Here is the cleanest way to see this decision: in the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) exam you are handed live systems and told to make them work; in LPIC-1 you are handed questions and told to pick answers. One credential proves you can do the job at a keyboard under pressure, on Red Hat Enterprise Linux specifically. The other proves you understand Linux broadly, on any distribution, in writing. "Which wins" depends entirely on which kind of proof the jobs you want actually ask for.
Short answer: RHCSA wins for candidates targeting enterprise environments that run Red Hat Enterprise Linux — its 100% hands-on format on live systems is the strongest skills signal in entry-to-mid Linux certification. LPIC-1 wins for candidates who need vendor-neutral breadth, work with mixed or Debian-family distributions, or want the longest validity in the field at five years. Neither is universally better; they answer different employer questions.
Every other difference between these certifications flows from one design choice.
Red Hat's EX200 exam contains no multiple-choice questions at all. It is entirely performance-based: you work on live systems, completing real-world administration tasks, with no internet access — though product documentation is available inside the exam environment, exactly as it would be on a real server. As of August 2026, Red Hat's exam page states EX200 is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. You cannot pass by recognising the right answer; you must produce a working system. Third-party sources widely report a passing score of 210 out of 300, though Red Hat does not publish this prominently.
LPIC-1, from the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), takes the opposite bet. It requires two written exams — 101-500 and 102-500, version 5.0 — each with 60 questions (multiple-choice plus fill-in-the-blank) in 90 minutes. Nothing is performance-based. The fill-in-the-blank items do force you to actually know command names rather than recognise them, but you never touch a running system. The trade for that limitation is breadth and neutrality: LPIC-1 material is distribution-agnostic, covering concepts that apply from Debian to openSUSE, where RHCSA is unapologetically a RHEL exam.
For hiring managers, the difference reads like this: an RHCSA has demonstrably configured storage, users and services on RHEL under a clock; an LPIC-1 holder has demonstrated broad, transferable Linux knowledge. Both are legitimate signals. They are just different signals.

Two cost caveats worth flagging. First, Red Hat does not print a single global price — the $500 figure is the widely reported US list price, and regional pricing plus taxes vary, so confirm on redhat.com for your country. Second, LPI's regional pricing means LPIC-1's total cost can be meaningfully below $400 outside Tier 1 markets, which matters if you are certifying from a lower-income region.
On difficulty, resist pass-rate folklore: Red Hat publishes no pass rates, and neither does LPI publish meaningful ones for this comparison — any percentage you see quoted is invented. What can be said honestly is that they are hard in different ways. RHCSA fails people who understand concepts but fumble execution; LPIC-1 fails people who can administer their own systems but have gaps across its wide written syllabus (its 102 exam ranges across shells, scripting, administrative tasks, networking fundamentals and security).
Certification ladders matter more than single rungs, and these two climb into different buildings.
RHCSA is the gateway to Red Hat's entire programme. The next step has historically been the RHCE-level exam EX294 — now titled by Red Hat "Certified Advanced System Administrator in Ansible" following the May 2026 restructuring of the programme into five tracks (Enterprise Linux, Ansible, OpenShift, Cloud-native Applications, AI) with tiered credentials up to Red Hat Certified Architect. A current RHCSA is required to earn that Engineer-tier credential, and passing higher exams pushes your RHCSA's currency date out another three years. If containers, OpenShift or automation are in your future, RHCSA is the ticket in.
LPIC-1 leads to LPIC-2 (two further exams, requiring an active LPIC-1) and then LPIC-3, which as of August 2026 offers four specialty certifications including Security and Virtualization and Containerization. It is a coherent vendor-neutral ladder, and its five-year validity per rung makes it the cheapest track to keep current over a decade.

For RHCSA, preparation is lab time, full stop. Red Hat recommends its RH124 and RH134 courses (or the RH199 rapid track) or equivalent experience, and the skill that passes the exam is fluency: creating users, fixing storage, configuring services without reaching for a search engine, because there is no internet in the room — only the system documentation. Build a practice VM on the current RHEL base, break it, repair it, and drill against the clock.
For LPIC-1, breadth is the enemy of complacency. Even working sysadmins routinely discover blind spots across the two exams' objective lists, and the fill-in-the-blank questions punish vague recall of command syntax. Timed practice questions are the efficient diagnostic here: run a full-length simulation per exam, score yourself by topic area, and spend your remaining weeks on your two weakest domains rather than re-reading what you already know. If your target employers run Red Hat Enterprise Linux — and a large share of enterprise Linux estates do — RHCSA's hands-on format is the more persuasive credential and the gateway to Red Hat's deeper tracks, at the price of vendor lock-in and a three-year currency window. If your market is mixed-distribution, budget-sensitive or simply unknown yet, LPIC-1's vendor neutrality, regional pricing and five-year validity make it the safer opening move, at the price of a written-only format some employers weight less. Let the job adverts you want in eighteen months cast the deciding vote — and whichever you book, prepare for the exam you chose, not the one you would have preferred.
