How Online Certification Exams Work

An online certification exam is the same exam you would sit at a test centre — same questions, same time limit, same pass mark — delivered to your own computer while a remote proctor watches you through your webcam. Booking works much like a test-centre booking, with one big difference: instead of choosing a location, you choose only a date and time, and online slots typically run far beyond office hours because no physical building has to be open. One detail that matters more online than in person: the name on your registration must match your identification exactly. Stage 3: Exam-day check-in — ID, room scan, lockdown

Check-in is the part of the pipeline with no test-centre equivalent, and it is where the online experience feels most unfamiliar. Although details vary by programme, the verified CompTIA/Pearson VUE process illustrates the standard shape:

  1. Launch and identity check. You start the exam software at your appointment time and present your original ID to the webcam for verification against your registration name.

Stage 4: Sitting the exam — how the monitoring actually works

While you test, you are monitored continuously.
