for the whole portfolio.
Second: how urgent is a bookable credential? If you need something on your CV this quarter, choose from what Microsoft's overhaul left standing: AZ-900 for foundations, AZ-104 for operations, AZ-400 (via the AZ-104 prerequisite) for DevOps, AZ-700 for networking. If you can wait, waiting for the developer successor to firm up is legitimate — provisional exam codes are not something to schedule a career around.
Third: how much AI is in your future work? Microsoft's refresh bets that the answer is "a lot": the reported successor pairs cloud development with AI application skills, and the AI Fundamentals certification (now examined via AI-901) continues at the entry tier. If your development work is heading that way, aligning with the new credential family is the obvious play; if you build line-of-business systems far from AI services, the operations and DevOps tracks may represent your skills more accurately.
