If you last looked at VMware certification before 2024, most of what you remember is now wrong. On 15 December 2025, following Broadcom's acquisition of VMware in late 2023 and its restructuring of the education programme, the legacy certification tracks — including the famous VCP-DCV that anchored virtualisation careers for two decades — were retired. The programme has been rebuilt around VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF), with new exam codes, a new administering organisation (Broadcom's education portal) and a much smaller, more consolidated credential list.

That makes 2026 a confusing moment to be new to VMware certification: the internet is full of guides describing a ladder that no longer exists, while the current programme is young enough that even experienced admins are still orienting themselves. This article is that orientation. It explains, in order:

  1. How VMware certification worked historically — the VCTA/VCP/VCAP/VCDX level system you will still see referenced everywhere.

Why VMware certification exists at all

VMware built the software that made server virtualisation mainstream: its ESXi hypervisor and vSphere management platform have run a large share of the world's enterprise data centres for twenty years, and its portfolio grew to include software-defined networking (NSX) and cloud management and automation tooling. Because so many organisations run their most critical workloads on this stack, "can this person safely administer vSphere?" became a question employers needed a portable answer to — and VMware's certification programme was that answer. The certifications have always been vendor-specific and product-anchored: unlike a general credential in networking or security, a VMware certification attests to skill on VMware's own platform, which is precisely why infrastructure teams that run it value the credential.

Under Broadcom, that purpose is unchanged. What changed is the shape of the programme wrapped around it.

The classic level system: VCTA, VCP, VCAP, VCDX

For most of the programme's history, VMware certifications were organised on a grid: levels of difficulty crossed with tracks of technology. You will still encounter these acronyms constantly — in job adverts, on CVs, in study forums — so they are worth understanding even though the grid itself has been reorganised.

The four classic levels, from entry to summit:

  • VCTA — VMware Certified Technical Associate. The entry rung, aimed at people early in their careers or adjacent to virtualisation (support staff, operators). Associate-level exams tested fundamentals rather than hands-on administration.
  • VCP — VMware Certified Professional. The workhorse credential and by far the most widely held. A VCP said: this person can install, configure and manage the product in production. When someone says "I'm VMware certified" with no further detail, they almost always mean a VCP.
  • VCAP — VMware Certified Advanced Professional. The expert tier, split by discipline into Design exams (architecting solutions) and Deploy exams (advanced implementation and troubleshooting). VCAPs marked out senior engineers and architects.
  • VCDX — VMware Certified Design Expert. The summit, and one of the most demanding credentials in enterprise IT: candidates produced a full production-grade design and defended it before a panel. VCDX numbers were always tiny relative to VCPs, which was the point.

Crossing those levels were the tracks, each following a product family. The three you will see referenced most often:

  • Data Center Virtualization (DCV) — the vSphere track, and the programme's centre of gravity. The VCP-DCV was the default VMware certification.
  • Network Virtualization (NV) — the NSX track, covering software-defined networking and security.
  • Cloud Management and Automation (CMA) — the track for VMware's automation and cloud-operations tooling (the vRealize, later Aria, product line).

So a "VCAP-DCV Design" was an advanced-level design credential on the vSphere track; a "VCP-NV" was a professional-level NSX credential; and so on. This grid is the mental model the entire industry built up — which is why its retirement is such a significant event.

What Broadcom changed

Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in late 2023 and set about consolidating the product portfolio around two bundles: VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), the full private-cloud platform combining compute, storage, networking and management, and VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF), the vSphere-centred package. The certification programme followed the products.

The headline facts, as of 2026:

  • The legacy tracks are retired. The VCP-DCV was retired on 15 December 2025, along with other legacy VMware certification tracks, as the programme was restructured around VMware Cloud Foundation. If a guide, course or job advert treats VCP-DCV, VCP-NV or VCP-CMA as certifications you can newly earn, it is out of date.
  • New credentials centre on VCF and VVF. The professional-level lineup now consists of role-flavoured credentials against the two platform bundles (administration, architecture and support variants — detailed below), with exam codes ending in ".25".
  • Administration moved to Broadcom. Certification now lives on Broadcom's education portal, and official exam and credential pages sit under broadcom.com.

Two things the change did not do, as far as verified information goes: it did not erase the skills — the new credentials still fundamentally test vSphere, NSX and cloud-management capability, now packaged as VCF/VVF platform skills — and it did not make existing certificate holders' knowledge obsolete. The current lineup: VVF and VCF credentials

As of 2026, the professional-level Broadcom-era lineup consists of five credentials, per certification roadmaps citing Broadcom's pages:

Notice what this table encodes. The old grid crossed difficulty levels with technology tracks; the new lineup crosses platform bundles (VVF or VCF) with job roles (administrator, architect, support). Networking, storage and automation no longer live in separate tracks — they are folded into the platform credentials, because in VCF they are folded into the product.

The flagship for most candidates is the VCP-VCF Administrator (2V0-17.25), the named successor to the retired VCP-DCV. Its current exam, as of August 2026, targets VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 and validates the skills to deploy, manage and support private-cloud environments built on VCF. Per exam-prep aggregators tracking the official exam guide, the format is 60 questions in 135 minutes (the duration includes extra time for non-native English speakers), using multiple-choice and multiple-selection items, with a passing score of 300 on a scaled method and a fee listed by third-party trackers at $250 USD — all of which varies by region and revision, so confirm against the Broadcom exam guide before booking. There is no hard prerequisite exam blocking registration, though recommended training exists.

How to read a VMware exam code

VMware exam codes look cryptic but follow a pattern, and decoding them helps you date any material you find:

  • The leading digit historically signalled level: 1V0 for associate exams, 2V0 for professional, 3V0 for advanced professional. The current lineup's exams all begin 2V0.
  • The middle digits identify the subject area.
  • The suffix dates the exam: modern codes end in a two-digit year (2V0-17.25 is a 2025-generation exam), while older codes used other conventions (2V0-621, 2V0-21.20 and so on).

This matters practically because the internet — including practice-question libraries — still carries material for many generations of exams. A page about 2V0-21.23, the vSphere 8.x Professional exam, or 2V0-41.23, the NSX 4.x Professional exam, reflects the last pre-restructuring generation of the DCV and NV tracks; material with .19 or .20 suffixes, or three-digit codes like 2V0-621, is older still. Legacy-generation questions can still be useful for drilling underlying vSphere and NSX concepts — the technology skills carry forward even where the credential does not — but always anchor your actual exam preparation to the current exam guide for the code you have booked.

Mapping the old world to the new

Because so much career advice, so many job adverts and so many CVs still speak the legacy language, here is the translation, stated at the level of confidence the facts support:

  • VCP-DCV → VCP-VCF Administrator. This succession is explicit: the VCF Administrator credential is the successor to the retired VCP-DCV track. If a job advert asks for VCP-DCV today, the 2V0-17.25 exam is the current answer.
  • VCP-NV and VCP-CMA → the consolidated VCF lineup, directionally. NSX networking and Aria-style cloud management are components of VMware Cloud Foundation, so those skill sets flow into the VCF credentials — but no exact one-to-one successor mapping for the NV and CMA tracks has been verified, so treat any confident "VCP-NV is now exam X" claim you read elsewhere with caution.   • VCTA and VCDX levels. The classic associate and design-expert rungs belong to the legacy grid; what Broadcom offers above and below the professional tier going forward is best checked directly on the education portal rather than assumed from old roadmaps.

Reading job adverts in the transition period

A practical wrinkle of 2026: employers update job descriptions slower than vendors update programmes. Expect to see "VCP-DCV required" in adverts for years. Interpret such requirements as "current professional-level VMware credential, or the retired equivalent plus demonstrable experience" — and if you hold a legacy VCP, say so plainly on your CV with its track and date rather than letting a recruiter guess. Conversely, listing "VCP-VCF Administrator (2V0-17.25)" with the code spelled out helps automated CV screens that were configured before the rebrand.

Where difficulty and preparation fit (briefly)

Two questions dominate once people understand the structure, and each has its own dedicated article. The one structural observation worth making here: because the new credentials cover an integrated platform rather than a single product, their scope is broad by design — vSphere skills alone no longer cover the syllabus the way they once covered a VCP-DCV.

When you reach the practising stage, treat practice questions as instrumentation rather than answer keys: use timed sets to find which platform domains (compute, networking, storage, lifecycle management) are weakest, then return to documentation and lab work for those areas. Common misconceptions, corrected

The restructuring has spawned a steady supply of half-true claims. Four worth clearing up before you plan anything around them:

  • "VMware certifications are gone." False. The legacy tracks were retired; the programme continues under Broadcom with a consolidated credential lineup. What disappeared is the old grid, not certification itself.
  • "My old study materials are useless." Mostly false. The products the new exams cover are built from the same technologies the old tracks taught — ESXi, vSphere, NSX, cloud-management tooling — so conceptual knowledge transfers well. What does not transfer is exam-blueprint alignment: syllabus weightings, product versions and question emphasis belong to the current exam guide, which is why the guide, not old notes, must anchor final preparation.
  • "Broadcom made the exams free." Unverified. Claims to this effect circulate, but nothing we could confirm supports stating it as fact — price the exam from its official Broadcom page and treat "free VMware exams" posts with suspicion.
  • "The new credentials are just renamed old ones." Only partly true. The VCF Administrator does succeed the VCP-DCV explicitly, but the platform scope is genuinely wider: Cloud Foundation folds networking, storage and lifecycle management into one product, and the exam scope follows.

Getting started: a first-week sequence

If the structure now makes sense and you want to act on it, the logistics reduce to five steps:

  1. Identify your platform. Establish whether your organisation (or target employer) runs VMware Cloud Foundation, vSphere Foundation, or a legacy vSphere estate heading toward one of them. This single fact selects your credential line.
  2. Open the official exam page. Find your exam on Broadcom's education portal and download the current exam guide. Everything authoritative — objectives, format, fee, language options — lives there, and it overrides anything in this or any other third-party article.
  3. Audit yourself against the objectives. Read the exam guide's objective list and mark each item as "do weekly", "have done once" or "never touched". The third column is your syllabus.
