How to Prepare for a Computer-Based Certification Exam

Computer-based certification exams behave differently from paper tests. Learn the on-screen format, navigation and flagging tools, and how to train with timed simulations.

The first time most candidates see their certification exam's real interface is the moment the clock starts. That is a strange way to meet the tool you will spend ninety high-stakes minutes inside. The questions themselves get months of study; the screen that delivers them — the timer, the flag button, the review grid, the next/previous controls — usually gets none.

Preparing for a computer-based test (CBT) therefore has two halves: learning the material, and learning the format. This article covers the second half — how the on-screen experience differs from paper, what the interface actually lets you do, and how to train those mechanics with timed simulations so that nothing about the screen surprises you on the day. How is a computer-based exam different from a paper exam?

A computer-based exam presents one question (or one small set) per screen, keeps the official time visibly counting down, and gives you software tools — mark-for-review flags, a question navigator, sometimes a strike-through or calculator — instead of a pencil and margin. Your habits from paper tests, like scanning the whole paper first or scribbling working next to a question, either change form or disappear entirely.

The practical differences worth internalising:

  • You see one question at a time. There is no flipping through the booklet to gauge the paper's overall difficulty. Your sense of pace has to come from the question counter and timer, not from a stack of remaining pages.
  • The timer is always on screen. For some people that is reassuring; for others it feeds anxiety. Either way, it is the exam's single most useful instrument if you have practised reading it calmly.
  • Navigation may be restricted. Many linear exams let you move back and forth freely and review at the end. Some formats do not — certain adaptive or section-locked designs prevent returning to earlier questions. Check your specific programme's exam guide before you build a review strategy around backtracking, because a flag-and-return system is useless in an exam that forbids returning.
  • Rough work happens in provided tools. Test centres typically issue an erasable board or the software provides a digital whiteboard rather than free paper. Practising your working on a constrained surface — or on screen — is genuinely different from a margin.
  • Question types go beyond ticking boxes. Alongside single-answer multiple choice, computer-based certification exams commonly use multiple-response items ("choose TWO"), drag-and-drop ordering or matching, and performance-based questions that simulate a task. CompTIA's current A+ exams (220-1201 and 220-1202), for example, mix multiple-choice, drag-and-drop and performance-based items within a 90-question, 90-minute paper.

None of these differences make the exam harder. They make it different, and unfamiliarity is what costs marks.

Learn your exam's interface before exam day

Every major testing programme documents its delivery format, and several provide ways to see the interface in advance. Treat this as a required study task, not a curiosity.

Read the official exam guide for format details

The exam guide or candidate handbook tells you the question count, duration, question types and navigation rules. It also often explains scoring mechanics that change how you should behave on screen. Amazon Web Services' exam guides, for instance, state that unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and that there is no penalty for guessing — which means the correct on-screen habit for an AWS exam is to answer every question, flag the uncertain ones, and never leave a blank. Other programmes differ, so verify yours rather than assuming.

Use official demos and tutorials where they exist

Some providers publish interface previews. Microsoft, for example, offers an exam sandbox alongside its free Practice Assessments for exams such as Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), letting you click through the real question types before test day. Pearson VUE, which delivers exams for many certification programmes, typically shows a short tutorial before the exam clock starts — but exam day is a bad time for your first look. If your provider offers any preview, take it early in your preparation, not the night before.

Know the three controls that matter

Whatever the vendor's styling, most linear CBT interfaces come down to three controls you must be fluent with:

  1. Next/Previous — how you move. Confirm whether "Next" locks in your answer or merely advances the screen.
  2. Flag / Mark for review — your substitute for a pencilled question mark in the margin. Flagged questions stay answered (or blank) but are highlighted for the review stage.
  3. The review screen or navigator — a grid showing every question's status: answered, unanswered, flagged. This is where you spend your final minutes, and it is the tool paper-trained candidates most often fail to exploit.

Train the format with timed on-screen simulations

Knowing the interface intellectually is not the same as being fluent in it under time pressure. Fluency comes from rehearsal, and the rehearsal that transfers best is a full-length, timed, on-screen practice test — the same medium, the same clock discipline, the same one-question-at-a-time rhythm.

There is solid learning-science backing for practising by answering questions at all: Roediger and Karpicke's research on the testing effect found that practising retrieval beats simply restudying material for long-term retention. But for CBT preparation specifically, the conditions of practice matter as much as the practice itself. A candidate who has only ever quizzed themselves from flashcards or a printed question bank has trained recall, not format.

A practical simulation programme looks like this:

  1. Early preparation: untimed, on-screen questions. Get used to reading questions on a monitor instead of paper. Screen reading is measurably different — you cannot annotate the text, so you must build the habit of mentally isolating what the question actually asks.
  2. Mid preparation: timed blocks. Do sets of 20–30 questions against a proportional clock. Practise the mechanical loop: read, answer, flag if unsure, move on. The goal is to make flagging reflexive rather than agonising.
  3. Final weeks: at least two full-length, strictly timed simulations. Same question count, same duration as your real exam, no pauses. Sit at a desk, not on a sofa. Afterwards, analyse the results by domain to find weak areas — a simulation is diagnostic, not just rehearsal — and never re-run the same questions until you are memorising answers rather than testing understanding.

One caution: a practice score is a guide, not a prophecy. Real certification exams often use scaled scoring and may include unscored pilot questions — AWS exams, for instance, include 15 unscored items among 65 — so your felt performance and your official score can diverge. Use simulations to measure readiness trends, not to predict an exact result.

Build an on-screen pacing and flagging system

Because a CBT shows you the timer and a question counter continuously, you can pace yourself with simple arithmetic rather than guesswork. Before exam day, compute your checkpoints: on a 90-question, 90-minute exam, you should be near question 30 at the 60-minutes-remaining mark. Rehearse checking the clock at fixed intervals — say, every 15 questions — rather than after every question, which burns attention and feeds nerves.

Pair pacing with a one-pass-plus-review structure:

  • Pass one: answer everything you can answer confidently at normal speed. Select your best current answer on uncertain questions (where your programme has no guessing penalty, a selected guess strictly beats a blank), flag them, and keep moving.
  • Review pass: open the navigator, go straight to flagged questions, and spend your remaining time only there. Resist re-reading questions you answered confidently.

Common CBT mistakes first-timers make

  • Meeting the interface for the first time on exam day. The tutorial minutes before the exam are for confirmation, not discovery.
  • Building a review strategy without checking navigation rules. If your exam locks answered questions or sections, flag-and-return does not exist for you — read the exam guide first.
  • Practising only on paper or flashcards. You end up trained for a medium you will never be tested in.
  • Ignoring non-multiple-choice item types. Performance-based and drag-and-drop questions consume far more time per item; if your exam includes them and your practice did not, your pacing model is wrong.
  • Leaving blanks on exams with no guessing penalty. On AWS exams, an unanswered question is simply a wrong one. Confirm your own programme's rule and act on it.
  • Treating the on-screen timer as an enemy. Candidates who rehearsed with a visible countdown report it as a pacing instrument; candidates who did not often find it a distraction. This is trainable.

A readiness checklist for the on-screen format

Run through this in your final week — the broader logistics of that week are laid out day-by-day in what to do the week before a certification exam:

  • I know my exam's question count, duration, and question types from the official exam guide.
  • I know whether I can move backwards and review, or whether navigation is restricted.
  • I know my programme's policy on unanswered questions and guessing.
  • I have completed at least two full-length, timed, on-screen simulations at a desk.
  • I have a pacing checkpoint plan (question number vs time remaining) memorised.
  • Flagging uncertain questions and moving on feels automatic, not stressful.
  • I know what rough-work tool I will have (erasable board or digital whiteboard) and have practised without free paper.

If every box is ticked, the format holds no surprises — which frees the whole of your attention for the only thing that should be hard on exam day: the questions.

Make the screen the least of your worries

Content knowledge decides whether you can pass; format fluency decides whether you perform to your knowledge. The candidates who walk out disappointed despite knowing the material are very often the ones who lost time fighting navigation, froze at an unfamiliar question type, or ran out of clock because they had never paced against a live timer. All of that is preventable in a couple of weeks of deliberate, on-screen, timed rehearsal. Study hard — then practise the way you will be tested.
