Yet the system behind those codes is one of the most orderly in the IT industry: every credential fits into one of three levels, every exam code tells you its technology family at a glance, and one renewal policy covers almost everything. A Microsoft certification is a credential you earn by passing one or more proctored exams (and, in two cases, by also holding a prerequisite certification). It lands on a permanent online transcript hosted by Microsoft, and for professional-level credentials it stays active only while you renew it. Three separate things get confused constantly, so pin the vocabulary down early:

Every mainstream Microsoft certification sits at one of three levels, and the differences between levels are structural, not just difficulty labels.
Fundamentals certifications (the ones ending in -900, such as Azure Fundamentals via AZ-900, Azure Data Fundamentals via DP-900 and Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals via SC-900) are the beginner tier. Their exams run 45 minutes, have no prerequisites, and cover concepts and vocabulary rather than hands-on tasks. Associate certifications are the professional core — Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), Security Operations Analyst Associate (SC-200), Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700), Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300), Endpoint Administrator Associate (MD-102) and more. Their exams typically run 100 minutes, may include interactive components, and assume real working experience with the technology. Formally, most have no prerequisites — you can sit AZ-104 without ever taking AZ-900. Associate certifications expire after twelve months, with a free renewal mechanism described below.
Expert certifications sit on top, and here prerequisites become mandatory. Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires you to hold Azure Administrator Associate before the certification is awarded — passing its exam (AZ-305) alone is not enough — and DevOps Engineer Expert (via exam AZ-400) similarly requires a qualifying associate certification first. These are the only two certifications in the current system with hard certification prerequisites, and both renew annually like associates.
Alongside the three levels, Microsoft also offers Applied Skills: free, scenario-based online assessments that verify one narrow skill, carry no expiry, and act as a lighter-weight complement to full certifications rather than a rung on the ladder.
Exam codes follow a two-part convention: a letter prefix for the technology family, and a number whose hundreds digit signals the tier. The prefixes you will meet most often:

The numbers: -900 means fundamentals, always. Below that, mid-range numbers are role-based exams at associate or expert level — AZ-104 (administrator), AZ-305 (architect design), AZ-400 (DevOps), AZ-700 (networking), SC-200 (security operations), SC-300 (identity), DP-700 (data engineering), MD-102 (endpoint). The number alone does not distinguish associate from expert; the certification page does.
One quirk worth knowing: codes get retired and replaced as technology moves. The AZ-104 administrator exam, for instance, succeeded earlier exams AZ-103 and AZ-102, and in April 2026 the AI-900 fundamentals exam was replaced by AI-901 while the Azure AI Fundamentals certification itself carried on. If you find study material for a code you cannot find on Microsoft Learn, it is probably a predecessor.

Here is the policy that most separates Microsoft from other certification bodies, and the one beginners most often get wrong: role-based certifications (associate, expert and specialty) expire after one year — but renewal is free.
Within a six-month window before expiry, Microsoft Learn offers an online renewal assessment for each certification you hold. It is unproctored, open book, costs nothing, and can be retaken as many times as needed before the expiry date. Pass it and your certification extends for another year; miss the window and the credential lapses, after which the only route back is re-sitting (and re-paying for) the full exam.
Fundamentals certifications are exempt: they never expire and need no renewal. And whatever happens, everything you have ever earned remains visible on your transcript — an expired certification shows as historical rather than vanishing.
Two related misconceptions to clear while we are here: Microsoft certifications do not last three years (that is another vendor's policy), and the renewal assessment is nothing like the original exam in stakes — it is a low-pressure knowledge refresh, not a proctored retest.

Any beginner researching Microsoft certifications in 2026 will hit contradictory information, because Microsoft is executing its largest catalogue overhaul since 2019. Between March 2025 and September 2026 it retired a swathe of role-based certifications — among them Azure Developer Associate (AZ-204), Azure AI Engineer Associate (AI-102), Azure Data Scientist Associate (DP-100), Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP-203, replaced in role by DP-700) and, from 31 August 2026, Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500) — while introducing new AI-centred replacements whose details were still stabilising at the time of writing. Retired certifications cannot be earned or renewed, though existing holders keep them on their transcripts permanently, and Microsoft has published no automatic migration or discount to the successors.
For a newcomer, the operational takeaway is a single habit: the Microsoft Learn certification page is the only source of truth for whether a credential is currently earnable. A retirement banner at the top of the page overrules every roadmap, course catalogue and blog post — including, eventually, this one. As of this writing, safe currently earnable examples include AZ-900, SC-900, DP-900, AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-400, AZ-700, SC-200, SC-300, PL-300, DP-700 and MD-102.
Pull up any credential on Microsoft Learn and check, in order: (1) any retirement banner; (2) the required exam code and its "last updated" date, since objectives shift within a code; (3) the skills-measured outline and its linked study guide, which carries the official domain weightings; (4) prerequisites, if any; (5) the renewal note. That habit — going to the primary page rather than to folklore — is the real skill this article is trying to install.
A worked example of the habit paying off: an office administrator decides in 2026 to move towards IT and finds a well-reviewed 2024 course recommending MS-900 as "the beginner Microsoft cert".
