How to Prepare Your Computer for an Online Exam

A practical technical checklist for remote exams — system test, bandwidth, webcam, background apps and secure browser — done days before you sit.

A remote exam can be lost before a single question appears — by an operating-system update that reboots the machine mid-check-in, a corporate laptop whose security software blocks the secure browser, or a Wi-Fi connection that tests fine on Sunday and collapses when the whole street is on video calls Monday morning. The good news: nearly every technical failure in an online proctored exam is preventable with an hour of setup done in the days before, not the minutes before.

This is that setup, as a working checklist. It covers the official system test, hardware, internet, and the software conflicts that cause most problems. Step 1: Run the official system test — on the real machine, days early

Every major delivery platform publishes a system test, and Pearson VUE requires one before an OnVUE exam. It checks your webcam, microphone, internet speed and whether the secure browser runs on your machine. Three rules make it meaningful:

  1. Use the exact computer, network, room and time of day you will test with. A pass on your work laptop in the office says nothing about your personal laptop at home at 9 a.m.
  2. Run it at least several days out. If it fails, you want time to fix hardware, change rooms, or in the worst case rebook — not a panicked morning.
  3. Re-run it after any change — a new OS update, different router, borrowed webcam.

If the system test will not pass on your machine at all (common on employer-managed laptops — see step 4), that is your cue to arrange a different computer now.

Step 2: Meet the hardware and internet minimums with margin

Published minimums are genuinely minimal. CompTIA's online-testing requirements, a representative example, specify at least 1 Mbps upload and download and a webcam of at least 640×480 resolution at 10 frames per second. Most modern laptops and connections clear these easily — but "minimum" is the level at which the platform functions, not the level at which you stop worrying. Practical margin looks like this:

  • Internet: run a speed test at your exam-day time. Upload speed matters as much as download — you are streaming webcam video to the proctor for the whole session. If you can, plug in an ethernet cable; a wired connection removes the single most common failure point. If you must use Wi-Fi, test from the exact chair you will sit in.
  • Webcam and microphone: built-in laptop hardware is usually fine. Confirm both work in a plain video app before trusting the system test, and clean the lens — the proctor needs to read your ID through it.   • Power: a laptop should be plugged in, not on battery. Check the charger actually charges.
  • One screen only: policies such as CompTIA's ban extra monitors and additional plugged-in computers in the workspace. Unplug the external monitor at the wall the night before — "connected but switched off" can still fail a room scan.

Step 3: Reduce your network's competition

Your bandwidth is shared with everything else in the house. For the exam window:

  • Ask the household to stay off streaming, gaming and large downloads.
  • Disconnect other devices you control from the Wi-Fi — TVs, consoles, tablets quietly updating.
  • Pause any cloud backup or sync service (photo backups are notorious upload hogs).
  • Restart your router the day before, not the hour before.

None of this is required by any provider; all of it is cheap insurance against the dropout scenario whose consequences are serious enough to have their own article.

Step 4: Clear the software conflicts

The secure browser wants to be the only thing running, and it will object — sometimes by refusing to launch — to software that could capture your screen, pop up messages, or interfere with monitoring. Before check-in:

  • Close everything. Not minimised — quit. Browsers, chat apps, email clients, media players.
  • Kill notifications. Enable your operating system's focus/do-not-disturb mode so nothing pops over the exam.
  • Stop auto-updates. Install pending OS updates two or three days before the exam so nothing forces a restart on the day, then check again the night before.
  • Look at the system tray/menu bar. Screen-recording tools, clipboard managers, remote-access software and virtual machine tools are classic silent conflicts — quit them.
  • Beware the work laptop. Corporate VPNs, endpoint security and admin restrictions frequently block secure browsers, and you may not have the rights to fix it. If the system test struggles on a managed machine, switch to a personal computer rather than gambling.

A useful habit: restart the computer an hour before check-in and open nothing except what the exam requires. A fresh boot clears most lurking processes for free.

Step 5: Stage the non-computer tech

Two devices sit at the edge of the setup. Your phone must usually be reachable in case the proctor needs to contact you, but outside your workspace — CompTIA's policy phrases it as nearby but out of the work area, and the desk itself must be clear of books, paper and pens. And since scratch paper is off the desk, note that some programmes (CompTIA included) provide a built-in digital whiteboard instead — worth knowing before you reach for a pen out of habit.

The 48-hour checklist

Run this two days out, then skim it again on the morning:

  • [ ] Official system test passed on the exam machine, network and room
  • [ ] OS updates installed; no restart pending
  • [ ] Speed test comfortably above your programme's minimum, upload included
  • [ ] Ethernet connected, or Wi-Fi tested from the exam seat
  • [ ] Webcam and microphone confirmed in a live video call
  • [ ] External monitors and spare computers unplugged
  • [ ] Laptop charger working; power cable at the desk
  • [ ] Do-not-disturb on; background and startup apps closed
  • [ ] Cloud sync and backups paused; household warned off the bandwidth
  • [ ] Phone charged, on silent, near the room but off the desk

If every box ticks, the technology is done and the remaining variable is you. That part responds to rehearsal the same way the tech does: a timed run in an online practice-test simulation on the very machine you will test with doubles as both revision and a final shakedown of your setup.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use the same computer I ran the system test on?

Yes, treat that as fixed. The system test validates a specific combination of machine, software and network; switching computers afterwards silently invalidates the result. If you must change machines, re-run the test on the new one immediately.

Is Wi-Fi good enough, or do I need ethernet?

Wi-Fi that comfortably passes a speed test from your exam seat is acceptable — plenty of candidates test on it. Ethernet is simply more predictable, because it is immune to interference and other devices roaming the network. If a cable is practical, use it.

Can I take an online exam on a work laptop?

Sometimes, but it is the riskiest option. Managed devices often carry VPNs, monitoring agents and admin locks that conflict with secure exam browsers, and you may be unable to change them. Run the system test early; at the first sign of trouble, plan on a personal machine.

Do tablets or second monitors work for online exams?

Plan around a single laptop or desktop with one screen. Programmes such as CompTIA explicitly prohibit additional monitors and extra computers in the workspace, and secure browsers are built for desktop operating systems — check your specific programme's requirements page for supported devices.

Setup is a one-hour job, not a background worry
