Free AI-900: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals Exam Questions and Answers
This exam retired on 30 June 2026. It was replaced by AI-901: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals. The questions here still cover most of the same ground, and the new exam’s own page has the current bank.
AI-900: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals is the entry point to Microsoft's AI certification track, aimed at people starting out in AI solution development rather than experienced engineers. Microsoft replaced it with AI-901 in the April 2026 update, so if you are booking a sitting now, check which code your voucher covers — the syllabus is largely shared. Five areas are assessed: AI workloads and considerations, the fundamental principles of machine learning on Azure, computer vision, natural language processing, and generative AI workloads. Microsoft expects conceptual knowledge rather than deep implementation skill, but does assume familiarity with Azure resources and basic Python syntax.

FAQ
Learn More: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/credentials/
- Q1: Is the AI-900 exam still available, or has it been replaced?
- A: No. Microsoft retired the AI-900 exam on June 30, 2026, and replaced it with AI-901. As of October 2026, candidates who want the Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals certification must pass AI-901, whose English version was updated on April 15, 2026.
- Q2: How much does the AI-900 exam cost?
- A: While it was live, the real exam cost USD 99 in the United States, and Microsoft prices exams by the country or region where they are proctored. As of October 2026 the replacement exam, AI-901, is listed at the same fundamentals-level price of USD 99 in the United States, before tax.
- Q3: How many questions are on the AI-900 exam and how long is it?
- A: Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count, but states that most of its certification exams contain 40 to 60 questions. Fundamentals exams such as AI-900 and AI-901 give you 45 minutes of exam time within a 65-minute seat time that includes instructions and the candidate agreement.
- Q4: What question formats does the AI-900 exam use?
- A: Microsoft does not confirm the exact mix for any single exam, but its fundamentals and role-based exams can include multiple choice, multiple response, drag and drop, hot area, build list, active screen and case study items. Access to Microsoft Learn during the exam is not available on fundamentals exams.
- Q5: What is the passing score for the AI-900 exam?
- A: The passing score for AI-900 was 700 on Microsoft's scaled scoring, and AI-901 uses the same 700 passing score. Scores are scaled, so 700 does not mean 70 percent of questions correct.
- Q6: Are there prerequisites for the AI-900 exam, and does the certification expire?
- A: There are no prerequisites; the exam was designed for people with both technical and non-technical backgrounds, and data science or software engineering experience was not required. Microsoft fundamentals certifications, including Azure AI Fundamentals, do not expire and need no renewal.
- Q7: What domains did the AI-900 exam cover, and how is AI-901 different?
- A: When it retired, AI-900 measured AI workloads and considerations (15-20%), machine learning principles on Azure (15-20%), computer vision workloads (15-20%), natural language processing workloads (15-20%) and generative AI workloads (20-25%). AI-901 has just two skill areas: identifying AI concepts and capabilities (40-45%) and implementing AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry (55-60%), and it expects familiarity with Python syntax and Azure resources.
- Q8: What languages is the exam offered in, and what is the retake policy?
- A: AI-900 was offered in 13 languages, including English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Indonesian, Arabic and Italian, and AI-901 is offered in the same languages.
