You have the list. Maybe it came from a practice-test breakdown, maybe from a study tracker full of stubborn low ratings — either way, you know which topics are dragging you down, and the temptation now is to simply "study them more". That instinct produces the most common failure in late-stage exam prep: candidates reread their weakest chapters, feel marginally better, and arrive at the exam with the same gaps wearing a fresh coat of familiarity. A weak-area revision plan replaces "more studying" with a schedule of deliberately designed repair sessions, each with a re-test attached and a defined exit condition.
To be clear about scope: this article is about the remediation itself. Take your weak topics and score each on two axes:
Sort by impact, then cap the plan. Three to five topics per fortnight is a realistic remediation load alongside normal revision; a plan that tries to fix twelve topics at once is a wish list. Low-impact stragglers stay on the backlog and get picked up in the next cycle. Knowledge gaps need first-pass learning, not revision. Go back to a primary source — the relevant section of your course or book — and treat the topic as new: notes, worked examples, then questions. Budget these the longest sessions.
Retention gaps need retrieval, not re-exposure. The evidence here is unambiguous: recall practice beats rereading for long-term retention (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006), and reviews of study techniques rate practice testing and distributed practice at the top while rereading rates poorly (Dunlosky et al., 2013). Convert the fading material into self-test prompts or flashcards and schedule repeated retrieval attempts across the plan's span rather than one big refresh — spacing the returns is what makes them stick (Cepeda et al., 2006).
Understanding gaps need reconstruction. Rereading feels productive here and does nothing, because the words were never the problem. Explain the concept aloud in plain language until it breaks, find the exact sentence where it breaks, and repair that — then immediately test with scenario questions and, critically, justify why each wrong option is wrong. A repair session has a fixed shape, and it is not "open the book at the weak chapter":
Each topic gets a minimum of three touches, spread out — for example: session one early in week one, a shorter retrieval-only session two or three days later, and a final re-test early in week two. Interleave topics rather than blocking a whole week on one; returning to a topic after a gap is harder and that difficulty is the point. A fortnight for a three-to-five-topic cycle works well. Slot these sessions into your existing timetable rather than replacing it — the plan is a targeted overlay on normal prep, and if you do not have a timetable to overlay it on, build a personalised exam preparation schedule first.
Two scheduling rules from hard experience: put repair sessions early in the day or study block, while resistance is lowest — weak topics are the ones you will happily displace with anything else; and keep at least a quarter of your weekly study time on general mixed revision, so strong areas do not quietly decay while you firefight.
A topic leaves the plan when it passes a pre-defined bar, decided before you start — for instance: two exit tests, on different days, at or above roughly 80% on fresh questions, plus one clean plain-language explanation. When a topic exits, update its status in your tracker and schedule one confirmation check a couple of weeks later, because a repaired topic that silently regresses is worse than a known weak one.
When a topic fails to exit after a full cycle, do not simply re-enrol it on the same plan. Change something: the gap-type label (many "retention" problems turn out to be understanding problems), the source material, or the format of practice. Repeating an intervention that did not work is rereading in disguise.
After each cycle, take a full-length, timed practice test and compare the domain breakdown with the previous one. This is the honest scoreboard: per-topic exit tests can improve while the exam-level picture stays flat, usually because time pressure or question mixing was the real weakness all along. Two cautions when reading results: many certification exams use scaled scoring and unscored pilot items (AWS documents both openly), so chase the per-domain pattern rather than a single number, and never respond to a weak domain by memorising the answers to questions you have already seen — recognising a repeated question is not the same skill as answering a new one.
One page. A ranked list of three to five topics, each labelled with its gap type; six to twelve dated calendar slots over a fortnight, each naming its topic and session shape; an exit bar written at the top; and a full practice test booked for the end. If your plan is longer than that, it has absorbed jobs that belong to your checklist, your tracker or your master schedule. Keep it small, run the cycle, measure, and start the next one — remediation is a loop you repeat until exam day, not a document you perfect.
A meaningful cycle needs about two weeks: three spaced touches per topic plus a verification test. Inside that window, shrink to your one or two highest-weighted weak topics and accept that the rest are triage losses.
