A practical VMware exam preparation workflow — confirming the right Broadcom-era exam, building lab access, choosing resources and using practice tests well.

Preparing for a VMware certification in 2026 comes down to six moves: confirm you are targeting a current Broadcom-era exam, turn the official exam guide into your syllabus, secure hands-on lab access, work through learning resources domain by domain, use practice questions to find and close gaps, and book the exam only once a timed simulation says you are ready. Everything else — courses, videos, note systems — is detail hanging off that spine.

This guide gives you the workflow and the resource choices in order. Step 1: Confirm the exam before you buy or study anything

More preparation effort is wasted at this step than any other right now. VMware certification moved under Broadcom after the late-2023 acquisition, and on 15 December 2025 the legacy tracks — including the famous VCP-DCV — were retired. The programme was rebuilt around two platform bundles: VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF).

Practical actions for this step:

  1. Go to Broadcom's official certification pages (not a cached blog post) and confirm your exam code, version and language options.
  2. Check the fee for your region. Third-party trackers list 2V0-17.25 at around $250 USD, but pricing varies by country — treat the official page as the only reliable number.
  3. Note the exam format. For 2V0-17.25 the guide describes 60 multiple-choice and multiple-selection questions in 135 minutes with a scaled passing score of 300. Formats for the other four exams were not independently verified in our research, so pull them from each exam's own guide.
  4. Check whether any training is required for your chosen exam. For 2V0-17.25 we found no verified mandatory course, only recommended training — but verify, because policies can differ per credential.

Ten careful minutes here can save you a hundred hours of studying the wrong blueprint.

Step 2: Turn the exam guide into a personal syllabus

Every current VMware exam publishes an official exam guide listing its objectives. That document — not any book, course or video series — defines what you will be asked. The preparation habit that separates efficient candidates from drifting ones is converting it into a tracking sheet on day one.

Do it like this:

  1. Copy every objective from the exam guide into a spreadsheet, one row each.
  2. Add three columns: Confidence (1–3), Lab done?, Notes/gaps.
  3. Score yourself honestly on day one. A 1 means "I could not explain this to a colleague"; a 3 means "I have done this in a real or lab environment and could troubleshoot it".
  4. Re-score every week or two. Your study time always goes to the lowest numbers first.

This matters more for VMware than for many vendors because the blueprints are broad — a platform exam reaches across compute, storage, networking, lifecycle management and availability. Without a tracker, people default to studying what they already enjoy. The tracker forces you to face the storage domain you have been avoiding.

Interpreting the objectives is a skill in itself. Verbs matter: an objective that says "configure" or "manage" is telling you a lab task is coming in question form; one that says "identify" or "describe" can be handled from documentation. Step 3: Solve the lab problem

VMware exams are written for operators. The questions that decide your result describe an environment state and ask what action produces an outcome — and the only dependable way to answer those is to have performed the workflows yourself. Hands-on practice is not an enrichment activity in VMware preparation; it is the core of it.

The honest complication in 2026 is that lab access has been in flux since the Broadcom transition, so treat lab options as things to verify rather than assume:

  • Employer environments. If you work somewhere running vSphere or VCF, this is your best option: negotiate access to a non-production cluster or a test environment. Real operational context beats any simulation.
  • Broadcom-hosted labs. VMware historically offered guided, browser-based hands-on lab environments; check Broadcom's education and lab pages for what is currently available for your exam's product version, since offerings have shifted under the new ownership.
  • A home lab with nested virtualisation. A single reasonably specified machine can run ESXi and vCenter as nested virtual machines, giving you a full practice topology on one box. Licensing is the moving part: confirm on Broadcom's site what evaluation or personal-use options currently exist, and check whether community programmes such as VMUG Advantage still bundle lab licensing before you rely on them.
  • Course-included labs. Some accredited training includes lab environments for the course duration. If you are paying for training anyway, weight options that bundle lab time.

Whichever route you take, lab with intent. Aimless clicking teaches little. Take the configure/manage objectives from your step-2 tracker and turn each into a scenario: build it, break it, fix it, and write down what surprised you. One deliberately broken lab teaches more exam-relevant judgement than five hours of tutorial-following, because troubleshooting is where the platform's real behaviour shows itself.

Step 4: Choose learning resources in the right order

There is no shortage of VMware study material; there is a shortage of current material. The retirement of the legacy tracks means an enormous back-catalogue of courses, books and videos describes exams you can no longer sit. Filter everything by one question: does this resource name my exam code and product version?

A sensible resource stack, in the order you should lean on each:

  1. The official exam guide — your syllabus, as covered in step 2. Free, authoritative, non-negotiable.
  2. Official product documentation — the reference you consult when an objective is unclear. Documentation is dense as a primary read but unbeatable for settling exactly how a feature behaves.
  3. Structured training — Broadcom-authorised courses if your budget or employer covers them, or reputable video courses that explicitly target your exam version if not. Training is the fastest way to get a coherent tour of the platform; it is not, by itself, sufficient preparation.
  4. Community content — study groups, homelab write-ups and candidate exam-experience posts. Valuable for morale and for practical lab tips; unreliable for facts. Anything that predates the December 2025 restructuring should be treated as historical background.
  5. Your own notes — the underrated resource. Writing an explanation in your own words is a form of self-testing, and the notes become your final-week review pack.

One resource discipline worth stating plainly: no third-party source outranks the exam guide. If a course spends three hours on a topic the blueprint barely mentions, follow the blueprint.

Step 5: Use practice questions to measure, not to memorise

Practice questions serve one purpose in a well-run preparation: they measure your understanding of the exam objectives so you can direct your remaining study time. Used that way, they are the highest-leverage tool in the final third of your preparation. Used as a memorisation source, they actively harm you — VMware's scenario-style questions punish pattern-matching, and memorising answers builds exactly the false confidence that fails exams.

A measurement-first routine looks like this:

  1. Start untimed, per domain. After finishing a domain in your study cycle, answer a batch of questions on it. Review every answer — including the ones you got right — and ask whether you could justify the choice to a colleague.
  2. Log misses in your tracker. A wrong answer is a gap in a specific objective. Drop your confidence score for that row and schedule lab or reading time against it.
  3. Move to timed, full-length simulation late in preparation. Once your tracker is mostly 2s and 3s, sit a full-length timed test in one sitting. The goal is stamina, pacing and an honest readiness signal.
  4. Analyse by domain, not by total score. A respectable overall score hiding one weak domain is a warning, not a comfort — exams have a way of over-sampling your weakest area.

  • Rehearse the exam's shape. For 2V0-17.25, 60 questions in 135 minutes is a comfortable pace if you keep moving — the time allocation even builds in extra time for non-native English speakers. Practise flagging hard questions and returning rather than stalling.
  • Book when your evidence says so. A sensible trigger: your timed simulations are comfortably clearing your target across every domain, not just on average. Booking a date slightly ahead of "fully ready" is fine — deadlines concentrate effort — but booking on hope is how retake fees happen.
  • Sort logistics early. Confirm your testing option (centre or online proctoring), identification requirements and rescheduling rules on the official booking flow, since these policies are set by Broadcom and its exam delivery partners, not by any study resource.

Common preparation mistakes VMware candidates make

Four failure patterns account for most avoidable VMware exam disappointments:

Studying a retired blueprint. The most 2026-specific mistake. If your study guide says VCP-DCV 2V0-21.20 and your booking says 2V0-17.25, you are preparing for the wrong exam. Always match materials to your exact exam code.

Reading instead of building. Documentation-only preparation produces candidates who recognise every term and cannot pick between two plausible actions. If your preparation log shows ten hours of reading for every hour of lab, invert the ratio for the objectives marked "configure" and "manage".

Skipping the domains you dislike. Server-background candidates dodge networking; network people dodge storage. The blueprint does not care. Your tracker exists to make the avoidance visible.

Treating practice questions as the curriculum. Questions are a thermometer, not a textbook. If a practice result surprises you, the fix is in the documentation and the lab — not in re-reading the question until you remember it.
