Vendor exam refresh cycles explained — how often CompTIA, AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud revise exams, and how fresh your study materials need to be.
Short answer: study materials should be revised whenever the exam they target is revised — and for the big IT certification programmes that means roughly every three years for CompTIA and AWS exam versions, continuous smaller updates on Microsoft's roughly annual review rhythm, and rolling refreshes at Google Cloud. A book or course untouched for more than about eighteen months deserves scrutiny; one older than a full vendor cycle is probably targeting a retired exam.
Between mid-2024 and mid-2026 alone, CompTIA replaced A+, Linux+, PenTest+, Network+ and CySA+ versions and renamed CASP+ to SecurityX; AWS renamed SysOps to CloudOps, retired its Machine Learning Specialty and refreshed its Security Specialty; and Microsoft retired around a dozen role-based certifications in favour of AI-centred successors. Materials that track cycles like these have a real shelf life — this article maps the cadences so you can judge any resource's age against its vendor's clock.
CompTIA runs numbered exam versions on an approximately three-year rhythm, and its own pages say so: the Security+ page notes retirement comes "usually three years after launch". Recent history bears it out — A+ moved from the 220-1101/1102 series to 220-1201/1202 in March 2025, Network+ from N10-008 to N10-009 in June 2024, PenTest+ to PT0-003 in December 2024, and CySA+ launched CS0-004 in June 2026 while CS0-003 sunsets through late 2026 and early 2027. SY0-701 remains the current Security+ as of August 2026, with a successor expected on the usual cadence but not yet announced — treat any material claiming to cover a successor code with suspicion.
Practical rule: CompTIA-focused materials should be substantially rewritten for each new exam code, so expect a major edition roughly every three years, and check the code on the cover against the current one before buying.
AWS exam guides carry version codes too (CLF-C02 since September 2023, SAA-C03 since August 2022), and full revisions arrive on a multi-year rhythm. But AWS also changes its portfolio between versions: the SysOps Administrator exam was renamed and updated to CloudOps Engineer (SOA-C03) in September 2025, the Machine Learning Specialty retired in March 2026, the Security Specialty moved to SCS-C03 in late 2025, and a Machine Learning Engineer update (MLA-C02) opens registration in September 2026. AWS additionally makes smaller in-place changes, such as displaying abbreviated service names in questions. Good AWS materials therefore need not just a per-version rewrite but interim patches when services rename or question types change — the newer ordering, matching and case-study formats debuted on the AI Practitioner and ML Engineer Associate exams in 2024.
Microsoft works differently: exam codes usually persist while their content is revised in place, with dated "last updated" stamps on each certification page — AZ-104's content, for instance, shows a 2026 update. Role-based certifications also expire after one year, renewed by a free online assessment, which keeps certified people on current content. And Microsoft periodically restructures wholesale: through 2025–2026 it retired MS-900, DP-203, DP-100, AI-102, AZ-204 and (on 31 August 2026) AZ-500, replaced the AI-900 exam with AI-901, and introduced AI-focused successors. For material buyers this means Microsoft-aligned resources need rolling updates — a course last touched a year ago may already lag several in-place revisions, and one recommending a retired exam is worse than stale.
Google Cloud exams carry no version codes at all, which makes staleness harder to spot. Refreshes are announced on the certification pages instead: as of 2026 the Cloud Digital Leader page notes a new exam version live "as of August 12", the Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam has been updated for the transition from Vertex AI toward the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and several pages flag updates for product renames. Because Google renames products frequently, Google Cloud study materials age fastest of the four ecosystems in terminology terms; anything a couple of years old will likely describe products by superseded names even where concepts still hold.
A defensible buying standard, given those cycles:
Note the asymmetry: vendors update exams every one to three years, but good materials update more often than that, because they must also absorb errata, retired-topic removals and product renames mid-cycle.
Certification exams are validity instruments: they only mean something if they test current practice. Cloud platforms ship changes continuously, so their exams drift out of date fastest; hardware-and-fundamentals exams like A+ drift slower, which is why a three-year cycle suffices there. Vendors also stagger retirements to protect candidates mid-preparation — CompTIA typically overlaps old and new versions for months (CS0-003 and CS0-004 are both live through late 2026), AWS publishes last-exam dates well ahead, and Microsoft posts retirement warnings on certification pages. Those overlap windows are exactly when stale materials do the most damage, because both versions are legitimately bookable and a resource may not say which one it serves.

Do all certification exams change every three years?
No. Three years is CompTIA's stated norm and AWS versions run on similar multi-year rhythms, but Microsoft revises exam content in place on a much faster rolling basis, and Google Cloud refreshes named exams without version codes. Always check the specific programme's page rather than assuming a universal cycle.
Does my certification become invalid when the exam version changes?
No. Passing an exam grants the credential under its own validity rules — CompTIA CE-track and AWS certifications run three years from your pass date, Microsoft role-based certifications renew annually for free, and Google Cloud certifications last two years (Professional) or three (Foundational and Associate) — regardless of later exam-version changes.
Is a slightly old book useless if the concepts haven't changed?
Not useless, but risky as a primary resource. Fundamentals age slowly; objective weightings, product names and newly added topics age quickly, and it is the new material you will not know you are missing. Pair any older text with the current objectives document and a current question source.
How do I find out when my exam version retires?

The refresh cycle is not trivia — it is the context that makes a publication date meaningful. A 2024 study guide is current for one exam and obsolete for another, purely because of where each vendor is in its cycle. Before spending money or study hours, take two minutes to establish the current exam version and its launch date, then hold every resource to it. Materials that advertise their version and update history are, not coincidentally, usually the ones maintained well enough to deserve your time.
