How to Build a Personalised Exam Preparation Schedule

Build a week-by-week certification study schedule around your exam date, baseline knowledge and real available hours, with checkpoints that tell you if you're on track.

Two candidates register for the same certification. One is a sysadmin who already does half the syllabus at work and can study ten hours a week; the other is changing careers and has four hours a week after childcare. A template that hands both of them "8 weeks, 1 hour a day" fails both of them. A schedule only works when it is derived from three numbers that are yours alone: how far away your exam is, how much of the syllabus you already know, and how many hours you can genuinely commit.

This guide walks you through producing that schedule — a concrete week-by-week plan you could pin above your desk — in six steps. Step 1: Get the raw materials — objectives and a baseline

Every credible schedule starts from the official exam objectives (sometimes called the blueprint or exam guide), because the provider is telling you, domain by domain, what the exam contains and how much each domain is worth. Download it from the provider's certification page before you buy anything else. Next, measure where you are starting from. Guessing your baseline is the single most common scheduling mistake — most people either over-rate familiarity ("I use this at work") or under-rate it ("I've never studied this formally"). Instead, take an untimed diagnostic: work through a set of questions covering all domains and score yourself per domain. A spread of free sample questions across your exam's domains is enough for a first reading. You now have a per-domain picture: strong, partial, or new.

Step 2: Estimate your total study hours honestly

Providers generally do not publish official study-hour figures, so treat any "X hours guaranteed" claim you see elsewhere with suspicion. What you can do is build your own estimate from the diagnostic:

  • Strong domains (diagnostic comfortably right): review-only. Small allocation.
  • Partial domains (right answers but shaky reasoning): moderate allocation.
  • New domains (guessing): the bulk of your hours, weighted further by each domain's percentage on the blueprint.

Then count your real weekly hours. Not aspirational hours — hours that survived last month. Look at your last three or four weeks and ask what you actually could have studied. For most working adults the honest number is 4–10 hours a week. Writing down 15 and delivering 6 does not produce a faster pass; it produces a schedule you abandon in week three. Step 3: Set the exam date — or let the maths set it

Now divide. If total estimated hours ÷ weekly hours ≤ weeks until your booked exam, you have a viable plan. If not, something must give: more weekly hours, a later exam date, or (rarely wise) trimmed coverage.

If you have not booked yet, work the equation the other way: pick the exam date the maths supports, then add a buffer week for life's interruptions. A booked date is worth having early — a real deadline anchors the whole schedule and stops prep drifting indefinitely — but book the date the numbers justify, not the one that flatters you.

A worked example. A career-changer preparing for a fundamentals-level cloud exam scores well on general IT questions but guesses on everything cloud-specific. She estimates 55 hours of work and can honestly commit 5 hours a week: 11 weeks, plus one buffer week. She books an exam 12 weeks out. A colleague sitting the same exam with two years of hands-on exposure estimates 20 hours at 5 a week and books for 5 weeks. Same exam, same template — completely different, and correctly different, schedules.

Step 4: Lay out the phases

A runway divides naturally into three phases. As a rule of thumb, give them roughly 60%, 25% and 15% of your weeks:

  1. Coverage (first ~60%). Work through the syllabus domain by domain, spending your hours in proportion to the gap × weight calculation from Step 2 — biggest, heaviest gaps first, not chapter order. End every domain with a batch of practice questions on that domain alone, because testing yourself beats rereading for retention (the "testing effect" demonstrated by Roediger and Karpicke, 2006).
  2. Consolidation (next ~25%). Stop learning new material. Mix domains together, revisit earlier material on a spaced cycle, and convert weak areas found by questions into targeted review.   3. Rehearsal (final ~15%). Full-length, timed practice under exam-like conditions, followed by analysis of the results and surgical patching of whatever they expose. Keep one rule across all phases: never end a week without having retrieved something — questions answered, concepts explained from memory, blank-page summaries. Passive coverage that is never tested is the material most likely to evaporate by exam day.

Step 5: Turn phases into a weekly grid

Now make it concrete. For each week, write down:

  • Which domain(s) the week covers (from your Step 2 priority order).
  • Which sessions on which days — matched to your calendar's real shape. Protect your two or three best slots for new material and use low-energy slots for review and flashcards.
  • A checkpoint: one measurable output per week, e.g. "score ≥70% on a 20-question set from Domain 2" or "explain the three storage types from memory."

A 12-week grid for our career-changer might look like:

  • Weeks 1–4: the two heaviest new domains, one at a time; end-of-domain question sets.
  • Weeks 5–7: remaining new/partial domains; weekly mixed-question checkpoint begins.
  • Week 8: first full-length timed practice test; rebuild weeks 9–10 around its weakest domains.
  • Weeks 9–10: targeted patching plus spaced review of everything covered.
  • Week 11: second timed practice test; light review only.
  • Week 12: buffer — either exam week, or the slack that absorbs whatever went wrong in weeks 1–11.

Write the grid somewhere you will see it, and treat the checkpoints, not the hours, as the measure of progress. Three hours that end in a passed checkpoint beat six that end in a vague sense of familiarity.

Step 6: Review and repair the schedule weekly

A personalised schedule is not a contract; it is a forecast, and forecasts get updated. Every week, spend ten minutes on three questions:

  1. Did the checkpoint pass? If yes, proceed. If no, the next week absorbs the shortfall — that is what the buffer week exists for.
  2. Were the hours realistic? Two consecutive weeks of missed hours means the weekly number was fiction; lower it and re-run the Step 3 maths, moving the exam if needed. Moving a date early is planning; moving it in the final week is panic.

This weekly repair loop is what makes the schedule personalised in the useful sense: it keeps adapting to the person you turn out to be, not the person you hoped to be when you drew the grid.

Common scheduling mistakes to design out

  • Chapter-order studying. Books are ordered for narrative, not for your gaps. Your Step 2 priority order should drive the sequence.
  • All coverage, no rehearsal. Candidates routinely spend 95% of their runway reading and meet exam-format pressure for the first time on exam day. Protect the final phase.

How many weeks should I study for a certification exam?

There is no universal number, and providers generally do not publish official study-hour recommendations — the honest answer is the output of Step 3: your estimated hours divided by your real weekly capacity, plus a buffer. Should I book the exam before I start studying?
