How to Create a 60-Day Certification Exam Study Plan

Structure two months of certification prep: a learning phase, a proper midpoint benchmark, and an evidence-driven second month with spaced review.

The most common mistake with a two-month exam timeline is treating it as one long month: study continuously for eight weeks, test yourself at the end, hope. Sixty days works differently, and better, when you cut it in half. Month one is for learning the syllabus. Then — and this is the part most candidates skip — you stop for a genuine midpoint benchmark, a two-to-three-day audit of exactly where you stand. Month two is built from that audit's results, not from the plan you wrote on day one.

That hinge in the middle is what makes 60 days arguably the best-value prep window there is. A 30-day sprint has no room for a real course correction; a 90-day marathon has to fight motivation decay across a long middle. Two months gives you one full learning cycle, one honest measurement, and one full cycle to act on it. This article structures those sixty days. Who the 60-day window suits

Two months comfortably fits mid-scope exams approached seriously: CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701 — a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, passing at 750 on a 100–900 scale) for someone with modest security exposure; AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03 — 65 questions, 130 minutes, passing at 720 on a 100–1,000 scale) for someone already working with AWS; either CompTIA A+ exam. It also fits foundational exams for candidates starting from genuinely zero background, where a one-month sprint would mean learning fundamentals under time pressure.

For very large syllabi — CISSP's eight domains, or both A+ exams back-to-back from a standing start — sixty days can work but leaves little slack; weigh the 90-day structure before committing.

Days 1–3: set up the machine

Before the learning phase begins, three setup tasks:

Fix the skeleton dates. On a real calendar, mark: day 30–32 as the midpoint benchmark (block it like an appointment — it is one), day 53 or so as your final full-length practice test, and the last three days as taper. Everything else flexes; these don't.

Map the syllabus to the first four weeks. Get the current official exam guide — current meaning current codes: SY0-701, 220-1201/1202, CLF-C02, SAA-C03, not their retired predecessors — and distribute its domains across weeks 1–4 in proportion to their published weightings. Weeks 1–4: the learning phase

Month one's goal is complete first-pass coverage with retention that survives into month two. Three operating principles:

Learn on a spaced rhythm, not in blocks you never revisit. The single biggest advantage of 60 days over 30 is room for spacing. The research here is unambiguous — Cepeda and colleagues' 2006 review in Psychological Bulletin found distributed practice reliably outperforms massed study — so build the rhythm in: each week, spend most of your time on that week's new domains and a fixed slice (say, one session) re-testing yourself on everything already covered. By week 4 that review slice is touching three weeks of old material, which is precisely the point. End every study block with retrieval. Questions answered from memory, concepts explained aloud, blank-page recall — anything but rereading. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 work on the testing effect showed recall practice beats restudying for long-term retention, and the Dunlosky 2013 technique review rates practice testing and distributed practice as the highest-utility study techniques while rating rereading and highlighting low. Log errors and hard topics as you go. A running error log (question, objective, one-line reason) plus a short "not clicking" list. Month two is built from these documents. Weekly milestones keep the phase honest: each Sunday, the week's assigned domains are covered, the review slice is done, and you can pass a quick self-quiz on the week's objectives. Miss two weekly milestones in a row and you adjust the map now — that's a fortnight of slack you still have, which the sprint plan never does. Days 30–32: the midpoint benchmark

This is the phase that defines the 60-day plan, so give it real weight — two or three days, structured:

Day 30: full-length timed simulation. Real question count, real clock, no notes, one sitting. A proper practice-test simulation rather than casual question drilling, because you're measuring three things at once: knowledge, pacing, and stamina.

Day 31: the audit. Break the result down per domain and put it beside your day-1 baseline. For each domain, assign one of three statuses:

  • Secure — at or above where the passing standard demands, and improved since baseline. Maintenance only in month two.
  • Improving — clearly better than baseline but below the bar. These get scheduled repetition.
  • Stuck — little movement since day 1. These get the most month-two time and a change of method, because five more weeks of the approach that produced no movement will produce no movement.

Calibrate honestly against your exam's actual standard: 750/900 for Security+, 720/1,000 for SAA-C03, 700/1,000 for Cloud Practitioner, 675 and 700/900 for A+ Core 1 and Core 2. And read scores with the right caveats — scaled scores exist to equate exam forms of differing difficulty (AWS's exam guides say so explicitly), several exams carry unscored pilot items, and a practice score is one form on one day. Aim for margin above the line by the end, not a knife-edge pass at the midpoint.

Day 32: rewrite month two. Redistribute weeks 5–7 across your domains in proportion to the audit — stuck domains first and largest, improving domains on a steady drumbeat, secure domains down to brief weekly touches. The midpoint is also your cheap decision point on the date itself. If the benchmark lands far below the bar, look at rescheduling now, while it costs little — providers' change policies and fees vary (ISC2, for one, lists a $50 reschedule fee), and moving a date at day 32 is trivial compared with day 58.

Weeks 5–7: the evidence-driven phase

Month two runs on a different fuel: your audit, not the syllabus map.

  • Alternate repair and measurement. For stuck domains, restudy from a different angle than month one — different source, different format, hands-on where the exam is hands-on (Security+ and both A+ exams include performance-based questions, which reward doing over recognising). Follow each repair session with fresh questions on that domain, never the same items you missed before; re-answering remembered questions inflates scores without touching understanding, and it's exactly the habit that makes real exams feel harsher than practice.
  • Keep the spacing engine running. Secure domains still get their brief weekly retrieval touch. Two months is long enough for early material to decay by exam day; the review slice is what prevents week-1 material becoming a week-8 surprise.
  • Take a second full timed test at the end of week 6 (around day 42–45). One measurement between benchmark and final test, to confirm the stuck domains are actually moving. Week 8: converge and taper

  • Days 50–53: final full-length timed test, ideally at your real exam's time of day. After it, stop measuring and start consolidating.
  • Days 54–57: error log and summaries only — newest errors first, each struck off only when you can explain the right answer's reasoning. No new material crosses the threshold this week.
  • Days 58–60: taper. Short reviews, logistics (appointment confirmed; for online proctored exams check your programme's rules in advance — CompTIA's, for instance, require photo ID exactly matching your registration name, a webcam room scan, and a work surface cleared of paper and extra monitors), and sleep. Sixty days of spaced, tested preparation is robust; a panicked final all-nighter is the only thing likely to damage it.
