How the two certifications are built

The structural difference matters more here than in most cert comparisons, so it deserves the first proper look.

CompTIA Linux+ is one exam: XK0-006, launched 15 July 2025, with a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, mixing multiple-choice with performance-based questions (PBQs) that simulate real tasks. Passing requires 720 on CompTIA's 100–900 scale. CompTIA recommends about 12 months of hands-on Linux experience, but nothing is enforced.

LPIC-1 is two exams: 101-500 and 102-500 (version 5.0), each with 60 questions in 90 minutes. The format is multiple-choice plus fill-in-the-blank — no simulated-task questions, but the fill-in items mean you must actually recall commands and options, not just recognise them. Passing each exam requires 500 on LPI's 200–800 scale, and you hold nothing until both are passed. There are no prerequisites.

Neither exam puts you on a live system; the fully practical route among vendor-neutral options is the Linux Foundation's LFCS, worth knowing about even though it sits outside this head-to-head.

The cost question is closer than it looks

Sticker prices land within pounds of each other in Tier 1 markets: roughly $399 for the single Linux+ voucher against $200 × 2 for LPIC-1. Three second-order effects can swing the real total:

  1. Retake exposure. Fail Linux+ and you re-buy one $399 voucher. Fail one LPIC-1 exam and you re-buy a $200 exam while your other pass still stands — LPIC-1's split structure caps the cost of a bad day.
  2. Renewal economics. Linux+ enters CompTIA's Continuing Education programme: valid three years, renewable with 50 continuing-education units plus CE fees, or by passing a newer or higher exam. LPIC-1 simply remains valid for five years. Over a decade, the LPI route involves fewer renewal events and less paperwork.
  3. Regional pricing. LPI's fees drop meaningfully in some countries; CompTIA pricing also varies by region. Where you sit the exam can matter as much as which one you pick.

Recognition: which name do employers know?

Both credentials are respected, and neither is a household name the way entry certifications in security or networking are — so calibrate expectations. The honest picture from the two providers' positioning:

  • CompTIA's brand carries weight with employers who already hire around CompTIA stacks, and Linux+ slots naturally into HR filters that recognise the vendor. Its blueprint refresh (cloud and hybrid, containers, Ansible, Python scripting) also reads as current on a CV.
  • LPI is the longest-standing vendor-neutral Linux certification body, with a tiered programme (LPIC-1 → LPIC-2 → LPIC-3 specialties) that signals a defined progression. In organisations and regions where LPI's programme is embedded, LPIC-1 is the default expectation.

Neither provider publishes pass rates or placement statistics, and no independent salary survey was verified for either credential — treat any such numbers you find elsewhere with suspicion.   • Linux+ concentrates everything into a single 90-minute session where PBQs can eat a disproportionate share of your clock. Candidates weak on applied tasks find the PBQs the choke point.
  • LPIC-1 spreads the load across two sittings but punishes vague knowledge: a fill-in-the-blank question offers no options to eliminate. If you cannot type the command, you do not score.

A useful self-test before choosing: open a terminal and, without references, write out the exact commands to create a user with a specific home directory, find every file over a given size, and add a cron entry. If you produced them from recall, LPIC-1's format holds no terror.   2. Lab everything. Both exams reward candidates who practise in a real VM, even though neither is a live-system exam — LPIC-1's fill-in questions and Linux+'s PBQs both collapse rote memorisation.
  3. Benchmark with timed questions. Historical footnote while studying: older "CompTIA Linux+ Powered by LPI" exams (LX0-103/LX0-104) still surface in second-hand study materials. Today's Linux+ (XK0-006) and LPIC-1 (version 5.0) are separate, current certifications — do not buy materials for those legacy exams by mistake, and treat anything targeting the earlier XK0-005 as outdated too.

Do I have to take the two LPIC-1 exams in order, or on the same day?

You must pass both 101-500 and 102-500 to hold LPIC-1, but they are separate bookings. Most candidates sit 101-500 first and use the result to pace their preparation for the second exam rather than attempting both in one sitting.

Is there any credit transfer between Linux+ and LPIC-1?
