How to Prepare for a Certification Exam Without a Training Course

A complete self-study method for certification exams: turn the official blueprint into a syllabus, source free materials, and benchmark with practice tests.

A course gives you three things: a syllabus, curated materials, and someone checking your progress. All three can be replaced for free — the certification body itself hands you the syllabus, its documentation supplies the material, and practice tests replace the instructor's progress checks. Self-studiers who fail usually do not fail from lack of intelligence or lack of paid tuition; they fail because they replaced only the materials and skipped the other two. This guide rebuilds all three, in order.

One assumption before we start: your exam actually permits self-study. Step 1: Make the exam blueprint your syllabus

Every serious certification publishes an exam guide, blueprint or objectives document — AWS publishes exam guides as PDFs, CompTIA publishes downloadable objectives, Microsoft lists measured skills on each exam page. This document is the single most under-used free resource in certification prep, and it is the exact scope statement the exam is written against.

Work through it like this:

  1. Download the current version from the official provider page, and check the exam code matches what you will sit. Codes change: Security+ is SY0-701 as of 2026, A+ is now 220-1201/220-1202 — studying to a superseded blueprint is the classic self-study disaster.
  2. Copy every objective into a checklist — a spreadsheet with one row per line item works well.
  3. Rate yourself 0–3 on each row (never seen it / heard of it / can explain it / can apply it). This first pass takes an hour and converts a vague "I should study" into a ranked gap list.
  4. Note the domain weightings. Blueprints state what percentage of the exam each domain carries. A 25% domain with a self-rating of 1 outranks an 8% domain rated 0.

That checklist is now your syllabus, your progress tracker, and later your revision filter. Everything else in this method hangs off it.

Step 2: Source materials for each domain

With the blueprint in hand, gather sources per domain rather than hunting for one perfect all-in-one resource:

  • Official documentation is the primary text. Vendor docs (AWS documentation, Microsoft Learn, CompTIA's objectives with their embedded example lists) are written by the people who commission the exam questions. They are dry, but they are free and authoritative.
  • Provider-made free practice material exists more often than people realise — Microsoft, for instance, publishes a free official Practice Assessment for AZ-900 plus an exam sandbox that demos the question interface. Check your provider's exam page for equivalents before paying for anything.
  • One structured secondary source (a book or reputable video series) is worth adding for narrative flow, since raw documentation does not teach in a deliberate order. Choose one; collecting five overlapping resources is procrastination wearing a productive costume.
  • A hands-on environment where the cert is practical: a free-tier cloud account, a home lab, trial software. Exams with performance-based questions — CompTIA's A+ and Security+ both include them — punish candidates who only ever read.
  • Practice questions, which get their own step below because their job is different from the other materials.

Step 3: Build the schedule a course would have imposed

A course's real discipline value is its calendar: lessons happen whether you feel like it or not. Recreate that by working backwards from a provisional exam date and assigning blueprint domains to weeks, heaviest-weighted and weakest-rated first.   • Book, or at least price and diary, the exam early. Self-studiers have no course end-date, so timelines drift indefinitely. A date on the calendar is the forcing function a course would otherwise provide.
  • Schedule reviews of old domains, not just first passes of new ones. The research on distributed practice is unambiguous: spaced study reliably beats cramming the same material in one block (Cepeda et al., 2006). A plan that never revisits week one's material leaks it.

Step 4: Study by retrieval, not rereading

Here is where self-studiers most often copy the worst habit of bad courses: passive consumption. Reading a chapter, watching a video, highlighting a PDF — all feel like progress and store little. The learning-science literature is blunt about this. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 work on test-enhanced learning found that practising recall beats restudying for long-term retention, and Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review rated practice testing and distributed practice as the highest-utility study techniques while rating rereading and highlighting low.

Practically, that means ending every study session by closing the source and producing something from memory: answer questions, write a summary blank-page style, explain the concept aloud, or update your 0–3 blueprint ratings honestly. Step 5: Use practice tests as your instructor

Without a tutor, practice questions are your only external feedback loop, and they do their best work when you treat them diagnostically rather than as a score to farm:

  1. Baseline early. After your first pass through the material, take a set of questions per domain. The point is not the score; it is finding out where your self-ratings were optimistic.
  2. Analyse every miss. For each wrong answer, tag the blueprint objective it maps to and classify the failure: knowledge gap, misread question, or plausible-distractor trap. Three wrong answers in one domain is a study instruction, not a disappointment.
  3. Retarget, then retest. Study the weak domains your analysis surfaced, then confirm with fresh questions — not the same ones, which would only measure your memory of the answers. Memorising specific questions and answers actively undermines you, because the live exam will phrase things differently and often draws on unscored pilot items and multiple exam forms.
  4. Simulate before you book. In the final stretch, take at least one full-length, timed sitting under exam conditions. Pacing is a skill separate from knowledge: Security+ allows a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, and Cloud Practitioner gives you 65 questions in 90 minutes — you want to discover your pace problem at your desk, not at the test centre.

One scoring note that spares self-studiers a lot of anxiety: certification scores are usually scaled, not percentages. AWS scores from 100–1,000 with a 700 pass mark on Cloud Practitioner; CompTIA uses a 100–900 scale. Scaling equates different exam forms of slightly different difficulty, and some questions (15 of 65 on AWS exams) are unscored pilots. This is why your practice percentage and your real scaled score never quite line up, and why "felt" performance on the day can mislead.

Step 6: Borrow other people's structure without buying it

The last thing a course provides is other humans. Free substitutes exist: study groups on Reddit and Discord for most major certs, provider community forums, and colleagues sitting the same exam. Use them for three things — explaining concepts to others (which doubles as retrieval practice), sanity-checking your interpretation of murky objectives, and accountability check-ins. Be sceptical of two things in communities: circulating "real exam questions", which violate provider policies and teach you nothing durable, and other people's study-hour claims, which providers themselves do not publish and which vary wildly with background.

Common self-study failure modes

  • Studying the material instead of the blueprint. If a topic is not in the objectives, it is not on the exam. If it is in the objectives, it can be — however boring the line item looks.
  • The eternal first pass. Covering all domains once, thinly, then starting over rather than testing and targeting.
  • Resource hoarding. Every new PDF added after week two is usually avoidance.
  • No exam date. Preparation without a deadline expands to fill forever.
  • Confusing recognition with recall. "I know this when I see it" is precisely the ability the exam does not test.
