Microsoft Azure vs AWS for DevOps Careers

A DevOps engineer picking between Azure and AWS is not really picking a technology — the discipline is the same on both. You are picking an employer pool. AWS held 29% of the cloud infrastructure market to Microsoft's 20% in Q3 2025 (Synergy Research Group), which means more AWS-shaped job adverts overall; but Microsoft's share has been rising while AWS drifts down from roughly 32% in 2021, and Azure dominates a specific, lucrative segment: large enterprises already standardised on Microsoft tooling, GitHub and Entra identity.

Short answer: neither platform is a career mistake. Go AWS for the broadest market and the startup-to-scaleup world; go Azure if your region or target employers skew enterprise, .NET or GitHub-centric. And whichever you choose, keep a deliberate share of your skills platform-neutral — Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD design — because those travel between clouds when your employer, or the market, changes.

Does DevOps pay differ between the two platforms?

Not in any way you can prove. US salary aggregators report DevOps engineer averages of roughly $145,000 (Glassdoor, typical range about $117k–$182k), $134,000 (Indeed), $123,000 (ZipRecruiter) and $134,000 (Built In), all accessed in 2026 — and none of them splits the role by cloud platform. No verified source shows an Azure-vs-AWS pay premium for DevOps work, so treat anyone quoting one with suspicion. Pay varies far more by location, seniority and employer type than by cloud logo, so the platform decision is about which jobs you can reach, not how much they pay.

What the demand data does support:

  • Breadth favours AWS. At 29% infrastructure share, AWS-first companies are simply the largest bucket of potential employers, and AWS reported more than 1.42 million active certifications as of January 2025 — a mature, liquid market for AWS skills on both sides of the hiring table.
  • Trajectory and enterprise concentration favour Azure. Microsoft has gained share for years, and its DevOps stack is the default in organisations that already run on Microsoft 365, Entra and GitHub. In many European and public-sector markets, Azure DevOps roles rival or outnumber AWS ones — check your local job boards before trusting any global generalisation.

The tooling ecosystems you would live in

On AWS, DevOps work means automating AWS's own service estate at depth — the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional certification frames its holder as someone who provisions, operates and manages AWS environments through automation and scripting. The ecosystem rewards deep fluency in AWS-native building blocks, and its professional-tier exam tests exactly that.

On Azure, the striking feature is how much of the DevOps surface is GitHub. Microsoft's AZ-400 blueprint spans source-control strategy, build and release pipelines, security and compliance, and instrumentation across both GitHub and Azure DevOps — and GitHub's own certifications (Foundations GH-900, Actions GH-200, delivered via Pearson VUE with Microsoft Learn since July 2025) slot into the same profile. If you already live in GitHub Actions, you are further along the Azure DevOps path than you may think.

Then there is the layer both platforms share. Kubernetes and Terraform sit underneath a large fraction of modern pipelines on either cloud, and their credentials are platform-portable: the Certified Kubernetes Administrator is a $445, two-hour, fully hands-on exam (valid two years, one free retake included), and HashiCorp's Terraform Associate 004 is a one-hour exam at $70.50. A DevOps engineer whose CV pairs one cloud certification with CKA or Terraform Associate has hedged the platform bet better than one holding two cloud badges.

The career-relevant reading of that table: the AWS track is a single hard summit that also renews AWS Developer and CloudOps Associate certs beneath it; the Azure track is a staircase that leaves you holding two credentials and costs almost nothing to maintain, since Microsoft role-based certifications renew annually through a free, unproctored online assessment. A decision framework: five questions before you commit

  1. What do the last twenty relevant job adverts in your market name? Count them. This one exercise outweighs every global market-share statistic, because you work in a local market, not a global one.
  2. What does your current employer run? Certifying the platform you can practise on daily beats certifying the theoretically bigger market. Hands-on depth is what both tracks' exams — and interviews — actually test.
  3. Where does your code live? A GitHub-centred organisation overlaps heavily with the AZ-400 syllabus; an organisation deep in AWS-native tooling points the other way.
  4. Which background are you converting from? Ops-side engineers absorb the AZ-104 prerequisite easily; developers with no Azure admin exposure face a real detour there, which nudges some towards AWS's single-exam route.
  5. How volatile is your situation? The less certain you are of staying on one cloud, the more of your study budget belongs in portable credentials (CKA, Terraform) alongside — or even before — either cloud track.

A worked example: an engineer in a mid-sized UK city finds fourteen of twenty local DevOps adverts naming Azure, works at a Microsoft-shop insurer, and hosts everything in GitHub. Every signal points one way — AZ-104 then AZ-400 — regardless of AWS's larger global share. Reverse the advert count and employer stack, and the same framework points to DOP-C02. That is the point: the framework decides, not the brand.

What switching later actually costs

The fear behind this decision is usually irreversibility, so it is worth pricing the switch honestly. An Azure-track DevOps engineer moving to an AWS shop does not restart from zero: pipeline design, branching strategy, infrastructure-as-code discipline, monitoring and incident practice all carry over untouched, and if the engineer's IaC is Terraform and workloads run on Kubernetes, the majority of daily work barely changes. What does not carry over is the platform-specific layer — service names, IAM models, native tooling — plus the credential itself, since neither provider recognises the other's certifications.

The certification economics of switching are also asymmetric. Entering the Azure track from AWS means passing two exams (AZ-104, then AZ-400) because of Microsoft's hard prerequisite; entering the AWS track from Azure means one professional-level exam at $300, with no gate but a famously demanding three-hour format. In both directions, the pragmatic sequence is the same one that worked the first time: get hands-on on the new platform for a few months before booking anything, because both providers' senior exams test operational judgement that reading cannot fake.

Three habits keep the switching cost low from the start:

  • Prefer portable defaults where your employer allows. Terraform over a cloud's native templating and Kubernetes over proprietary orchestration, where the trade-off is otherwise neutral, keeps your experience legible to the other half of the market.
  • Describe your work in platform-neutral terms on your CV — "designed release pipelines with automated rollback" recruits better across clouds than a list of provider service names.
  • Renew deliberately. If you have genuinely left a platform behind, letting its credential lapse is often the right call; maintaining two clouds' certifications indefinitely is a real recurring cost in study time, even where (as with Microsoft's free annual renewal) it is not a cost in money.

Pick the platform your evidence supports, then sequence deliberately: get hands-on first, certify second, and add one portable credential within the following year.
