Is Azure Fundamentals Worth It?

Azure Fundamentals is one of the few certifications where the sceptics and the fans are both right. The sceptics: AZ-900 will not, on its own, get anyone a cloud job. The fans: it is cheap, quick, never expires, and is the lowest-friction proof that you understand what cloud computing actually is. Whether it is worth it depends almost entirely on who you are — so this article gives the verdict by profile rather than pretending there is one answer.

What you're actually buying

Strip the badge away and AZ-900 is a defined, examinable claim: you understand cloud concepts, Azure's architecture and services, and Azure management and governance at a conversational level. The mechanics, per Microsoft's official page as of 2026:

• A 45-minute proctored exam (delivered by Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online from home), which may include interactive components. Microsoft does not publish question counts.
• Passing score of 700/1,000 — a scaled score, not 70% correct.
• No prerequisites, and it is a stepping stone by convention only: nothing in the Azure track requires it, and you can sit AZ-104 without it.
• It never expires. Unlike Microsoft's role-based certifications, which lapse after a year (with free online renewal), fundamentals certifications are permanent. Whatever you pay in money and study time, you pay once.
• Cost varies by country — Microsoft prices exams by the region where they are proctored and does not print a universal fee; third-party sources commonly cite about US$99 in the US for fundamentals exams, but confirm the figure for your country on the official exam page before booking.

The time investment is the larger cost for most people: enough study to be genuinely comfortable across three domains of breadth-not-depth material. Microsoft publishes no official study-hours figure, and how long it takes depends on how much IT background you bring.

Who gets real value from AZ-900

Career changers with no cloud history. This is the strongest case. A CV that says "retail manager, now studying cloud computing" is a claim; the same CV with a Microsoft-issued certification is a claim with evidence. AZ-900 does not compete with experience — it substitutes for the total absence of any signal.

Students and recent graduates. The economics are unusually good here: Microsoft offers student scheduling via Certiport, and AZ-900 is eligible for ACE college credit recommendations. A permanent credential earned cheaply while studying is close to a free option.

Non-technical professionals in cloud-adjacent roles. Salespeople, project managers, finance analysts and recruiters who deal with cloud teams get disproportionate value: the certification's actual content — what cloud service models are, how Azure organises resources, how governance and cost management work — is precisely the vocabulary their jobs lack. For this group AZ-900 is not a stepping stone at all; it is the destination.

Beginners who need a forcing function. "Learn cloud" is an unbounded goal that quietly dies; "pass AZ-900 by the end of next month" is a bounded one with a scheduled exam attached. If you know yourself well enough to know you finish things with deadlines and abandon things without them, the booking fee is partly buying commitment.

Who can skip it with a clear conscience

IT professionals already working in or around Azure. If you administer systems, deploy resources or troubleshoot cloud workloads, AZ-900 will mostly certify things you already know, and employers will read your experience as the stronger signal anyway. Developers and engineers with another cloud under their belt. Cloud concepts transfer; if you hold an AWS or Google Cloud credential or equivalent experience, the genuinely new material in AZ-900 is a modest amount of Azure-specific naming and structure, which you can absorb on the way to a role-based cert.

Anyone treating it as a job ticket. The common candidate question "can I get a job with only AZ-900?" deserves a straight answer: it is an entry signal, not a job ticket. If your budget of time and money covers only one certification and you need employment outcomes, a fundamentals cert alone is the weakest play — either pair it with hands-on evidence or put the effort towards an associate-level target.
