CompTIA Exam Objectives: How to Use Them

Turn the free CompTIA exam objectives PDF into a checklist, study map and readiness tracker — a practical method that works for A+, Network+ and Security+.

Every CompTIA exam ships with a free document that tells you, line by line, what the test can ask — and most candidates skim it once and never open it again. That document is the exam objectives PDF, downloadable at no cost from comptia.org for every live exam, and using it properly is the single cheapest upgrade you can make to your preparation. The exam is written against the objectives; your study plan should be too.

This guide shows you how to read the document's structure and convert it into a working checklist and study map. What the objectives document actually contains

Open any CompTIA objectives PDF and you will find the same anatomy:

  • Exam metadata up front — the exam code and version, number of questions ("maximum of"), time limit, passing score, and recommended experience. Always confirm you have the objectives for the current exam code (for example SY0-701 for Security+ as of August 2026); a previous version's PDF will quietly mis-aim weeks of study.
  • Domains with percentage weightings. Each exam is split into a handful of domains, each with a stated share of the exam. CySA+ CS0-004, for instance, weights Security Operations at 34% and Reporting & Communication at 16% — a two-to-one signal about where questions concentrate.
  • Numbered objectives within each domain, phrased with a verb: "Compare and contrast…", "Given a scenario, configure…", "Explain the importance of…".
  • Bulleted sub-topics under each objective — the actual testable vocabulary: protocols, tools, attack types, port numbers, commands.
  • An acronym list and proposed hardware/software appendix at the back, which most candidates never notice and which doubles as a ready-made flashcard list and home-lab shopping list.

Read the verbs before the topics

The verb that opens each objective tells you the depth the exam expects, and this is the most commonly missed signal in the whole document:

  • "Explain" / "Summarise" / "Identify" — recall and understanding. Reading, notes and flashcards are enough.
  • "Compare and contrast" — you must know the differences, not just definitions. Build comparison tables yourself; these lines breed the trickiest multiple-choice distractors.
  • "Given a scenario…" — application. These objectives are where performance-based questions (PBQs) and scenario items come from, and they demand hands-on practice: a lab, a simulator, a command line. If you only read about a "given a scenario" objective, expect it to hurt on exam day.

Sorting every objective into those three buckets before you start studying tells you, in about twenty minutes, how much of your preparation must be hands-on rather than book-based.

Convert the PDF into a checklist: a five-step method

  1. Get the current PDF from comptia.org. Objectives for every exam are free to download from the certification's official page (a short form may be required). Verify the exam code on the cover against the exam you have booked or plan to book.
  2. Extract every bottom-level line into a spreadsheet. One row per bullet, with columns for domain, objective number, the line itself, and the verb bucket (explain / compare / scenario). Copy-paste from the PDF and tidy; for a 90-question exam's objectives this is an evening's work that repays itself for weeks.
  3. Add a confidence column and rate every row 0–2 before you study anything: 0 = never heard of it, 1 = recognise it but could not explain it, 2 = could teach it. This honest first pass is your personal gap map, and it stops you re-studying comfortable material.
  4. Schedule by weighting × weakness. Multiply domain weight by your average gap in that domain and study in descending order. A heavily weighted domain full of 0s comes first; a light domain you already know comes last. This is how the objectives replace generic advice like "start with chapter one".
  5. Re-rate as you go, and log evidence. A row only moves to 2 when you have done something to prove it — explained it aloud, done it in a lab, or answered practice questions on it correctly. The checklist is finished when nothing sits at 0 and the "given a scenario" rows all have hands-on evidence behind them.

Use the objectives as your source-of-truth filter

The second job of the objectives, after planning, is scoping. Study resources drift: books include legacy material, video courses pad, forum wisdom ages badly. Whenever a resource covers something, ask which objective row it maps to. No row, no study time — and conversely, any row your chosen resource never touches needs a second resource to fill it. When an exam version changes (CompTIA revises each exam every few years and retires the old code), rebuilding the spreadsheet from the new PDF shows you precisely what changed, rather than guessing from a book's edition number.

The same mapping works in reverse for practice questions: when you miss a question, trace it back to its objective row and mark that row down. Over a few sessions this turns a raw score into a per-domain diagnosis. Worked example: one Security+ objective, unpacked

Take a Security Operations-style objective phrased "Given a scenario, analyse indicators of malicious activity", with bullets listing attack types. Applied to the method:

  • Verb bucket: scenario → hands-on. Reading definitions is not enough; you need to look at logs or simulated alerts and pick the attack out.
  • Checklist rows: each bulleted attack type becomes its own row — you might rate "phishing" a 2 and "DDoS amplification" a 0 on day one.
  • Study action: for the 0-rated rows, find or build one concrete example each, then answer practice questions until you can recognise the indicator pattern, not the memorised name.

If your paragraph of notes on an objective would read the same with a different attack name substituted in, you have memorised vocabulary, not met the objective. That test — could I handle the scenario version of this line? — is the everyday use of the document.

Where the objectives stop being enough

The objectives tell you what can be tested, never how well you currently perform under exam conditions and never which resources to use.
