CCSP vs CISSP: Do You Need Both?

How much does CCSP actually add once you hold CISSP? An overlap analysis of ISC2's two flagship certifications, who benefits from both, and in which order.

Here is a fact that quietly answers half of this question: ISC2 itself treats an active CISSP as full satisfaction of the CCSP's entire five-year experience requirement. No other credential gets that treatment. The organisation that runs both exams has, in effect, declared CISSP the senior, broader credential — and positioned CCSP as a specialisation that CISSP holders can bolt on without re-proving their experience.

Short answer: you do not need both. CISSP alone is enough for most senior security careers, and CCSP alone is enough for many cloud-focused ones. Both together makes sense in one specific situation: you already hold CISSP (or clearly qualify for it), your work is substantially cloud-centred, and you want a credential that says so explicitly. If that describes you, adding CCSP is one of the cheaper, faster upgrades available to a certified professional — precisely because of how much the two overlap.

What follows is an overlap analysis rather than a beauty contest: how much new ground CCSP actually covers once you know the CISSP material, who genuinely benefits from holding both, in what order to take them, and when to stop at one.

What each certification claims about you

Both credentials come from ISC2, both certify experienced professionals, both renew on three-year cycles, and both carry the same $135 USD annual maintenance fee. The difference is the shape of the claim they make.

The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) is the breadth credential. Its eight domains — Security and Risk Management, Asset Security, Security Architecture and Engineering, Communication and Network Security, Identity and Access Management, Security Assessment and Testing, Security Operations, and Software Development Security — span essentially the whole discipline. Employers read CISSP as "this person can be trusted with security responsibility across an organisation", which is why it appears in job adverts for managers, architects and consultants alike.

The Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP) is the depth credential. Its six domains take one slice of the security landscape — cloud — and drill into it: Cloud Concepts, Architecture and Design (17%), Cloud Data Security (20%), Cloud Platform and Infrastructure Security (17%), Cloud Application Security (16%), Cloud Security Operations (17%), and Legal, Risk and Compliance (13%), per the outline listed effective August 2026. Employers read CCSP as "this person understands how security actually changes when infrastructure belongs to a hyperscaler".

How much do the two exams actually overlap?

More than the separate domain lists suggest. Map CCSP's six domains onto CISSP's eight and the shared conceptual ground is obvious:

  • Governance, risk and compliance. CISSP Domain 1 (Security and Risk Management, weighted 16% since the 2024 refresh) and CCSP's Legal, Risk and Compliance domain work the same muscles — risk treatment, legal frameworks, privacy obligations. CCSP adds cloud-specific twists: data residency across jurisdictions, contractual risk with providers, audit rights you no longer automatically have.
  • Architecture and engineering. CISSP Domain 3 teaches security models, cryptography and design principles in general; CCSP's architecture and platform domains re-apply them to virtualisation, shared infrastructure and provider-managed services.
  • Identity and access management. A full CISSP domain; woven through CCSP's platform and application domains, with federation and cloud IAM patterns foregrounded.
  • Operations. CISSP Domain 7 and CCSP's Cloud Security Operations domain overlap heavily on monitoring, incident response and business continuity — CCSP reframes them for environments you operate but do not physically control.
  • Application security. CISSP Domain 8 (Software Development Security) maps to CCSP's Cloud Application Security domain, which narrows onto cloud development pipelines and service models.

What is genuinely new in CCSP for a CISSP holder concentrates in two places: the cloud-specific data security lifecycle (its heaviest domain at 20%) and the architectural realities of shared responsibility — what the provider secures, what you secure, and how to design and contract around that boundary. Experienced estimates vary by person, but the structural picture is clear: a CISSP holder starts CCSP preparation with a substantial head start on concepts and vocabulary, and the real study effort goes into cloud-native specifics.

That overlap is exactly why "do I need both?" is a fair question. You are not buying two disjoint bodies of knowledge; you are buying one broad credential plus a deep extension of part of it.

The requirements picture: one door opens the other

The two certifications gate entry differently, and the asymmetry matters for sequencing.

CISSP requires five years of cumulative, full-time paid experience across at least two of its eight domains. One year (at most) can be waived with a relevant degree or an approved credential, and candidates without the experience can pass the exam as an Associate of ISC2 with six years to earn it. CCSP requires five years of cumulative IT experience, including three in information security and one in a CCSP domain — unless you hold an active CISSP, which satisfies the whole thing. The reverse is not true: CCSP only waives one year of CISSP's requirement, the same as Security+ or a degree would.

Both credentials share the rest of ISC2's machinery: pass at a Pearson VUE centre, get endorsed by an ISC2 member in good standing within nine months, maintain CPE credits on a three-year cycle (120 for CISSP, 90 for CCSP), and pay the annual maintenance fee.

Note that both exams now use Computerised Adaptive Testing — 100 to 150 questions in a maximum of three hours, with no ability to return to earlier answers. If you sat CISSP before April 2024 and remember a longer linear-style ordeal, the CCSP experience will feel different from what you recall: shorter, adaptive, and unforgiving of guess-and-revise habits.

Which order: CCSP or CISSP first?

For most people who intend to hold both, CISSP first is the cleaner sequence, for three practical reasons:

  1. The experience waiver only flows one way. CISSP unlocks CCSP's entire eligibility requirement; CCSP merely shaves a year off CISSP's. Doing CISSP first means your second exam has zero eligibility friction.
  2. Breadth before depth mirrors how the exams are written. CCSP assumes general security fluency and tests its cloud application. Arriving with CISSP-level grounding means your CCSP preparation is mostly the genuinely new cloud material, not fundamentals.
  3. One endorsement relationship, established early. Both certifications require endorsement within nine months of passing; once you are an ISC2 member via CISSP, you are inside the ecosystem — and ISC2's member policy structure means your annual fee covers your membership rather than multiplying per credential (confirm current fee policy on ISC2's site).

The exception: if your five years of experience are heavily cloud-shaped and thin on two-plus CISSP domains, or your target roles are purely hands-on cloud engineering with no leadership ambitions, CCSP first — or CCSP only — is entirely defensible. You qualify for it directly, and it speaks to the jobs you actually want.

On relative difficulty, treat forum folklore sceptically. ISC2 publishes no pass rates for either exam, so claims that one is statistically harder are unverifiable. What can be said: CISSP is harder to walk into because its breadth means more domains where you might be weak; CCSP is harder for candidates whose cloud experience is shallow, because its questions live in the details of environments you are assumed to have worked in. Who genuinely benefits from holding both

Two credentials cost two exam fees ($749 + $599 in the Americas as of 2026, and retakes are full price), ongoing CPE obligations, and months of study. The combination pays for itself in specific situations:

The cloud security architect or lead. You design cloud security programmes and need to be credible to two audiences at once — engineers who respect depth and executives who recognise CISSP. This is the archetypal both-certs profile. A realistic case: a security engineer with seven years' experience, the last three on a major cloud platform, holds CISSP and keeps being pulled into cloud architecture reviews. Adding CCSP costs one exam and a focused study cycle (the experience requirement is already satisfied), and moves their CV from "senior generalist who knows cloud" to "certified cloud security specialist with senior breadth".

The consultant or contractor. Client procurement filters often screen on named certifications. Holding both means passing both the "senior security professional" filter and the "cloud specialist" filter, widening the engagements you qualify for.

The professional in a cloud-first migration. If your employer is moving substantially to cloud and you hold CISSP, CCSP is the natural way to re-anchor your credential set to where the work is going — and to signal that internally before roles get redefined around you.

Regulated and government-adjacent environments. Organisations that formally map roles to certifications may recognise both credentials in different role slots, making the pair more valuable than either alone.

Who should stop at one

  • Stop at CISSP if your trajectory is management, GRC leadership, or broad architecture where cloud is one concern among many. CISSP already covers cloud concepts at the breadth level; a second exam adds specialisation you may never trade on. Consider a CISSP concentration such as ISSMP if you want a leadership-flavoured add-on instead.
  • Stop at CCSP if you are a hands-on cloud specialist with no appetite for the breadth credential — CCSP alone is a respected, senior qualification, and nothing about it expires into second-class status for lacking CISSP.

Does holding CISSP make the CCSP exam easier?

It removes the eligibility hurdle entirely and covers much of the conceptual ground, but the exam itself is unchanged. Cloud-specific material — the data lifecycle, shared responsibility, provider ecosystems — still needs dedicated study, especially if your hands-on cloud time is limited.

Do I pay two annual maintenance fees if I hold both?

Fill in the blank honestly: "In three years I want to be ___." If the sentence ends with a role where cloud security is the job title or its core — architect, cloud security lead, cloud consultant — the CISSP-then-CCSP pairing is worth its cost, and if you already hold CISSP the marginal effort is modest. If the sentence ends anywhere else, one credential is enough; pick the one whose claim matches the sentence, and put the second exam fee towards experience that does.
