How to Prepare for CompTIA Network+

A hands-on Network+ study method — lab practice, a repeatable subnetting drill, port memorisation tactics and practice-test benchmarking for N10-009.

The best way to prepare for CompTIA Network+ is to treat it as a skill to practise, not a syllabus to read. Networking concepts only stick when you configure, calculate and troubleshoot them yourself, so an effective plan braids three strands together from week one: concept study against the official objectives, a small lab you actually use, and daily drills for the mechanical skills — subnetting above all — that the exam rewards. This guide sets out that method for the current N10-009 exam, including a repeatable subnetting routine and a way to use practice tests as a readiness gauge rather than a comfort blanket.

What are you actually preparing for?

CompTIA Network+ is the vendor-neutral networking certification from CompTIA, aimed at people moving into network support and administration. The current exam version as of 2026 is N10-009, launched in June 2024 after N10-008 retired in December 2024 — check that every resource you buy is written for N10-009. The exam runs to a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, combining multiple-choice with performance-based questions, and the passing score is 720 on a scale of 100–900 (a scaled score, not a percentage). It is delivered through Pearson VUE, at a test centre or online-proctored.

There are no formal prerequisites. CompTIA recommends A+ plus nine to twelve months in a junior network administration or support role, which tells you the pitch: the questions assume you have plugged things in, read logs and chased faults, not just read about them. As listed by CompTIA's authorised resellers in June 2026, the US retail fee is $399, varying by country — confirm the current figure on CompTIA's site.

How should you structure your study plan?

Run three strands in parallel rather than in sequence. Reading all the theory first and "saving the lab for later" is the most common structural mistake in Network+ prep, because the lab is where the theory becomes memorable.

  1. Concept strand. One primary course or study guide, worked through in objective order. After each topic, close the book and explain the concept aloud or in a notebook — what problem does VLAN segmentation solve? why does traceroute show what it shows? If you cannot explain it, you have not finished the topic.
  2. Lab strand. Two or three sessions a week where you build or break something related to what you just studied (details in the next section).
  3. Drill strand. Short, frequent repetitions for the memorisation-heavy material: subnetting calculations, port numbers, protocol behaviours, cable and connector types. Ten to fifteen minutes daily beats a two-hour cram, because these skills decay fast and the exam expects them at reflex speed.

Track everything against the objectives document. A topic is done when you have studied it, done something with it, and answered questions on it — three ticks, not one.

How do you get hands-on practice without a rack of equipment?

You do not need enterprise hardware. A workable Network+ lab costs little or nothing:

  • A network simulator or emulator. Free simulation tools let you drag routers and switches onto a canvas, cable them, assign addresses and watch packets move. Build the classic topologies as you meet them: two subnets behind a router, a small switched LAN with VLANs, a simple routed path you can traceroute across.
  • Your own home network. Log in to your router. Find the DHCP lease table, change the DNS server, port-forward a service, split the Wi-Fi bands. Every screen in that interface maps to an exam objective.
  • Command-line tools you already have. ping, traceroute/tracert, ipconfig/ifconfig, nslookup, netstat, arp. For each one, learn what it shows, what "healthy" output looks like, and what specific failures look like — the exam's troubleshooting scenarios are built on exactly that pattern recognition.
  • Two devices and a cable or a virtual machine or two. Statically address them, break the subnet mask on purpose, and watch communication fail. Deliberately induced faults are the fastest way to internalise troubleshooting logic.

The habit that matters: never let a concept stay theoretical for more than a few days. Studied DNS on Tuesday? Query records with nslookup on Wednesday.

How do you learn subnetting for Network+?

Subnetting is the single most-drilled skill in Network+ preparation because it is pure procedure: once the method is automatic, every question is the same question. Learn it in this order, and do not advance a stage until the current one is comfortable.

  1. Understand the binary foundation once. Work through why 255.255.255.0 is /24 by writing out the octets in binary. You will not convert binary in the exam room, but the method makes no sense without seeing it once.
  2. Memorise the anchor rows. The mask values (128, 192, 224, 240, 248, 252, 254, 255) and their prefix equivalents, plus powers of two up to 4,096. This is flashcard material for your daily drill strand.
  3. Practise the standard questions as a fixed procedure. Given an address and prefix, find: network address, broadcast address, first and last usable host, number of usable hosts. Write the same worksheet layout every time until the steps are mechanical.
  4. Reverse the questions. "How many subnets of at least 30 hosts fit in this block?" and "which subnet does this host belong to?" — the exam loves the inverted forms.
  5. Drill for speed under time. Five mixed problems, timed, every study day. When you can clear them quickly without hesitation, subnetting stops being a risk and starts being banked marks.

Expect this to feel slow for the first week or two and then click. That click is the point of daily repetition.

What about ports, protocols and the rest of the memory work?

Beyond subnetting, Network+ carries a genuine memorisation load: well-known port numbers, protocol pairs (and which rides on TCP, UDP or both), wireless standards, connector and fibre types, routing protocol characteristics. Handle it with spaced repetition — physical cards or a flashcard app — seeded gradually as you meet each topic in the concept strand, not dumped in as a final-fortnight panic.

Two tactics make the memory work stick better:

  • Attach every fact to a behaviour. "Port 53, DNS" is fragile; "my nslookup query went to port 53" is durable, because you watched it happen in the lab strand.
  • Group by scenario, not by list order. Learn the secure/insecure protocol pairs together, the email protocols together, the remote-access options together. Exam questions are framed as scenarios ("a technician needs encrypted remote CLI access…"), so store the facts the way they will be asked.

How should you use practice tests to benchmark readiness?

Practice questions do two different jobs at two different times, and mixing them up is how people arrive at exam day with a false sense of security.

During study: diagnosis. After each domain, take a short untimed quiz on that domain only. Review every question — including the ones you got right by luck — and map each miss back to a specific objective line. That objective goes back into your study queue. Your goal at this stage is to find weaknesses cheaply, so a low score is useful information, not a setback.

Before booking: simulation. Once the objectives list is fully ticked, switch to full-length, timed tests taken in one sitting under quiet, closed-book conditions, including working the performance-based-style questions properly rather than skipping them. Now you are measuring three things: coverage across all domains, pacing across 90 questions in 90 minutes, and stamina. Consistent comfortable passes across different full-length sets — not one lucky run, and not repeats of a set you have seen — are your green light to book. If one domain keeps dragging, return to diagnosis mode for that domain before simulating again.

One warning: if you start recognising questions and recalling answer letters rather than reasoning, that set is no longer measuring anything. Rotate question pools and always be able to say why the right answer is right.

A readiness checklist before you book

Run through this honestly. Booking with two or more "no" answers usually means paying twice — CompTIA's retake policy lets you resit immediately once, then imposes a 14-day wait from the third attempt, at full price each time unless you bought a retake bundle.

  • Every N10-009 objective line has been studied, practised and tested — no "I'll wing that one" topics.
  • You can clear a set of mixed subnetting problems quickly and without notes.
  • Port/protocol flashcards are at near-perfect recall on spaced review.
  • You can narrate a structured troubleshooting approach for a scenario ("user cannot reach the internet") from symptom to resolution.
  • You have passed multiple different full-length timed practice tests with room to spare, finishing inside 90 minutes.
  • You have used every command-line tool on the objectives at least once on a real machine.

Booking the exam with confidence

When the checklist is green, book promptly — readiness decays, and an exam date focuses the final fortnight. Choose test centre or online proctoring based on your environment (online requires a quiet, private room and a stable connection), keep the daily subnetting and flashcard drills running right up to exam week, and spend the last few days on light review of your weakest domain plus one final timed simulation, not on new material.
