Azure Certification Career Path for Beginners

A stage-by-stage Azure certification sequence from zero experience to expert level, with 2026 retirement caveats and role-based branch points.

Two people decide to "get Azure certified" in the same month. The first books AZ-900 immediately, passes, then drifts — unsure what comes next, eventually taking a security fundamentals exam because it looked interesting. The second spends one evening choosing a destination role, works backwards from it, and eighteen months later holds AZ-104 and is preparing for an expert-level exam that a job listing actually names. Same starting point, same ability; the difference was sequencing.

This article is that one evening of planning, done for you. It lays out the order in which to take Azure certifications from zero experience to expert level, where the path branches by role, and — critically for anyone starting in 2026 — which certifications you must not build a plan around because Microsoft has retired them. First, understand the ladder you are climbing

Microsoft organises Azure certifications into three rungs, and the entire path strategy falls out of three structural facts:

  • Fundamentals certifications (AZ-900, DP-900, SC-900, AI-901's parent cert) are beginner-level, have no prerequisites, use short 45-minute exams, and never expire.
  • Associate certifications (AZ-104, AZ-700, DP-700, SC-200 and others) are the professional workhorses. They expire after twelve months but renew free through an online, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn — so an associate cert is a one-time exam fee plus an annual half-hour of upkeep, not a recurring cost.
  • Expert certifications are where sequencing becomes mandatory rather than advisable. Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires you to hold Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) — passing exam AZ-305 alone awards nothing — and DevOps Engineer Expert (AZ-400) likewise requires an associate credential first (AZ-104 being the practical route today).

All technical exams are scored on a 1–1,000 scale with a pass mark of 700 — a scaled score, not 70% — delivered through Pearson VUE at a test centre or online from home, with pricing set per country. The consequence for path planning: everything below expert level is technically optional and skippable; the expert rung is not. Every sensible beginner path therefore converges on AZ-104 sooner or later.

A 2026 warning before you plan anything

Microsoft is mid-way through its largest certification overhaul since 2019. Between mid-2025 and September 2026 it retired roughly a dozen role-based certifications, several of which still headline older roadmap articles:

  • DP-203 (Azure Data Engineer Associate) — retired March 2025; DP-700 Fabric Data Engineer Associate is the current data-engineering credential.
  • DP-100 (Azure Data Scientist Associate) — retired mid-2026.
  • AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate) — retired mid-2026.
  • AZ-204 (Azure Developer Associate) — retired July 2026, removing one of the two former routes to AZ-400.
  • AZ-500 (Azure Security Engineer Associate) — retires 31 August 2026.
  • MS-900 (Microsoft 365 Fundamentals) — retired.
  • The AI-900 exam was replaced by AI-901 in April 2026, though the Azure AI Fundamentals certification itself continues.

Secondary sources name AI-focused successor exams (AI-200, AI-103, AI-300, SC-500), but official pages for these were not verifiable at the time of writing, and no automatic migration or discount to the replacements has been published. The practical rule for beginners: before committing to any certification in a plan — including plans published on reputable sites — open its Microsoft Learn page and confirm there is no retirement banner. Stage 0: choose a destination before an exam

The single most common beginner mistake is choosing the first exam before choosing the target role. Use this quick framework:

  • You like infrastructure, systems and keeping things running → cloud administrator/engineer track: AZ-900 → AZ-104 → AZ-305.
  • You like automation, pipelines and shipping software → DevOps track: AZ-900 → AZ-104 → AZ-400.
  • You like data → data track: DP-900 → DP-700 (engineering) or PL-300 (analysis).
  • You like security → security track: SC-900 → SC-200 or SC-300 (with AZ-104 a strong complement).
  • Genuinely undecided → take AZ-900 first anyway; it is the cheapest way to discover which of these descriptions fits you.

You do not need to be right forever. Every track shares the fundamentals stage, and AZ-104 sits on three of the five, so early choices are cheap to revise.

Stage 1: fundamentals — one exam, not four

Start with Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900): a 45-minute, no-prerequisite exam covering cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and management and governance. It never expires, is priced at the fundamentals tier (Microsoft sets prices by country — commonly cited around US$99 in the US, but confirm on the official page), and is the standard on-ramp for people with no cloud background. Should you collect the other fundamentals (DP-900, SC-900, AI-901)? As a beginner, take at most one extra, and only if it matches your Stage 0 destination — DP-900 for the data track, SC-900 for security. Stacking all four fundamentals is a popular procrastination pattern: it feels like progress while deferring the associate-level jump that employers actually notice.

Time budget: Microsoft publishes no official study-hour figures, and honest ones depend on your background — an experienced sysadmin needs far less time than a career changer. Plan in weeks, not days, and let practice-test scores rather than the calendar tell you when you are ready.

Stage 2: the associate hinge — AZ-104

Whatever your destination, treat Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) as the centre of gravity of a beginner path. Three reasons:

  1. It is the mandatory prerequisite for Azure Solutions Architect Expert and the practical prerequisite route for DevOps Engineer Expert now that AZ-204 is retired.
  2. Its domains — identities and governance, storage, compute, virtual networking, monitoring — are the operational substrate every other Azure specialism builds on.

Do not underestimate the step up from AZ-900. The exam runs 100 minutes, may include interactive components, and assumes working familiarity with the Azure portal, PowerShell, the Azure CLI and ARM or Bicep templates. This is the stage where hands-on lab time becomes non-negotiable: a free or low-cost Azure subscription, deliberately built and broken resources, and repetition in the tools. But even on those tracks, many practitioners add AZ-104 eventually, because data platforms and security controls both live on infrastructure someone must understand.

How to know you are ready to book

A readiness checklist that works for any associate exam:

  • You can perform each study-guide task in a live subscription without following a tutorial.
  • Timed, full-length practice tests score comfortably above the pass threshold consistently, not once.
  • Your practice-test results, broken down by domain, show no domain dramatically weaker than the rest — weak-domain targeting is the main analytical value of practising, far more than question familiarity.
  • You are reviewing why wrong answers are wrong, not memorising which letter was right.

With AZ-104 held, the path forks properly.

The architecture branch: AZ-305

Exam AZ-305, Designing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions, tests design judgement — identity and governance design, data storage design, business continuity, infrastructure — rather than implementation mechanics. Combined with your held AZ-104, it awards Azure Solutions Architect Expert. This branch suits people who want to move from operating systems to deciding how they should be built. The automation branch: AZ-400

Exam AZ-400 covers DevOps processes, source control strategy, build and release pipelines, security and compliance in the pipeline, and instrumentation, across both GitHub and Azure DevOps. Sideways rather than up

Expert level is not compulsory. Specialising sideways from AZ-104 — into networking with AZ-700, or endpoint management with MD-102 — is a legitimate Stage 3 for people whose target roles are specialist rather than senior-generalist. How to study differently at each stage

The path fails quietly when beginners carry Stage 1 study habits into Stage 2, so it is worth naming how the work changes as you climb.

At fundamentals level, reading and watching genuinely suffice. AZ-900 tests concepts and vocabulary — what elasticity means, which service category solves which problem, how Azure's management and governance constructs relate. Microsoft Learn's free self-paced modules cover the ground, and your practice questions are mainly a comprehension check: if you miss a question, the fix is re-reading a concept, not building anything.

At associate level, the ratio inverts: perhaps a third of your time in learning material and two-thirds in a live subscription. AZ-104's domains are verbs — implement, deploy, manage, monitor — and the exam may include interactive components that assume you have actually clicked through, scripted and broken these things. A cheap but effective lab routine: pick one study-guide task per session, build it in the portal, tear it down, rebuild it with the CLI or PowerShell, and note what surprised you. The surprises are the exam content. Practice tests change their job here too — less comprehension check, more diagnostic instrument. Analyse results by domain, target the weakest domain for a week, retest, repeat. And resist the temptation to re-run the same question set until the scores look good: rising scores through familiarity is answer-memorisation, and it produces confident candidates who fail. At expert level, study becomes judgement practice. Building experience alongside the certifications

A certification path that produces only certifications is half a career plan. Interleave evidence of real use at every stage:

  • During Stage 1, open a free Azure account and reproduce what the learning modules describe, even though AZ-900 does not strictly require it. This front-loads the comfort Stage 2 depends on.
  • Between AZ-900 and AZ-104, volunteer for cloud-adjacent work where you are: a script that automates a manual task, a monitoring dashboard, involvement in a migration ticket. Job titles matter less than artefacts you can describe in an interview.
  • After AZ-104, change what you apply for. The associate credential's greatest career value is unlocking roles where Azure is your day job, which in turn generates the experience the expert tier assumes. This is also the stage where a small portfolio — a documented lab environment, infrastructure-as-code templates in a public repository — quietly outperforms a third fundamentals badge.
  • Before the expert exam, accumulate decisions, not just deployments: times you chose between storage options, argued for a governance structure, or planned for failure. AZ-305 and AZ-400 both examine the thinking behind the build.

A realistic end-to-end timeline

A worked scenario rather than a promise. A helpdesk analyst with two years of general IT experience but no cloud exposure might run the path like this: AZ-900 over the first couple of months while still learning what Azure is; a deliberate pause to get hands-on lab time; AZ-104 somewhere in months four to nine depending on study hours available around a full-time job; then six months to a year working with Azure — applying for cloud-adjacent duties or roles on the strength of AZ-104 — before attempting AZ-305 or AZ-400. Total: eighteen months to two years from zero to expert, with a job change in the middle rather than at the end.

The pause in the middle is a feature. Expert exams reward production experience, and hiring managers reward it more. A beginner who sprints AZ-900 → AZ-104 → AZ-305 in six months with no real workload behind them holds an impressive transcript that interviews poorly.

Five sequencing mistakes that waste beginners' time

  1. Planning around retired certifications. Any 2024-era roadmap featuring AZ-204, AI-102, DP-100, DP-203 or AZ-500 as targets is now wrong. Check the Learn page banner first, every time.
  2. Fundamentals hoarding. Two fundamentals maximum before an associate attempt.
  3. Studying for AZ-104 like AZ-900. The jump is large; video courses alone do not build portal and CLI fluency. Lab time is the difference.
  4. Attempting AZ-305 without holding AZ-104. You can sit the exam, but the Expert certification will not be awarded until AZ-104 is on your transcript — sequence the associate first and save the fee timing.
  5. Letting certifications lapse. Role-based certs expire after one year; the renewal is free, online and open book. Set a reminder when the six-month renewal window opens, because an expired cert undoes paid-for progress.

Which Azure certification should I take first with no IT background?

AZ-900. It assumes nothing, its exam is the shortest and cheapest in the family, the certification never expires, and preparing for it doubles as your orientation to cloud computing generally. Career changers gain the most from not skipping it.

Can I skip AZ-900 and go straight to AZ-104?
