The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and the Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) are both senior-level ISC2 credentials, but they answer different career questions. CISSP certifies broad, management-oriented command of the whole security discipline across eight domains. CCSP certifies deep, technical-and-governance expertise in securing cloud environments across six cloud-specific domains. If your work — or your ambition — spans security programmes end to end, CISSP is the natural pick. If your work is concentrating in cloud architecture, cloud data protection or cloud compliance, CCSP is the sharper signal. And because an active CISSP satisfies the entire CCSP experience requirement, many professionals treat CISSP as the foundation and CCSP as the specialisation layered on top.
This article settles the generalist-versus-specialist choice: what separates the two credentials, what each demands of you, and a framework for deciding which to sit first. For the full anatomy of either exam — domain-by-domain detail, registration process, endorsement — see the dedicated CISSP certification guide and CCSP certification guide.
CISSP is ISC2's flagship generalist credential. Its 2024 exam outline covers eight domains: Security and Risk Management, Asset Security, Security Architecture and Engineering, Communication and Network Security, Identity and Access Management (IAM), Security Assessment and Testing, Security Operations, and Software Development Security. The breadth is the point — CISSP holders are expected to design, run and govern a security programme, not merely operate one part of it. The exam refresh effective 15 April 2024 nudged the weightings (Security and Risk Management rose from 15% to 16%; Software Development Security fell from 11% to 10%) but kept the same eight-domain structure.
CCSP narrows the lens to cloud. Its six domains, as weighted on the outline listed effective 1 August 2026, are: Cloud Concepts, Architecture and Design (17%), Cloud Data Security (20%), Cloud Platform and Infrastructure Security (17%), Cloud Application Security (16%), Cloud Security Operations (17%), and Legal, Risk and Compliance (13%). Notice that the heaviest single domain is data security and the tail is legal and compliance — CCSP is not a hands-on AWS or Azure exam, it is a vendor-neutral test of how you architect, govern and operate security in cloud models, whichever provider runs them.
The practical difference shows up in the questions each credential prepares you to answer at work. A CISSP conversation sounds like "what should our organisation's risk treatment and access governance look like?" A CCSP conversation sounds like "who is responsible for encrypting this data under a shared-responsibility model, and which jurisdiction's law applies to it?"

There is no official answer: ISC2 publishes no pass rates for either exam, so any percentage you see quoted is invented. What can be said with confidence is that they are hard in different ways.
CISSP's difficulty is breadth and judgement. Eight domains mean nobody sits the exam working daily in all of them, and the questions famously reward thinking like a risk-owner rather than a technician — the "best" answer among several defensible ones. CCSP's difficulty is depth and precision: five years of general security seniority won't carry you through cloud data lifecycle questions or cross-border compliance scenarios if you haven't worked with them.
Both exams now use the same Computerised Adaptive Testing engine — 100 to 150 questions, a three-hour ceiling, and no going back to change an answer once you've moved on. That format punishes hesitation and second-guessing equally on both.
We unpack each exam's difficulty properly in how hard the CISSP exam really is and how hard the CCSP exam is.
Eligibility is where the two credentials interlock, and it materially affects sequencing.
CISSP requires five years of cumulative, full-time paid work experience in two or more of its eight domains. A relevant degree or an approved credential (ISC2's list includes CompTIA Security+, CCSP itself, CISM and others) can waive one year — but only one waiver applies, ever. Part-time work and documented internships can count towards the total. If you lack the experience, you can still sit the exam and become an Associate of ISC2, with six years to accumulate the five.
CCSP requires five years of cumulative full-time IT experience, of which three must be in information security and one in at least one of the six CCSP domains. Cloud Security Alliance's CCSK can substitute for one year, or a relevant degree can waive one year — again, one waiver only.
Here is the asymmetry that shapes most people's decision: an active CISSP satisfies the entire CCSP experience requirement. Hold CISSP and the CCSP eligibility question simply disappears — you register, sit the exam, and complete endorsement. The reverse is not true: CCSP counts only as a standard one-year waiver credential against CISSP's five years. Structurally, ISC2 has built a one-way bridge from the generalist credential into the cloud specialisation.
That waiver is why "should I do CCSP after CISSP?" is such a common question — and the honest answer depends on how much cloud overlap your CISSP already gave you, which is exactly the analysis in CCSP vs CISSP: do you need both?.
Tread carefully here, because most salary comparisons you'll find online are unsourced. What the verifiable data shows: Skillsoft's 2025 Top-Paying IT Certifications research (US figures) put the CCSP at an average of $171,524 — evidence that cloud security specialisation commands serious pay in the current market. Widely circulated figures place CISSP in a similar bracket, but the primary Skillsoft page for that number could not be independently confirmed, so treat CISSP salary claims as directional and check current surveys yourself.
Two caveats matter more than any single average. First, pay varies enormously by country, city, sector, seniority and role — a UK compliance analyst and a US cloud architect with the same certificate will not earn the same. Second, at this level the certification is rarely the thing setting your salary; it is the role it qualifies you to hold. Demand context favours both credentials: ISC2's 2024 Cybersecurity Workforce Study reported a global workforce gap of more than 4.7 million people. For the deeper CISSP earnings picture by role and region, see the CISSP salary guide.
Neither certification is universally "better". Work through these five questions and the right order usually reveals itself.
The security manager with patchy cloud exposure. Eight years in — SOC lead, then security manager — with governance, IAM and operations experience but only project-level cloud work. CISSP first: the eligibility is already met, the domains mirror the day job, and it strengthens the management trajectory. CCSP can follow later via the waiver once cloud work deepens.
The cloud engineer moving into security. Six years in IT, the last three securing Azure and AWS workloads — encryption design, landing-zone controls, compliance evidence. This candidate meets CCSP's requirement directly and the exam content is their daily work. CISSP can wait until the career turns towards programme leadership.
The consultant who bills across both worlds. A security consultant advising clients on strategy and cloud transformation gets asked for CISSP by procurement checklists and for cloud credibility by delivery teams. CISSP first for the market signal and the CCSP waiver; CCSP within the following year or two while the momentum lasts.
Whichever you choose, the adaptive format changes how you should prepare: with no ability to revisit questions, unrehearsed time pressure and first-instinct accuracy matter as much as knowledge. Build in timed practice against the exam's question style, analyse which domains generate your errors, and target the weak ones rather than re-reading what you already know. ExamPractice offers free sample questions with fuller sets and a timed simulation mode for subscribers on both the CISSP practice questions page and the CCSP practice questions page — a full-length timed run is the honest way to benchmark readiness before you book.
Choose CISSP if your evidence base is broad security experience, your direction is leadership, or you intend to hold both credentials eventually — the full CCSP experience waiver makes it the efficient first move. Choose CCSP if cloud security is your actual job or imminent job, your experience already satisfies its more specific requirement, and a generalist management credential wouldn't change what you're hired to do. Choose neither yet if you're early-career: both are five-years-experience credentials, and ISC2's ladder has lower rungs — start with the ISC2 exam overview hub or our map of the whole portfolio to find the right entry point.
The choice isn't really CISSP versus CCSP for most people — it's which one first, and how soon the other follows.
