Is a DevOps Certification Worth It?

When a DevOps certification actually pays off versus experience and a portfolio — a sceptic's framework covering cost, time, hiring signal and who should skip it.

"Certs are for people who can't do the job." Every DevOps forum thread on this question contains some version of that line — usually from an engineer with ten years' experience, posted above a reply from a career-changer who got their first interview because a certification got them past a CV screen. Both are describing something true. The worth of a DevOps certification is not a property of the certification; it is a property of your situation.

Short answer: a DevOps certification is worth it when it substitutes for evidence you cannot otherwise show — early career, a stack change, an employer that filters on credentials — and largely redundant when your work history already proves the same skills. For most engineers the honest answer is "one or two, at the right moments", not "none" and not "a collection".

What are you actually buying?

Strip the marketing and a certification purchase contains four things:

  • A filter pass. Recruiters and applicant-tracking systems screen on keywords. A certification is a machine-readable claim that survives a six-second CV scan in a way "extensive Kubernetes experience" does not.
  • A forcing function. An exam date with money attached makes structured study happen. Plenty of engineers privately admit the deadline was worth more than the badge.
  • A verified floor. Hands-on, performance-based exams — the kind delivered in live environments rather than as multiple choice — genuinely verify a minimum skill level, which is why they carry more hiring signal than trivia-style tests. Multiple-choice certs verify less, and hiring managers discount them accordingly.
  • Vocabulary and coverage. Studying a well-designed syllabus fills gaps that day-job repetition never touches.

What you are not buying: a salary guarantee, a job guarantee, or a substitute for shipped work. No credible source publishes a causal "this cert adds $X" figure for DevOps credentials, and any article quoting one is guessing. DevOps roles do pay well in general — Glassdoor listed US DevOps engineer average total pay at roughly $145,000 as of August 2026, with other trackers (Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Built In) in the $122,000–$134,000 range — but those are figures for the role, which pays for experience, location and scope, not for a badge. Correlation between certified engineers and higher pay is real; causation is unproven.

The cost side, done honestly

The exam fee is the visible cost and rarely the largest one. A full accounting:

  • Fees. Real 2026 examples span a wide range: HashiCorp's Terraform Associate runs $70.50 USD plus taxes, the CNCF's hands-on Kubernetes exams are $445 USD each, and cloud vendors' professional-tier DevOps exams sit between (check current prices on the provider's own page — they change, and several widely-quoted figures are stale).
  • Retake exposure. This quietly changes the maths. CNCF's performance-based exams include one free retake and simulator sessions; most cloud vendor exams include none, so a failed attempt is a second full fee. The identical study effort is a cheaper bet on some exams than others.
  • Time. The dominant cost. There is no honest universal study-hours number — it depends on how much of the syllabus your job already exercises — but the hours come from somewhere, and the alternative use of those hours (building something public, contributing to tooling, interview practice) is the true comparator.
  • The renewal treadmill. Modern DevOps certs mostly expire in two years, and CNCF renewal means a full retake. "Is it worth it?" is really "is it worth it every two years?" — a question that kills the case for collecting credentials you will not maintain.

Certification vs experience: the false binary

The debate is usually framed as cert or experience, which misreads how hiring works. Interviews are won on experience and portfolio; interviews are granted on legible signals — and that is the narrow slot where certifications operate.

Think of it as three gates:

  1. The screen (ATS, recruiter): certifications matter most here, especially where the screener is not technical.
  2. The interview: your projects, incidents and design judgement matter; the cert is at best an opening topic.
  3. The offer: scope and demonstrated impact set the number, which is why no badge reliably moves it.

So the practical question is never "cert or portfolio?" — you need the portfolio regardless. It is "does my portfolio currently fail at gate one?" A GitHub full of real pipeline code fails gate one at plenty of companies for a simple reason: nobody at gate one reads code. A certification is legible to people who cannot evaluate your work directly. Once you are past the stage of your career where non-technical gatekeepers decide your fate — strong network, inbound recruiting, referrals — that legibility is worth much less, and the sceptics' argument mostly wins.

A decision framework: score your own situation

Answer these six questions; tally the yeses.

  1. Do you have under three years of relevant production experience?
  2. Are you trying to change stacks or domains (say, sysadmin to platform engineering) where your job history does not match the target role?
  3. Do your target employers — consultancies, enterprises, government, vendor partners — explicitly list certifications in job specs or need them for partner-tier headcounts?
  4. Are you applying cold (no referral network) into a crowded market?
  5. Would the exam you are considering be hands-on/performance-based rather than multiple choice?
  6. Will your employer pay the fee or study time?

4–6 yeses: a certification is clearly worth it — pick the one that matches your stage on the DevOps certification roadmap. 2–3: worth it selectively; take exactly one exam that closes your biggest legibility gap, and put the remaining energy into visible work. 0–1: skip it for now; your bottleneck is not credentials, and the study hours will return more as portfolio or interview preparation.

Two miniature cases show the spread. A support engineer with eighteen months' experience, applying cold to enterprise employers, scores five — for her, a respected hands-on credential converts invisible competence into interviews and is plainly worth the fee. A staff engineer with eight years of production Kubernetes, hired by referral for a decade, scores one — for him the same exam is an expensive weekend that proves nothing his reputation has not already proven, unless an employer's partner programme suddenly needs the badge, at which point the calculus flips and the employer should pay.

How to protect the ROI if you do certify

Most wasted certification money is not spent on the wrong exam — it is spent on unready attempts and forgotten renewals. Three habits protect the investment:

Do hiring managers actually check certifications?

Inconsistently — which is precisely why they work best at the screening gate. Some employers verify credentials through the issuer's public verification systems; many never look past the CV line. Assume verification happens (never list a lapsed cert as current) and assume interrogation happens too: a certification you cannot discuss fluently in an interview damages you more than its absence would.

Is an expired certification worth anything?

As a CV line, listed honestly with its dates, it still documents that you once passed the bar — reasonable evidence in a field where skills persist longer than badges. What it no longer does is pass automated filters that check currency, and with most modern DevOps credentials expiring in two years, "current" is doing more of the signalling work each year.

Does it matter which certification, or just that I have one?

It matters. A hands-on exam in a skill your target role uses daily is a different asset from a multiple-choice fundamentals badge in a stack the employer does not run. Worth it for: career-changers and early-career engineers who need to pass non-technical screens; engineers pivoting to a new stack; anyone targeting employers that filter or reward on credentials; anyone whose employer funds it (subsidised signal is nearly always worth taking — pick well and it costs you only time).

Skip it (for now) if: your experience already tells the story your target roles need; you are hired through network and referral; you cannot commit to the two-year renewal cycle; or you would be certifying to postpone the scarier work of building and showing real systems. A certification substitutes for missing evidence — it cannot substitute for missing skill, and it was never meant to.
