Historically there were two routes in — AZ-104 or the developer-track AZ-204 — but the Azure Developer Associate certification was retired in Microsoft's 2026 certification overhaul, so AZ-104 is now the practical path for new candidates. The staircase is not purely a cost. For engineers coming from a development background rather than an ops background, AZ-104's administration syllabus — identities, storage, compute, networking, monitoring — is a genuine detour. For ops-side engineers it is largely material you should know anyway, and you finish the journey holding two marketable certifications instead of one.

Exam style: what sitting each one is like

DOP-C02 is a known quantity: 75 questions in 180 minutes, multiple choice and multiple response, at Pearson VUE test centres or online proctored. AWS professional-level questions are famously long scenario prompts where several answers work and you must pick the one that best satisfies the stated constraint — most operationally efficient, most cost-effective, least management overhead. Three hours of that is as much a reading-stamina exam as a technical one. The passing score is 750 on AWS's 100–1,000 scale, the highest threshold in AWS's portfolio tiering. There are no labs on any current AWS exam.

AZ-400 ("Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions") is less publicly specified: Microsoft deliberately does not publish question counts, and only time limits appear on exam pages — confirm the current duration on the AZ-400 exam page before booking. Microsoft exams may include interactive components beyond plain multiple choice; the free exam sandbox shows the question styles in advance, which is worth an hour of anyone's preparation. The passing score is 700 on a 1,000-point scale — scaled, not 70% correct. Its published skill areas cover DevOps processes and communications, source-control strategy, build and release pipelines, a security and compliance plan, and an instrumentation strategy, spanning both GitHub and Azure DevOps tooling.

Neither provider publishes pass rates, so claims that one exam "fails more candidates" are folklore. The honest difficulty comparison: DOP-C02 concentrates all its difficulty into one long, dense sitting; the Azure route spreads difficulty across two shorter exams, one of which (AZ-104) is a level below.

DOP-C02 certifies the same discipline expressed entirely in AWS services, at the depth AWS reserves for its Professional tier — AWS's own framing is engineers who provision, operate and manage AWS environments with automation. Both platforms leave a shared toolbox uncertified: Kubernetes, Terraform and similar cross-platform tools have their own credentials (CKA, Terraform Associate) that travel with you across employers, whichever cloud badge you choose.

Total cost over three years, not just the exam fee

Sticker prices mislead here, because validity and renewal rules differ sharply.

  • AWS route: $300 for DOP-C02 (regional pricing varies), valid three years. Renewal means retaking the current professional exam — though active AWS cert holders get a 50% discount voucher towards their next exam, which softens both the initial climb (if you hold an Associate cert) and recertification. Budget for the retake cycle as a real recurring cost.
  • Azure route: two exams to enter — AZ-104 plus AZ-400, each priced by country (Microsoft prints no flat USD figure; associate/expert exams are commonly cited around US$165 by third parties, but treat that as unofficial). After that, renewal is where Microsoft wins outright: role-based certifications expire after one year but renew free through an online, unproctored, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn, retakeable without limit within the renewal window. Held for six years, the Azure credential's exam spend is front-loaded and then effectively zero; the AWS credential bills you again every third year.

If you fail either provider's exam, retakes are permitted after a waiting period (24 hours for a first Microsoft retake, with longer waits later; AWS retakes follow its published policy) — but every attempt is a fresh fee, unlike Kubernetes-style exams that bundle a free retake.

Both credentials target the same well-paid role family. US salary aggregators put DevOps engineer pay in six figures on average — Glassdoor showed roughly $145,000 average total pay and Indeed about $134,000 as of August 2026 — with the usual caveat that pay varies widely by location, experience and employer, and no figure is specific to either certification.

On platform footprint, Synergy Research Group's Q3 2025 data puts AWS at 29% of the cloud infrastructure market, Microsoft at 20% and Google at 13%, with AWS's share drifting down from around 32% in 2021 while Microsoft and Google gained. Read practically: AWS-skilled DevOps engineers face the largest pool of employers; Azure-skilled ones face a large and growing pool, weighted towards enterprises standardised on Microsoft. AWS also reported over 1.42 million active certifications as of January 2025 — recognition for its credentials is not in question, but neither is competition among holders.

Two engineers, two right answers

Scenario one: a platform engineer with three years running EKS clusters and Terraform on AWS, whose employer has no Azure footprint. DOP-C02 is the obvious move — no prerequisite detour, direct validation of daily work, and the professional tier signals seniority in the ecosystem where this engineer's next three job applications will land.

Scenario two: a .NET developer at an enterprise that hosts code on GitHub, deploys to Azure and manages identity through Entra. The AZ-104 → AZ-400 staircase costs an extra exam but produces two credentials aligned to the actual estate — and the annual free renewal keeps both current with negligible ongoing cost. Sitting DOP-C02 instead would certify a platform this developer never touches.
