Here is an uncomfortable finding from the learning-science literature: the study methods most candidates spend most of their hours on are among the least effective ones available. Dunlosky and colleagues' influential 2013 review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rated common techniques by utility — and practice testing and distributed (spaced) practice came out as the highest-utility techniques, while rereading and highlighting, the default behaviour of almost every certification candidate, rated low.
That gap between what feels productive and what actually builds retention is the reason "evidence-based" belongs in the name of your study plan. This article takes the three findings with the strongest research support — retrieval practice, spacing, and honest self-testing against feedback — and turns them into a complete, buildable plan: what goes in it, how the weeks are phased, how sessions are structured, and how to tell whether it is working. Three findings do most of the work. Understand them once and every design decision below will make sense.
Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments on test-enhanced learning showed that practising recall — closing the book and forcing your memory to produce the answer — beat restudying the same material for long-term retention. The act of retrieving strengthens memory in a way that re-exposure does not, even though rereading feels smoother and more reassuring. That subjective smoothness is precisely the trap: fluency with a page is not the same as the ability to produce its contents in an exam room. Cepeda, Pashler and colleagues' 2006 quantitative synthesis of distributed-practice research found that spaced study reliably outperforms massed study — the same total hours produce more durable memory when they are spread over time than when they are bunched together. Forgetting a little between sessions and then re-retrieving is not a failure of the plan; it is the mechanism. The design rule: material must be revisited at growing intervals, so the calendar — not your mood — decides what you review today.
Candidates are poor judges of their own readiness, and exam mechanics make intuition even less reliable: on scaled-score exams a passing score is not a percentage of questions answered correctly, and on exams with unscored pilot items — AWS's exam guides, for instance, state that 15 of 65 questions are unscored — your felt performance and your actual score can diverge. The design rule: the plan must generate objective evidence of progress, through scored practice against the official objectives, so decisions like "am I ready to book?" rest on data rather than confidence.
An evidence-based plan is built on three inputs. Gathering them is the first work session, not a preliminary you skip.
The official exam blueprint. Download the current exam objectives from the certification body — the exact list of testable items, usually with domain weightings. A baseline reading of where you stand. Go through the blueprint and mark every objective line green (could answer questions on this today), amber (partially familiar), or red (unknown). A realistic weekly hour count. Count the hours you can genuinely sustain, not the hours you can imagine on an ambitious Sunday. Note that no major provider publishes an official "hours required" figure for its exams, so treat any such number you meet online as folklore; your baseline and your weekly capacity, not a borrowed total, determine your timeline.

Whatever your timeline, an evidence-based plan divides it into three phases with different jobs. As a rough guide, give the first phase about half your total time, the second about a third, and keep the remainder for the final phase — shifting weight toward phase one when your baseline is mostly red, and toward phases two and three when you start from experience.

Phase 2 sessions also start mixing domains rather than reviewing one at a time. Certification exams interleave topics freely — question 12 is networking, question 13 is cryptography — so practising retrieval in mixed order trains the discrimination the exam demands, and stops the false mastery that comes from always knowing which chapter today's questions belong to.
A common worry at this point: "review sessions feel harder than learning did." They should. Effortful retrieval after partial forgetting is the condition under which spacing does its work. A review session where you struggle and then correct yourself has moved you further than a smooth reread ever would.
The final phase changes the unit of work from the topic to the exam. Now you take full-length, timed practice tests under realistic conditions — the full question count, the real time limit, no notes, no pausing — and mine each one for information:

Plans fail at the session level more often than at the calendar level, so give the hour itself a structure:
Work in focused intervals with genuine breaks between them. The commonly taught format here is the Pomodoro Technique — Francesco Cirillo's system, typically taught as short fixed work intervals separated by brief breaks — though the exact interval length matters far less than the discipline of single-tasking within it. An evidence-based plan is a feedback loop, not a fixed timetable. Once a week, spend fifteen minutes on three questions:
This loop is also your booking instrument. When consecutive full-length, timed practice tests score comfortably above the passing standard across all domains — remembering that scaled passing scores like 700 or 750 are not percentages — you have objective grounds to book. Collecting resources instead of retrieving. Three courses and two books do not triple your learning; they triple your input hours at the expense of retrieval hours. One primary resource plus the official documentation is almost always enough.
Running spacing on materials, not memory. Rereading chapter summaries on a spaced schedule is still rereading. What must be spaced is the retrieval attempt — the closed-book question, the card, the blank-page explanation.
Letting green topics leave the plan. Objectives you knew at baseline still decay. They need rare, light reviews — but zero reviews means rediscovering in week nine that your strongest domain has quietly gone soft.
Marathon sessions as a virtue. The spacing literature is unambiguous that distributing hours beats massing them, so a six-hour Saturday binge is worth less than the same hours spread across the week — and it carries a fatigue cost besides. Confusing question familiarity with readiness. If your practice scores climb because you recognise the questions, the number is measuring your memory of the question bank, not your command of the objectives. Rotate question sets, and judge readiness on questions you have not seen.
